CHAPIN - Nadine Chapman Fetner, 83, of Chapin passed away Sunday, November 23, 2008. She was born June 14, 1925, a daughter of the late Samuel Robeson and Carrie Best Chapman of Mullins. A funeral service will be held 2 o'clock, Wednesday, November 26, 2008, at Chapin United Methodist Church, 415 Lexington Lane, Chapin, with The Rev. Jody Flowers officiating. Mrs. Fetner will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. Burial will follow at Greenlawn Memorial Park. Following graduation from Mullins High School in 1942, she moved to Columbia and was a secretary to the Post Exchange officer at Fort Jackson. During World War II, she attended the old Palmetto School of Aeronautics and aircraft mechanics school to work on B-25s at Columbia Army Air Base. While there, she met her future husband, Ed Fetner, an instructor at the school, and they were married in December 1943. In 1973, she and her husband moved from Belvedere in Columbia to Lake Murray near Chapin where they have lived for the past 35 years in Shady Acres. She retired as a margin specialist in 1987 from Merrill Lynch in Columbia. Survivors include her husband of 65 years, Edward H. "Ed" Fetner, Jr. and their children, Carolyn Rosa Fetner, Edward H. "Ted" Fetner, III and wife, Debra McLellan Fetner of Charleston; grandchildren, Alissa Claire Fetner of Baltimore and George Samuel Fetner of Charleston and Columbia. LEXINGTON | Larry K. Davis, 54, of Lexington, died Saturday, November 22, 2008 after an extended illness. It was a long and courageous journey. Larry was born November 7, 1954 in Marion, South Carolina, and grew up in Myrtle Beach, graduating from Myrtle Beach High School. Larry played baseball at Newberry College and also Coastal Carolina University, where he graduated with a degree in business. Larry had a distinguished career as an accounts manager for Clean Harbors Environmental Services for 28 years, and traveled extensively. He was a faithful member of Riverland Hills Baptist Church for 21 years, where he served as Sunday School teacher and in other leadership roles. Larry was deeply devoted to his family, and lived life as fully as his health would allow. After his diagnosis with cancer Larry inspired others with his incredible faith, discipline, and determination to continue working and enjoying life as much as possible. He became an active volunteer with Relay for Life along with his family. ''LD'' was an avid sports fan, especially cheering on the Carolina Gamecocks and the Atlanta Braves. He loved music, his lifelong friends, the beach, and celebrating the many achievements of his wife and daughters. Larry's sense of humor and generosity endeared him to everyone he met. Larry is survived by his wife, Cathy, and their two daughters, Shelley and Holley; his mother, Margaret S. Davis of Myrtle Beach; two brothers, Dr. Ron (Martha) Davis of Kingsport, Tenn., and Dr. Glenn (Patti) Davis of Winston-Salem, N.C.; a sister, Ellen Davis of Myrtle Beach; three nieces; one nephew; and countless friends. CONWAY | Mrs. Ophelia Buck Lee, 91, made the transition to her heavenly home November 19, 2008. Mrs. Lee was born September 5, 1917 the fourth child of Fred W. Buck and Sarah Williams Buck. Born in the Toddville section of Horry County, her early education was obtained in the Popular community. She attended and graduated from Whittemore High School, Conway, in 1937. Throughout the years Mrs. Lee was devoted to her family, God, church and Order of the Eastern Star. She was an active member of Bethel AME Church for over 70 years where she served in many capacities including Pulpit Aid Board secretary, and Senior Choir Treasurer. Mrs. Lee was also an active member of the Wisteria Garden Club for many years and took great pride in tending house plants and landscape gardening. One of her primary passions was her affiliation with Order of the Eastern Star. Over the years she had the distinction of serving as treasurer and grand associate deputy of District Six. On the local level she served as Worthy Matron of Silver Star Chapter 172 for 25 years. Left to cherish fond memories of Mrs. Lee are two sons, Dr. James E. (Patricia) Lee Sr. of Conway, and Don F. (Erma) Lee of Hyattsville, Md.; three sisters, Mrs. Mildred Vereen of Conway, Mrs. Lavern Livingston of North Myrtle Beach, and Mrs. Thomasina Ponder of New York, New York; one son-in-law, Louis H. Cooper of Mullins; two sisters-in-law, Lillie Mae Lee of Philadelphia, Pa., and Albertine Reid of Bronx, New York. The pride of her life was her seven grandchildren. Her eldest, Roger (Powanda) Cooper she partially raised as her own. Also left to mourn her passing are five great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren and a host of sorrowing relatives and friends. Over the years, she became the matriarch of the family and a surrogate mother figure for many of her beloved nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by two brothers; four sisters; one daughter, Daisy Cooper; and her beloved husband of 71 years, Richard A. Lee. MULLINS — Mrs. Juanita Nita Johnson Carter Martin died Thursday, October 30, 2008, in her home. She was born on October 27, 1933 to the late James Olan and Fannie Lewis Johnson of Marion. She was predeceased by her first husband of 27 years, Harry C. Carter, Sr., her second husband of 16 years, William E. Martin, Sr., a son Franklin D. Frankie Carter, 3 sisters and 2 brothers. Mrs. Martin in survived by a son, Harry C. Carter, Jr. and his wife, Kathy, of Hilton Head Island; a sister, Eva Floyd of North Carolina; 2 step-sons, William Billy Martin, Jr. and his wife, Crystal of Concord, NC and Guy Martin and his wife, Tracy of Fort Mill, SC; 5 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. She was especially close to and very proud of her grandson, Eric Garris and his family of Marion. Mrs. Martin was an active member of Mullins First Baptist Church and the Senior Saints Choir. She had a wonderful sense of humor, loved people, loved her church, and volunteered in numerous capacities especially at her church. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm on Sunday, November 2, 2008, at Mullins First Baptist Church directed by Richardson Funeral Home of Marion. The Rev. Jim Kirkland will be officiating. Burial will follow at Palmetto Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Marion. Visitation will be held on Saturday, November 1st, from 6:00-8:00 pm at the funeral home. He was born August 22, 1962 in Logan County, West Virginia, a son of Curtis C. and Jeanette Ferrell Adkins. He was an Assistant Manager for Sav-Way stores. Mr. Adkins was a US Army veteran, having served with the 82nd Airborne. Surviving Mr. Adkins in addition to his wife of the home and his parents of Nichols are: 2 Sons: John Michael Adkins, Jr. of Texas and Nolan M.C.Adkins of Nichols; 6 Daughters: Carolyn Fitzwater, Tabitha Adkins and Teresa Adkins, all of Texas and Victoria D.R.
