    3. Cathy, I'd appreciate it very much. I know I found Ayrich's son, William J. Coward & his family listed in the 1860 census, but Ayrich was still in Williamsburg County at that time. I suspect he moved to FL shortly after that. William J. Coward died during the Civil War, and by 1870, his widow and children were back in Williamsburg County (Lynches Creek area, near Coward-Scranton). I have Ayrich Coward's death date as 10 Mar 1862, if that helps. I'm also fairly certain that some members of the family were associated with Paran Baptist Church. Donali | | Donali, I was out of state for 11 days so just now saw your e-mail. I am no | sure about the Ayrich Coward you mentioned but can keep my eyes open for the | name. I do remember there being a family of Cowards in the area. I'll let | you know if I find something. | Cathy | | | ==== SCMARION Mailing List ==== | Marion County SCGenWeb site: | http://www.geocities.com/BourbonStreet/1786/marion.html | |

    1. Re: [SCMARION-L] Looking For Records Marion Co.

    3. Hi Lorna, I can answer the deed question (probably with more info than you wanted to know). In most cases, and in most counties, the "original" deeds were kept by the persons selling and buying the land (and usually lost over the years). The clerk of court (or whomever) would make a hand copy to record in the Deed book. The copy is supposed to be exact, but of course, anytime you hand transcribe a record there is room for error. Consider that the deeds (The originals) were written in many different handwritings, some legible, some not, and the Clerk had to interpret that over and over. If you look at a deed book, you will see all the deeds are in the same hand writing (the clerks). They were usually copied very soon after the deed was made, though sometimes several years later. They are supposed to be complete copies (not abstracts). You will only find abstracts in published versions of the deed books. None of those in the Court House are abstracts. And yes, the Marion Court House (or is it in the Marion Archives now?) has the Deed Books with the complete deeds (though they are all the clerk's copy, not the originals). I've gone through them before, a few years ago, and they were in fairly good shape, and fairly well organized. I suppose they are way better organized now that the Archives has been set up. Hope this helps! Good luck with your Cameron research. 2. Hello List, Could someone tell me if the Clerk or Courts would house the actual deeds (not the abstracts) for the year 1799 and the year 1803. Also, is there anyone that can look up tax list for the years 1814 to 1825 for a Lavender/Levander/Levinder/Lewinder/Levin Cameron? Also, are there any Cameron's listed with wills in the late 1700 and early 1800's for Marion County or near by? Thanks, Lorna

    3. Hey Larry i will see what I can find out- I wish I had all day to do this- I am so close on answers for things but don't have enough time to research and write down and email and all of that- We are having a family reunion on July 8- I will see if I can get some of your answers for you- I don't know if on the site their is a listing for Little Bless church in Oak Grove, but I think that is where I found Illa and Lewis buried, one of them if not both. Where are you located at? I have been to most of the cemetaries between bennetsville and latta on highway 38- Now how would you be connected? To the Hayes? You know I had not thought about those 2 names. They are in different generations though. Debbie >

    2. L. Jones
    3. In a message to this list on 2/5/00, Jo Church Dickerson very kindly supplied the following census information. (Many thanks, Jo!) She knew I was looking for information on an Eben Price. Well, I finally got information from the Florence (SC) cemetery where the Eben Price with old Marion County connections was buried. His tombstone gives his birth year as 1856. His mother is supposed to have been Avarilla Hays. In other words, I feel confident this is the right one. I can see why the census taker might have found it easier to write A. than Avarilla. If any of you ever run across this specific Charles Price or D. H. Price or anyone else from this branch, I would love to know. Thanks. Larry Jones 1860 Marion census also lists: >HH #709 >John Price age 28 >A. Price 40 >Chas. Price 5 >Evin or Ebin Price 4 (as given in census book -jcd) >D.H. Price 3/12 >This John is enumerated between Hugh Price age 26 and E. Price age 65. Also >among Jacksons and Hyotts and near Surls and Doves - clearly Maple Swamp >area.

    3. Thanks to Deborah for sharing information on the Powers family with the list. Deborah, I have questions rather than answers. If you happen to be in touch with any of these folks and learn any of these answers, I would love to know. Regarding the Ila/Illa/Iler/Isla Hayes who married Lewis Powers... there was a message on this list 8/1/00 from Catherine Dabbs, at that time at dabbs@mindspring.com but forwarded by Peggy Price which mentions them. I can't help but wonder if Iller could be the daughter of Henry Hayes who lived in the Oak Grove community and was a son of Clayton D. and Deborah J. Hayes and grandson of Henry H. and Marina Dew Hayes. I don't know if I am connecting these folks correctly. If so, I would love more up-to-date information on this family if anyone has it. There was also a Robert A. Powers who married a Nettie Hayes b. ca. 1900. I wonder if he fits into this Powers family. (I have info on Nettie's family background, which I can share.) I wonder too who Emory Hayes was who married Ruby Powers and which Berry family Vera Mae, who married Lacie Powers was from. I wonder too which branch of the Jackson family this Asberry Jackson was from. I realize that you, Deborah, may not know answers to these questions, but I put these questions out there in case anyone knows. Many thanks. Larry Jones

    1. [SCMARION-L] 1820 Census
    2. In reply to Lorna: The print version of the 1820 Census follows the microfilm, best I can tell. The only known existing copy of the 1820 Census for Marion District, SC - the one that is on microfilm - is in rough alphabetical order. This was probably due to the original enumeration being copied, and whoever copied it felt they were performing a service of some sort by placing the names in alphabetical order. In earlier censuses, the original returns may have been rewritten by the census taker himself or copied by a court clerk. This was due to the necessity of sending a copy of the original to Washington. It is these copies that were microfilmed - the originals remained in the counties, and for the most part have been lost. For more on copies of census records, the copies that survived, and all sorts of other interesting, little known facts about the early census enumerations, see any of a number of articles online by or quoting William Dollarhide. (A search on google.com will turn up dozens of references.) According to Dollarhide, copies of the original enumerations often were alphabetized, use ditto marks for surnames, and have frequent omissions, mispellings of names and incorrectly copied ages.
