    2. Dear List, Helen Lane Carmichael does such a great job doing the obits each day that I thought someone may be able to use these that I found in a file from 28 April 1991. REV. JAMES MERCHANT, WAS Methodist Minister Marion The Rev. James Adelbert Merchant, 70, died Saturday. Born in Cowpens, he was a son of Lautrelle Gatlin Merchant and the late Rev. James E. Merchant. A graduate of the University of SC, he received his master's of divinity degree from Emory Univ. and was a licensed preacher. He was received into the SC United Meth. Conf. in 1946 and had the following appointments: Grace-Bramlett, Hickory Grove, Blacksburg, Woodside-Berea of Greenville, St. Mark of Seneca, Main Street of Union, St. Paul of Orangeburg, Main Street of Greenwood, First Church of Lancaster, Anderson District Superintendent and First Church of Marion. He was secretary of the Board of Education from 1960 to 1963, secretary of World Service and Finance, trustee of the Methodist Home of Orangeburg, dean of the Pastors School, Committee on Interpretation and on the executive committee and president of Southeastern Jurisdiction Minister's Conference. S.C. Conference coordinator of continuing education, he was on the executive committee of Southeastern Jurisdiction District Superintendent Convocation, membership chair of Lancaster Mental Health Association, on the board of directors of Lancaster Rehabilitation Association and the board of Marion Mental Health Association. He was a member of Rotary International since 1949, serving as president of three clubs and on the board of directors of the rotary in Greenwood and Lancaster. He was president of the high school booster clubs in Dillon and Orangeburg. Surviving are his mother of Greenville; his wife, Ruth Jones Merchant; a son, Del Merchant of Myrtle Beach, and a daughter, Carol Ruth Merchant of Knoxville, Tenn. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at First United Methodist Church of Marion, with burial at 3:30 p.m. in Woodlawn Memorial Park of Greenville. The family will receive friends at the residence. Memorials may be made to the Methodist Home of Orangeburg or Greenwood Methodist Home. Richardson Funeral Home is in charge. RITES MARYLAND LANE, at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Bayboro Baptist Church. Goldfinch Funeral Home, Conway Chapel, is in charge. BLANCHE STEVENS TODD, at 4 p.m. at Goldfinch Funeral Home, Conway Chapel, with burial in Bethlehem Baptist Church cemetery OLLIE MAE LEIGH COLLINS, at 2 p.m. Monday at Goldfinsh Funeral Home, Conway Chapel burial in Sweetwater Branch Baptist Church cemetery.
