MULLINS — Mrs. Katherine Buffkin Turbeville, 85, died Monday, June 1, 2009 at Marion County Medical Center after an illness. She was born October 15, 1923 in Cerro Gordo, N.C., the fourth of four children born to Sommers and Georgia Buffkin. All of her siblings, Bill, Eddie and Annie, preceded her in death. Katherine grew up mostly around Fair Bluff, N.C., until she met Frontis Turbeville. They were married on January 22, 1953 and to this union two sons were born, Eddie Turbeville and Jimmy D. Turbeville. Eddie passed away at five days old. Jimmy resides in Mullins. Katherine loved to be around people. She was a nurse for 25 years. She worked at the old Martins Hospital in Mullins, then the old Palmetto Hospital in Marion and the old English Park Hospital in Marion. She loved flowers and loved to garden and knit. Besides one son, Katherine leaves behind a Sister-in-law, Geneva Smith and her husband Hagood of Rains and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends who will greatly miss her. Graveside services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Thursday, June 4 at Red Hill Memorial Gardens Cemetery, with the Rev. Mike Watkins officiating. The services will be directed by Cox-Collins Funeral Home. Visitation will be held Wednesday evening from 6:00 until 8:00 P.M. at Cox-Collins Funeral Home.
