COLUMBIA Edna Lewis Edna Earle Best Lewis, formerly of Florence, died Friday, Oct. 12, 2001, in Columbia after a long illness. She was a daughter of Jamie M. and Laura Wingard Best of Galivants Ferry. She was the oldest of nine children. She was predeceased by her husband of 55 years, Andrew Lee Lewis, who died in June 2001. She was a 1940 graduate of Columbia College, where she received a bachelor's of science degree in home economics. She taught school for almost 40 years, mostly in Florence School District 1. She taught thousands of young women the art and science of homemaking, including nutrition, cooking, sewing and family care. She taught at McClenaghan High School, Southside High School and West Florence High School. She retired from teaching in 1978. Upon retirement, she and her husband became volunteers at McLeod Regional Medical Center, built a log house in the mountains and traveled extensively, including a trip to the Alaska Highway in a motor home. She was a devoted wife, mother, sister, grandmother and friend. Survivors include two daughters, Deborah Lewis and her husband, Chuck Niemeyer, of Augusta, Ga., and Dianne Berry and her husband, Stephen, of Columbia; a grandson, Taylor Berry of Columbia; three brothers, Fred G. Best of McClellanville, Jamie M. Best of Galivants Ferry and Pressley D. Best of Galivants Ferry; and three sisters, Miriam Altman of Summerville, Hattie Polk of Waynesville, N.C., and Barbara Shelley of Greenwood. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. tonight at Waters-Powell Funeral Home in Florence. The funeral will be at 3 p.m. Sunday at Sandy Plain United Methodist Church in Galivants Ferry.
