    1. [SCMARION-L] Still looking for Elisha Lewis
    2. Lisa Lasky
    3. I'm still trying to fill in the blanks on Elisha Lewis, son of William Lewis of Horry County. What I've been able to find to date is pretty limited. In his will, William Lewis left the following to his son Elisha Lewis: Eightly I Give & devise and Bequith unto my son Elisha Lewis one Negro Boy named Luke and one piece of land Lying on little Pee Dee in Marion District and state afore said Containing two hundred and twenty five acres Be the Same more or less lying Between the above land given to Joel Lewis and James Lewis line and one heifer to him and his heirs for ever I think this is the same land referred to in the land records as being purchased by William T. Lewis from Jonathan Lewis. It appears Elisha sold it to Jonathan, but I haven't found a record of the transaction. The last mention I have of Elisha in is 1916 when he witnessed the sale of property by James Lewis to Isaac Lewis. He seems to have disappeared into a black hole. He did have land, but whether it extended beyond the land sold to Jonathan Lewis, I'm not sure. I can't find any trace of a probate record. Francine sent me the following information from the Mary Lewis Stephenson book about Elisha: He is listed 4 times. First as a son of William and Morning Van Pelt Lewis. She did not know his birthdate. Second, she states that Sellers erred in omitting Elisha and Sally as children. Third, quoting from William Lewis' will as given in the book, "Eightly I Give & devise & Bequith unto my son Elisha Lewis one Negro Boy named Luke and one piece of land Lying on Little Pee Dee in Marion Distrect and state afore said Containing two hundred and twenty-five acres Be the Same more of lefs lying between the above land given to Joel Lewis and James Lewis line and one heifer to him & his heirs for ever --- " Lastly is her paragraph on " ELISHA LEWIS Elisha Lewis lost the sight of both eyes before reaching maturity and died unmarried. He signed a receipt Sept. 19, 1811, reading: 'Rec'd of the executors of William Lewis, dec'd, one negro boy named Luke and one three-year-old hiefer and two hundred and fifty acres of land.' " The SENCLewis.com website has the following information: Isaac James Lewis F 423 1817 200 acres $400 Sold 4/19/1816, witnessed by Elisha Lewis and Benjamin Lewis William T. Jonathan Lewis S 236 1843 220 acres $400 Originally owned by William Lewis, bequeathed to his son Elisha, then sold to Johathan Lewis The Georgia Passport records list an Elisha Lewis from Craven County as applying for a passport (along with a family from Marion County) for himself and his family. I am pretty sure this isn't the same Elisha. I'm hitting a complete brick wall here. He doesn't show up on census records after 1810, and the last mention is 1816. Most likely he died after witnessing the land transaction in 1816 and before the census was taken in 1820, but I'm not sure. As far as I can determine he didn't have any descendents but I'd like to be sure if possible. Does anyone have any more information on Elisha? Thanks for your help. --Lisa ============================================================ A few still left -- 16 x 20 prints of charcoal drawings done by the artist John Moll, commissioned in the late 1960's.
