>If there is any more information out there about Asa McKenzie I would love >to know. In the estate settlement of James Hays from the western side of the old county, there is mention of Agnes, daughter of James, who was married to Asa McKenzie. My guess is that Agnes would have been born between 1795 and 1810, making her a generation later than the Asa listed below, if I understand correctly that Dilla was born in the 1770's and imagine that her brother was about her age. I realize that the Asa listed could in theory have had a son or nephew named after him. I have tried to find Asa and Agnes, but without succcess. There is an Asa McKenzie listed in the 1860 census of Houston County, Texas, from South Carolina and as age 63, which would put him about the right time frame, but the wife listed is Jane (age 52 born in Tennessee). I don't know if the census taker could have recorded the state wrong and this was really Agnes Jane or if this is the wrong Asa or if Agnes had died and Asa remarried. In any case, it looks like Asa of Texas had been in Arkansas, where sons Alexander and Asa were born in 1838 and 1842, respectively. He was paying taxes in Benton County, Arkansas in 1839. Since Asa of Texas was from SC and the name is not so common, it could be that he is part of this McKenzie family I thought I'd throw in my two cents worth. Of course, I would love to know more. Good luck! Larry Jones From Phil Price: I have outlined the McKenzie family tree from what W. W. Sellers wrote in his >book "A History of Marion County South Carolina" from pages 236,237,238. >Sellers doesn't give a lot of dates and may have left out a lot of other >McKenzie's he didn't know.
