CONWAY | Mrs. Ophelia Buck Lee, 91, made the transition to her heavenly home November 19, 2008. Mrs. Lee was born September 5, 1917 the fourth child of Fred W. Buck and Sarah Williams Buck. Born in the Toddville section of Horry County, her early education was obtained in the Popular community. She attended and graduated from Whittemore High School, Conway, in 1937. Throughout the years Mrs. Lee was devoted to her family, God, church and Order of the Eastern Star. She was an active member of Bethel AME Church for over 70 years where she served in many capacities including Pulpit Aid Board secretary, and Senior Choir Treasurer. Mrs. Lee was also an active member of the Wisteria Garden Club for many years and took great pride in tending house plants and landscape gardening. One of her primary passions was her affiliation with Order of the Eastern Star. Over the years she had the distinction of serving as treasurer and grand associate deputy of District Six. On the local level she served as Worthy Matron of Silver Star Chapter 172 for 25 years. Left to cherish fond memories of Mrs. Lee are two sons, Dr. James E. (Patricia) Lee Sr. of Conway, and Don F. (Erma) Lee of Hyattsville, Md.; three sisters, Mrs. Mildred Vereen of Conway, Mrs. Lavern Livingston of North Myrtle Beach, and Mrs. Thomasina Ponder of New York, New York; one son-in-law, Louis H. Cooper of Mullins; two sisters-in-law, Lillie Mae Lee of Philadelphia, Pa., and Albertine Reid of Bronx, New York. The pride of her life was her seven grandchildren. Her eldest, Roger (Powanda) Cooper she partially raised as her own. Also left to mourn her passing are five great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren and a host of sorrowing relatives and friends. Over the years, she became the matriarch of the family and a surrogate mother figure for many of her beloved nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by two brothers; four sisters; one daughter, Daisy Cooper; and her beloved husband of 71 years, Richard A. Lee. Funeral Services will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, November 22, 2008 in Bethel AME Church, 1530 Racepath Avenue, Conway, S.C.
