MYRTLE BEACH | Ruby R. Arnold died Wednesday, April 2, 2009 at the Myrtle Beach Manor. She was born July 25 1908 Ruby Inez Russ, in Conway, South Carolina. Ruby Arnold graduated from Conway High School and Winthrop College, and was married to Dr. Morton Arnold for 64 years before his death in 1998. She lived in the town of Windham Conn., until 2000 when she moved home to South Carolina. Ruby had two children, Morton Richard Arnold, deceased, and Susan Ann Arnold. Ruby was a devoted wife and mother who tackled everything in life with enthusiasm and dedication. She was a life-long volunteer in community activities, including the Women's Auxiliary to the Willimantic Community Memorial Hospital and in 1964 she was the Regional Vice President of the American Medical Association's Women's Auxiliary. She formed and was the leader of a Girl Scout Troop in Windham Center and supported and volunteered at the Windham Congregational Church. Ruby was a founding member of the Willimantic 36 Club. In the summer of 2008 Ruby celebrated her 100th birthday with a family reunion in Myrtle Beach. Ruby survived her brothers, Greer of Conway, Winston of Pennsylvania, and Carlyle Russ of Greenville; and her sisters, Ruth Graham of Conway, and Alma Sullivan of Windham Center, Conn. She will be remembered by her family and friends as the quintessential southern lady who possessed grace and intelligence and lived a happy, productive and adventurous life. Her wit and good humor, courage, and strength of character have been an inspiration to her daughter and granddaughter. Ms Lindsay was born on January 2, 1942, in Newberry the daughter of John B. and Atlee Davis Lindsay. Mrs. Wanda Lynn Pyrlik, age 63, formerly of West Ashley, passed away Monday, March 30, 2009 at a local hospital. MULLINS — Floretta Richardson Boyd, 79, wife of John Herbert Boyd, died Monday, March 30, 2009 at Marion County Medical Center following an extended illness. Mrs. Boyd was a native of Marion County, the daughter of Manning Humbert Richardson and Fleetie Mae Martin Richardson of Brittons Neck. She graduated from Furman University with highest honors and taught in junior and senior high schools in Lake City, Hartsville, Asheville and Greenwood. She also attended Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Tx., where she pursued a Masters degree in Religious Education. She served as a home missionary in Arkansas, New Mexico and New Orleans. Mrs. Boyd was active in church and community pursuits. She served faithfully at Mullins First Baptist Church as Womens Missionary Union director and as Sunday School teacher of adults for many years. She was honored in 2008 when a WMU group was renamed the Floretta Boyd Group. She was also a past member of the Marion County Historical Society. Mrs. Boyd was a dedicated Christian, an exceptional teacher, a loyal friend and a devoted mother and grandmother. She is survived by her Husband of 53 years; a Daughter, Sharon Lynette Boyd Lancaster of Mauldin; 2 Grandsons, Matthew Benjamin Lancaster and Jonathan Thomas Lancaster of Mauldin, whom she adored; and a Sister, Odessa Rishardson Zoerb of Kingsport, Tn. MARION — Henry Donald Bobby Gerald, 67, died Sunday, March 22, 2009, at Carolinas Hospital in Florence, after a brief illness. He is also predeceased by a brother, Harold Gerald and sisters, Betty Lou Price and Mary Alice Williamson. He was a member of Marion Baptist Church and the Oak Tree Sunday School Class. Mr. Gerald was the mayor of Marion, SC, a position he held for the last 24 years. and former owner of Bobby Gerald Ford. Bobby was a 1960 graduate of Marion High School. He began working as a salesman for Neil Padgett Motors at the age of 16 and after graduation became a full time salesman. Mayor Gerald took advantage of every salesmanship course offered by the Ford Motor Company, and completed the Dale Carnegie Course. Through the years he won every award for salesmanship given by Ford. In 1967 he joined forces with Earl Collins Ford Motor Company, serving there as General Manager and Executive Vice-President, until Earl Collins retired, at which time Mr. Gerald purchased the business in 1980. Mr. Gerald was appointed as a member of the Marion County Board of Commissioners by Ralph Gasque in 1975. Then under the Home Rule, he ran for County Council