She was born December 25, 1929, in Nichols, SC, a daughter of the late Emory Lloyd Elliott and Ella Smith Elliott. She is also predeceased by two brothers, Billy Elliott and Lloyd Elliott. Mrs. Jordan attended Oak Grove Freewill Baptist Church. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She is survived by her husband, Burnie F. Jordan of Conway; two daughters, Brenda Cannon Stuckey of Murrells Inlet, and Wanda Cannon Sigler of Kingstree; one son, Victor Leo Cannon (Bobbie) from Georgia; one stepson, Burnie Carl Jordan (Judy); three stepdaughters, Joanne Gerald (Jimmy), Joyce Singleton (Robert) and Theresa Rabon (Eddie), all of Conway; two sisters, Peggy Hutson (Jim) of Charleston, and Evelyn Newell (Joe Thomas) of North Charleston; twenty-two grandchildren; thirty-five great grandchildren and many other family and friends who will miss her. She was born January 2, 1922 in Anson County, N.C., a daughter of the late John Cleveland J.C. and Nanny Mise Ellis. Mrs. Richardson retired from the Brittons Neck schools and was a homemaker. Richardson of Brittons Neck and Frank J. Richardson of Brittons Neck; a Daughter: Nancy R.     3. The Robeson County History Museum announces the hosting of a celebration to celebrate the 221st birthday of Robeson County. The cake cutting and opening of the "It Came in the Mail" exhibit will be Tuesday, January 6, 2009 at 5pm in the mail exhibit gallery of the museum at 101 S. Elm Street, Lumberton. The exhibit will highlight the rich and diverse history of Robeson County through vintage postcards and letters. The exhibit will also share thehistory of the postoffices of the county gathered from vintage newspapers. The newspapers revealed items like the fact that in 1803 you cold ride on the mail coach from Charleston to Lumberton for $14.50; the 1906 robbery of over $3,000 in cash and jewelry from the mail; conversations about theplacement of the Lumberton postoffices in 1913 and the 1930s. The postcards fall into the following categories Street Scenes; Water and Rails; Agriculture, Industry, and Business; Hotels and Inns; Homes; Education; Military; Religion; Social Life and Popular Diversions; and Robeson Lost – Hoke County. They include postcards from Rev. James Burt MacLeod and his daughter, Suzie McLeod Dedrick, who loaned images from thepostcard collection of Alexander Hamilton MacLeod; John and Betty Edens; Mutt McCoy; Paul Valenti; Carla Baxley; Tom Parker; and the Hubbard Tyner Collection.     2. Motte Legare Hay, 87, died peacefully at Roper Hospital on Saturday evening, January 3, 2009. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, January 6, 2009 at three o'clock at Johns Island Presbyterian Church. Interment, churchyard. Friends may call at J. HENRY STUHR, INC., DOWNTOWN CHAPEL, Monday from four until six o'clock. Motte was born April 30, 1921 in Charleston, SC. She was the daughter of Sarah Motte Legare Clement and Eugene Gordon Hay. She graduated from St. Johns High School and received a B.A. degree in history from Winthrop College in 1943. She taught in the St. Andrew's Elementary School district for 37 years, retiring from Stono Park Elementary School in 1980. She was a lifelong member of Johns Island Presbyterian Church. She is survived by her brother, Eugene Gordon Hay (Charlotte) of Charleston, SC; and three sisters, Mary Hay Jenkins of Johns Island, SC, Ann Hay Thomas of Mullins, SC and Lydia Hay Pedersen (Pete) of Johns Island, SC; and two sisters-in-law, Gertrude S. Hay and Rosa W. Hay. She was predeceased by her parents and two brothers, William Clement Hay and Daniel Ellis Hay, Jr. She is also survived by a large number of very close nieces and nephews including her brother's family with whom she lived for many years, E.     2. DAVIS, Gwen MARION - Gwen Shepherd Davis passed away Saturday, January 3, 2009, after an extended illness. A graveside service will be held at Palmer Cemetery in the Cenentary Community Tuesday, January 6, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. The family will receive friends following the ceremony at Ann Davis Lane's home in Centenary, the family home place. Services will be conducted by Richardson Funeral Home. Born December 14, 1938 in Cenentary, SC, Gwen was the daughter of the late Wendell Davis and Frances Shepherd Davis. She finished high school at Rains-Cenentary High School in 1957. She was Valedictorian of her graduating class, and an All-State basketball player. Gwen graduated from Converse College in 1961, where she majored in