Nov 3, 2001 Liston Altman FLORENCE -- Liston Altman, 72, Sgt. Maj., U.S. Army (Ret) of 3714 Pine Haven Drive, Florence, died early Friday morning, Nov. 2, 2001, in a Florence health care facility, after an illness. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Monday at the Florence National Cemetery with full military rites provided by the U.S. Army Honors Detail. The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Sunday at Stoudenmire-Dowling Funeral Home. He was born in Marion County a son of the late Curtis McSwain and Willa Carter Altman. He had retired after 26 years as a Sergeant Major in the U.S. Army having been a veteran of the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam War. During the Vietnam War he was twice a recipient of the Bronze Star. His first was awarded during a 1966-67 tour and his second with the Oak Leaf Cluster was awarded during a 1970-71 tour. He was a life member of the V.F.W. Post #3181 and a member of the M.O.C. After retiring from the Army, he served as Assistant Chef of Public Safety for Francis Marion University. He was also a retired farmer. He attended St. Anthony's Catholic Church. Surviving are his wife, Sabine D. Jonas Altman of Florence; a brother, Maxie C. Altman of Arlington, Va.; two sisters, Onnie Boatwright of Arlington, Va. and Azilee (Carlisle) Williamson of Florence; and a number of nieces and nephews. Memorials may be made to a charity of one's choice.