and was elected to his first term as a member of Marion County Council in January 1977, where he served as Vice-Chairman of the Council. He later served as Chairman of the Council from January 2, 1979 until June 30, 1982. In June 1982, he was appointed by the Marion County Delegation as a member of the State Highway Commissioners, serving this post until June 1985 when he ran for the Office of Mayor of the City of Marion. Mayor Gerald was also past President of the Jaycees, past President of the State Jaycees, charter member of Mullins Rotary Club, member of the Marion Civitan Club, Council of Pee Dee Regional Government, and member of SC Automobile Dealers Association. Some of Mayor Geralds awards include: Honorary 1st Sergeant Award for Leadership and Support of Company A 1st Battalion 263 Armor, Marion, SC, Catholic Mens Club Man of the Year in 1987, Board of Directors Award in 1995 from Historic Marion Revitalization Association, Jaycee Downtown Development Association Award, Community Service Award in 1995 from the Marion Chamber of Commerce, Public Service award in 1996, American Hometown Leadership Award in 1999. MARION — William Billy Alford, 52, died Thursday, March 19, 2009 at his home after an illness. He was born November 25, 1956 in Sumter, a son of Faye Stewart Alford and the late William Alford. Billy was a lifelong resident of Knife Island in Marion County, where he was an avid hunter and fisherman. He loved everything pertaining to the outdoors.He was also an avid NASCAR fan. Billy was a graduate of Marion High School. Sophia Augustus Wells Barnes, age 80, of Savannah, passed away at her residence on March 15, 2009. Sophia was born in Mullins Hospital in Marion County, SC, to the late William Richard Jr. and Jessie Elizabeth Copes Wells. She later moved to Sumter, SC, until she became a resident to Savannah in 1950. She was married to her beloved late husband Leonard Morgan Bob Barnes in 1950. She was a charter member of Isle of Hope Baptist Church where she also served in the choir, leader in training union, Sunday school teacher, and song leader and pianist for Marshview Inn Bible Study. Sophia was a graduate of Edmonds High School in Sumter, SC, and a graduate of Roper Hospital,. She also graduated from the Medical College of South Carolina in 1949 and The University of South Carolina in 1950 with a Bachelor of Nursing Degree. She began working at Georgia Regional Hospital of Savannah when it opened on November 2, 1970 and worked a year in nursing after which she served in the training department as an instructor and as Hospital Librarian until her retirement on December 31, 1990. Sophia was a member of numerous genealogical societies including The Sulzbergers and The First Families of South Carolina 1670-1700. Sophia is survived by daughters Rebecca Barnes Carriere (Joe) of Montezuma, NC, Florence Barnes Shepley (Raymond JR.) of Tucker, GA, and Rivanna Barnes Dudley (John C.) of Gilbert, AZ; sons Rev. William Leonard Barnes (Puttie P.) of Savannah, Mark Albert Barnes (Deborah J.) of Florence, SC, and Major Morgan Franklin Barnes (Major Lauralee W.) of Birmingham, AL; sister Betty Harrell of Florence, SC; grandchildren Jonathan Barnes (Michelle), Bethany B. Manning (Matthew), James Barnes (Stephanie), Blake Barnes, Keith Barnes, Crystal Dudley (Jamie), Philip Hongkham (Jamie), and Marsha Hongkham; 4 step grandchildren, 1 great granddaughter, 11 great grandsons, and 3 step great grandsons. Mrs. Roberts was born August 23, 1935, a daughter of the late Frazier and Helen Rabon Graham. She is predeceased by her husband, J.J. Roberts; two brothers, Hubert and Eugene Graham; and one great-grandchild, Jonathan Wayne Guyton II. She enjoyed and loved having her family around her all the time. She especially loved keeping her grandchildren. When not keeping children she enjoyed sewing. She was born February 19, 1920 in Brooklyn, New York, a daughter of the late Francisco Maggipinto and Marie Pugliese Maggipinto. Helen Zeman was a member of the Marion Presbyterian Church. She was an avid golfer, gardner and loved fishing. She was a devoted wife, Mother, Grandmother and Great Grandmother. Survivors include Freddie Zeman, her husband of 71 years; three daughters, Eleanore Z. Barlow of Myrtle Beach, Pat Z. (Jack) Bethea of Florence and Jody Z.
