    1. [SCMARION-L] HAYES / PRICE Connection
    2. Trying to help fill in those Price family blanks... Another Hayes/Price connection: Ithamer Hayes (1811-1884) of Hayestown, between Lake View and Dillon, was married first to Mary Jane Price, according to the death certificate of one of his sons. Ithamer's second wife was Ann Brewer, and his third wife and widow was Ava Jane Brewer, sister of Ann, and fondly remembered in the community as "Granny Avy Jane." Both Ann and Ava Jane were daughters of my ancestor, Asa Brewer and his wife, Elizabeth Hayes. (Please note that this Elizabeth Hayes' parents are unknown, but she was NOT the daughter of Benjamin Hayes.) >From Death Certificate of Turrentine Hayes: born about 1840, died 29 April 1924 in Dillon County Father: Ithamer Hays Mother: Mary Jane Price Informant: Frank Hayes The informant, Frank Hayes, was a half brother of Turrentine Hayes. Frank was a son of Ithamer and his third wife, Ava Jane Brewer. I know from interviews with descendants of Frank that he spoke often of his family relations, and was quite knowledgable about them. There is no reason to question Frank's knowledge of the name of his father's first wife - his brother's mother. I have no further information on Mary Jane Price. She apparently died between about 1840 when Turrentine "Uncle Tine" was born, and 1850, when the census shows Ithamer married to his 2nd wife, Ann Brewer, mother of Joel B. Hayes who was born in 1851. It's likely that some of the children born between 1840-1850 were Mary Jane's, and some were Ann's, but impossible to determine where the "cut-off" line was. Children of Ithamer Hayes: Children by 1st wife Mary Jane Price: 1) Celia Emma/Emily Hayes born c1838 2) Morgan C. Turrentine "Uncle Tine" Hayes (c1840-1924) never wed Children by either 1st or 2nd wife: 3) Jeanette/Jane Ann Hayes b c1841 4) Virginia Ann Hayes b c1843 5) Nancy Ann Hayes b c1844, mar Theophilus Huggins, son of Henry Huggins & unk Elvington 6) Ithamer J. Information on others based on census; extensive interviews with descendants, especially Vida Caroline Cook, granddaughter of Joel B. Hayes; and Dora Bullock Bryant, granddaughter of Frank Hayes. Dora personally remembered Uncle Tine and Granny Ava Jane - in fact Dora identified a photograph of Ava Jane Brewer Hayes for me; tombstones; Bible records; death certificates; Marion Co deeds; a typewritten manuscript by the late SC Senator Roger Scott about "Uncle Tine and Granny Ava Jane." Have many more details on this family (but not on Mary Jane Price) if anyone is interested.] If I had to guess, I would suppose that Mary Jane Price Hayes was connected to the Enos Price who is mentioned in deeds among the Hayestown Hayes families. I have no idea who Enos Price might have been. Family members have said that all three of Ithamer Hayes' wives lie beside him at Hayestown Cemetery, but only Ithamer has a stone. His home was on the little dirt road that ran beside the cemetery, several hundred yards behind the cemetery. I've been told that Dr. Temple purchased this place after Frank Hayes died - he told someone he wanted it just because he was enamored of the building, it having been built with no nails, just pegs and dovetails. It served for awhile as a tenant house, but has long since fallen down, only the chimney remaining. Jo
