Motte Legare Hay, 87, died peacefully at Roper Hospital on Saturday evening, January 3, 2009. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, January 6, 2009 at three o'clock at Johns Island Presbyterian Church. Interment, churchyard. Friends may call at J. HENRY STUHR, INC., DOWNTOWN CHAPEL, Monday from four until six o'clock. Motte was born April 30, 1921 in Charleston, SC. She was the daughter of Sarah Motte Legare Clement and Eugene Gordon Hay. She graduated from St. Johns High School and received a B.A. degree in history from Winthrop College in 1943. She taught in the St. Andrew's Elementary School district for 37 years, retiring from Stono Park Elementary School in 1980. She was a lifelong member of Johns Island Presbyterian Church. She is survived by her brother, Eugene Gordon Hay (Charlotte) of Charleston, SC; and three sisters, Mary Hay Jenkins of Johns Island, SC, Ann Hay Thomas of Mullins, SC and Lydia Hay Pedersen (Pete) of Johns Island, SC; and two sisters-in-law, Gertrude S. Hay and Rosa W. Hay. She was predeceased by her parents and two brothers, William Clement Hay and Daniel Ellis Hay, Jr. She is also survived by a large number of very close nieces and nephews including her brother's family with whom she lived for many years, E. Gordon Hay, Jr. (Genny) and their children, Genevieve, Gordon and Legare; Charlene Hay Bruce (Billy) and their children, Charlotte Miles, Rankin, Shalon and Macie; Motte Legare Hay Hackman (Tom); and Polly Hay Baird (Stan) and their children, Lora and Brock. Also, Marian Thomas Taylor (Alvin), Rhoda Thomas Sims (Beau), Daniel Legare Jenkins, Gordon Hay Jenkins (Janet), Robert Lebby Jenkins (Ruby), Jean Pedersen, Sally Pedersen Causey (Nick), Rose Ellis Hay Blessing (Dale), Lebby Hay McElmurray (Herndon), Anne Hay Marcengill (Sam), Kathryn Hay McDaniel (Randy), Daniel Ellis Hay, III (Michele), William C. Hay, Jr. (Gail), Trudy Hay Reeder (James), Patty Hay Holder (Kirk) and by many much loved great nieces and nephews.