art. After leaving Converse, she began her work career at Miller and Rhoads department stores in Richmond, VA in art position. Later, Gwen returned to South Carolina to begin her twenty-eight year teaching career as an art an elementary school teacher. She taught in the public schools in Sumter, New Ellenton, Swansea, Blythewood and N. Charleston. She also taught in Savannah, GA. Gwen took breaks in her teaching career to earn her Master of Fine Arts degree from the University of South Carolina, where her thesis brought together much new information about the printmakers of Charleston Renaissance. She also earned a Bachelor's Degree in Interior Design from the Savannah College of Art and Design. Gwen established her permanent home in Charleston and lived there for many years. After retiring from teaching, she became an antique dealer and for many years was associated with the Antiques of South Windermere in Charleston. When growing up, Gwen was a "tomboy" and always a sports enthusiast. Her fierce competitiveness in basketball and tennis in her younger years let to her ardent support of USC's Lady Gamecocks basketball and track programs in her retirement. Gwen is survived by two sisters, Ann Davis Lane of Cenentary and Jane Davis James (Marshall) of Maxton, NC; a brother, James Clement Davis, II (Judy) of Marion, SC; and several nieces and nephews.     2. MURRELLS INLET | Thomas Edward Calhoun Dowling (TEC) of Murrells Inlet, passed away Saturday, January 3, 2009 after a long and valiant battle against cancer. Mr. Dowling was born June 24, 1947 in Mullins, South Carolina, a son of the late James Harry and Sarah Lane Dowling. Mr. Dowling is survived by his wife, Tippy Dowling; one son, Eddie, his wife Kelli, and two granddaughters, Abby and Emma Dowling, all of Fort Mill; two daughters, Krissy Larson and husband, Chris, of Myrtle Beach and Kelsey Dowling of Fort Mill; sister, Sarah Lane Norton and husband, Ronnie, of Murrells Inlet; brother, Joe Dowling and wife Kathy of Garden City; and many other family and friends who will miss him. Mr. Dowling received a Bachelor of Science degree from Pembroke State University, and a Master of Education and Education Specialist degrees from the University of South Carolina. His teaching career began at Blenheim Elementary School and continued at Clio High School, where he also served as coach of both boys and girls basketball teams and the football team. Mr. Dowling's career carried him through successive positions as assistant principal of Butler High School, Hartsville; principal of Lamar High School, Lamar; Supervisor with the Office of School District Accreditation and Assessment of the State Department of Education; Director of Middle and Secondary Education for Dorchester School District Two, Summerville; District Superintendent of Newberry County; Superintendent of Fort Mill School District; and Interim Superintendent for Richland/Lexington District 5, Irmo. Upon retirement to Murrells Inlet he continued to serve the field of education by serving as an Education Consultant for Moseley Architect. His strong faith and altruistic spirit is reflected in his dedicated service through numerous activities, including Clio Rescue Squad, Hartsville Sertoma Club, Lamar Christmas Parade Committee, Lamar UMC, SC High School League Executive Committee, Newberry and Fort Mill Rotary Clubs, Fort Mill Chamber of Commerce, and YMCA Board. In addition to his community activities, Mr. Dowling served on numerous educational consortia, such as The Olde English Consortium, and other associations and committees relating to the field of education, such as SC Association of School Administrators, and Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. Mr. Dowling was named Conference Coach of the Year for basketball and football, and has been recognized as one of the Outstanding Young Men in America. He also received service awards from the town of Lamar, the S.C. High School League, and the SACS CASI Service Award, and was selected by the S.C. Vocational Directors Association as Superintendent of the Year. He was recognized by the S.C. House of Representatives with Resolution H 3970, as well as with the Paul Harris Fellow Award by the Fort Mill Rotary Club. He has published numerous articles, has been a respected lecturer at different events across the state, and was active in the implementation of the Summer Leadership Conference for School Administrators. Mr. Dowling's dedication to his career was matched by his love for his family and friends. He was a beloved ''Papa'' to his grandchildren, and the instigator of golf tournaments in Newberry and Myrtle Beach, which were cherished by everyone that participated. He enjoyed most being surrounded by his family where he would cook his infamous chili and Hoppin' John while practicing his shagging techniques. More often you would find him playing golf, fishing, or just enjoying a good book. He was a beloved husband, father, brother, educator, mentor, and friend.     