    2. MYRTLE BEACH | Mr. Lacy Cornelius Willoughby, 87, passed away Saturday, December 27, 2008, at Waccamaw Community Hospital. Mr. Willoughby was born April 14, 1921 in Horry County, South Carolina, the son of the late Clephus and Belle Graham Willoughby. He was preceded in death by his brother, J.C. Willoughby; and his sister, Lumay Willoughby. A veteran of World War II, Lacy served in the U.S. Army Air Corps, 354th Bomber Squadron. He was wounded in combat over Germany and is a Purple Heart recipient. After the war, he returned home to the Pleasant View community of Horry County and grew tobacco, corn, and cotton on the family farm. In 1957 he moved to Myrtle Beach and began his career in the motel business, first purchasing Green's Court, and in later years building Beachcomber Motor Inn and purchasing Beach Dunes. Lacy retired at age 50, and together with his wife enjoyed traveling and pursuing his hobby of fishing. He was always eager to share his freshwater catch with family and friends. He was also and avid reader who enjoyed a wide variety of periodicals and books. A long-time member of the First Baptist Church in Myrtle Beach, he practiced and taught his children to be fair and honest in business as well as in life, and to never take advantage of any person. Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Billie T. Willoughby; his son, Harry G. Willoughby and wife, Bre, of Myrtle Beach; his daughter, Carol W. Bair and husband, Robert, of Myrtle Beach; his two sisters, Lois W. Hucks of Conway and Vera W. Phipps of Mullins; four grandchildren, Shannon Miller, Ashley Phillips, Kimberly Land, and Wyatt Willoughby; and three great-grandchildren, Breland, Bella, and John Land. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, December 30, 2008, at McMillan-Small Funeral Home with the Rev. Larry Cashatt officiating. Burial will follow in the Ocean Woods Memorial Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5 until 7 p.m. Monday, December 29, 2008 at McMillan-Small Funeral Home.
