GALIVANTS FERRY | Mr. James ''J.L.'' Powers, 83, of Planters Circle passed away Sunday, March 12, 2009 at his residence surrounded by his family. Mr. Powers was born January 06, 1926 in Horry County, a son of the late James M. and Maud Viola Squires Powers. He was a faithful member and musician of Gethsemane Freewill Baptist Pentecostal Church. He was an avid sportsman. Mr. Powers was predeceased by one brother, Raleigh Lee Powers; and one granddaughter, Rhonda Suggs. Surviving are his wife of 31 years, Violet Richburg Powers of the home; one son, Johnny James Powers and Beth, of Marion; four stepchildren, Kathryn Black and her husband, Scott, of Johns Island; Julius O. Barfield and his wife, Betty, of North Charleston; James Barfield and his wife, Betty, of Ladson; and Barbara Hutson and her husband, Rocky, of Johns Island. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 15, 2009 in Johnson Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Norris Powell officiating. Burial will follow in Gethsemane Freewill Baptist Pentecostal Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Tuesday, April 14, 2009 at the funeral home.