2. MULLINS — Mrs. Ernest Hope King Corley, widow of James S. Corley, Jr., died Wednesday, December 31, 2008 at home surrounded by her family. She was born June 11, 1916 in Nash, Oklahoma. She was the daughter of the late Ernest Holliday King and Hope Howard King. Mrs. Corley graduated from Columbia College in 1937. She was an organizing member of the Drowning Creek Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She was a gourmet cook and an avid bridge player. Mrs. Corley was a founding member and last survivor of the Golden Girls Bridge Club. She was the quintessential soccer mom. Mrs. Corley was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Mullins. Surviving are: her Daughter, Judith Dixon Underwood of Mullins; 2 Sons, James Self Corley, III and his wife Tina of Greenwood and Robert Howard Corley and his wife Mary Ann of Mullins; a Grandson, Michael Tredway Collins and his wife Tracey of Bluefield, W.     1. [SCMARION] Lacy Cornelius Willoughby
    2. MYRTLE BEACH | Mr. Lacy Cornelius Willoughby, 87, passed away Saturday, December 27, 2008, at Waccamaw Community Hospital. Mr. Willoughby was born April 14, 1921 in Horry County, South Carolina, the son of the late Clephus and Belle Graham Willoughby. He was preceded in death by his brother, J.C. Willoughby; and his sister, Lumay Willoughby. A veteran of World War II, Lacy served in the U.S. Army Air Corps, 354th Bomber Squadron. He was wounded in combat over Germany and is a Purple Heart recipient. After the war, he returned home to the Pleasant View community of Horry County and grew tobacco, corn, and cotton on the family farm. In 1957 he moved to Myrtle Beach and began his career in the motel business, first purchasing Green's Court, and in later years building Beachcomber Motor Inn and purchasing Beach Dunes. Lacy retired at age 50, and together with his wife enjoyed traveling and pursuing his hobby of fishing. He was always eager to share his freshwater catch with family and friends. He was also and avid reader who enjoyed a wide variety of periodicals and books. A long-time member of the First Baptist Church in Myrtle Beach, he practiced and taught his children to be fair and honest in business as well as in life, and to never take advantage of any person. Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Billie T. Willoughby; his son, Harry G. Willoughby and wife, Bre, of Myrtle Beach; his daughter, Carol W. Bair and husband, Robert, of Myrtle Beach; his two sisters, Lois W. Hucks of Conway and Vera W. Phipps of Mullins; four grandchildren, Shannon Miller, Ashley Phillips, Kimberly Land, and Wyatt Willoughby; and three great-grandchildren, Breland, Bella, and John Land. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, December 30, 2008, at McMillan-Small Funeral Home with the Rev. Larry Cashatt officiating. Burial will follow in the Ocean Woods Memorial Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5 until 7 p.m. Monday, December 29, 2008 at McMillan-Small Funeral Home.     2. Mrs. Grace Martin Ellis, 88 ,widow of Clement Robert Ellis, Jr. died Saturday,December 27, 2008 at Mullins Nursing Center. She was born August 17, 1920 in Marion County, a daughter of the late Whitton Albert Martin, Sr. and the late Donnie Rogers Martin. Mrs. Ellis was manager of Catos for several years. She was a member of Marion Baptist Church. Surviving Mrs. Ellis are: 2 Daughters: Bobbie Ellis Bullard of Marion and Marcia Ellis Owens of Marion; 2 Grandchildren: Kevin Williamson and his wife Jennifer and Darren Bullard and his wife Kim; 4 Great Grandchildren: Greyson Williamson, Kristin Henderson, Kolin Bullard and Kimberlin Bullard; 2 Brothers: John D. Martin and his wife Nancy of Mullins and Buddy Martin and his wife Peggy of Fort Mill; 3 Sisters: Sug M. Fenters of Mullins, Donnie M. Hughes of Mullins and Martha M. McLane of Mullins; and several special nieces and nephews. Mrs. Ellis was predeceased by a son-in-law, Rex Bullard, a brother, Whit Martin, 2 Sisters, Mary Sue Blount and Dancil M.
