Winkie, I have been doing genealogy for over twenty years, off and on, but it has been a lot more fun doing it with others since I have been on the computer. Over the years, attending workshops, etc. I have found out about books that offer so much to those of us who cannot always spend the time researching in the courthouses of our ancestors. One of my first purchases was "ANCESTRAL KEY TO THE PEE DEE", by a former librarian named Mary Belle Manning Bethea who lived and worked in Latta. One of the best things about the book is the Surname roster which list not only marriages, but children and in-laws as well. It also lists sources where more information can be found on each person. Since you are interested in so many of the families of this area, you might enjoy owning your own copy of this book. It is full of Betheas. I cannot tell you how often I have had to refer to it. I have no idea where you can get a copy, but someone on this list may be able to help you. There are plenty of bookstores around selling old copies of these books as well. I would like to get a copy of the "THE HISTORY OF DILLON CO." by Durward T. Stokes, and need to check out some of my sources unless someone on this list knows for sure where I might be able to find a copy. Thanks. Joanne H. New Bern,NC harleyclan@coastalnet.com
tami... contact me at tpmetp@aol.com i have additional info i can help you with.. you had some i did not have, as well. your watsons did move to butler co. al and they are connected to my lines via marriages... i'll be happy to share what i have and also give you some contacts on the watson line that would have more info than me.. regards, tony powell pensacola, fl
In the 1800-1810 Census is listed a Mary Cameron and a Dempsey Cameron In the 1790 Georgetown District, Prince George Parish is a Mary Cammeron and a Mary Cammeron Jr. I looked on the old map and saw that Marion Co. was in Georgetown District in that year. Does anyone on the list have any information on these Mary's and Dempsey Cameron's? Thanks, Lorna

Winkie, there's a Bethea web site that you might want to look at. It's at http://www.betheafamily.org. It even has a program from one of the reunions. Hello listers, I am just now starting to actively search for my Watson ancestors. To start with I am looking for a Gilbert Watson who was born circa 1797 in NC I believe (I could be wrong!), but who married a Nancy PROCTOR on May 21, 1820 in Little Rock, Marion Co, SC. They had these children (that I know of...and I could have some wrong): 1) Elizabeth (or Sarah Elizabeth) Watson: b. 1829 - d. 1926. Married an Austin Bradley on March 16, 1850. As of 1915 she was living in Mobile, AL (mentioned in her brother Andrew Jackson Watson's obituary) 2) Mary Ann Watson b. 7/18/1829. Dead by 1915. 3) Rhoda Ann Watson b. approx 1844? married a David W. Norvell/Norwell on March 9, 1868 in Butler Co, AL She was still alive in 1915 and living in Atlanta, GA 4) Andrew Jackson Watson (my great-great-grandfather): b 1835. d: Oct. 29, 1915. married soon after the Civil War to Mary Mapes (he was her 2nd husband), and moved with family to Butler Co, AL. 5) Willoby (W.R......I think this is him) Watson b. 1823 married Elizabeth Campbell on Dec 24, 1844 in Pike Co, AL. He eventually moved to Butler Co, AL too. In 1915 he was in River Falls (if this is W.V. Watson) I have a little further information on Willoby's descendents, and of course Andrew Jacksons. But this is all I have of this generation and I don't have any idea about Gilbert's parentage. Or Nancy's either. Any of this sound familiar? I'd love to hear from anyone to whom this seems familiar. Thanks, Tami (Brewer) Church researching: BREWER (PA-OH) BIRCH (WV/VA-OH) BRADY(PA) BRIGGS(MI-LA-MI-OH) CANEPA (ITALY-LA-MI-OH) PERANO (ITALY-LA-MI-OH) WATSON (SC-AL) GROCHOWSKI (POLAND-NY-OH) PALASKI (NY-OH) PULASKI (AL) PORTERFIELD (OH) ECKLER (NY-OH) and many others!!
Joanne, You asked about Minturn and Dothan Methodist churches. Here is what I found in "The History of Dillon County" by Durward T. Stokes: Beulah Originated as Ivey's Methodist Church, located one mile south of Clio, Marlboro County. In 1885, the church divided, Ivey's moving into the town of Clio and the new congregation, named Beulah, moving east on the road to Little Rock, now SC Hwy no. 9, about one-half mile west of the old Marion County line. George McPherson Boyd was the first pastor of the church, which continued to function at its Marlboro County site until 1922. On November 8, Elizabeth S. Stackhouse donated one-half acre of land near Minturn to P. L. Bethea, M. F. Edwards, and J. L. Stanton, Sr., trustees for the Methodist Church, South. In 1924, Beulah moved into a brick building on this site. However, as changes in population and other factors caused the membership to dwindle, the church was discontinued in 1936 and its members transferred to St. Paul's at Little Rock. J. H. Justus was the last pastor of this church, whose membership was 165 at the turn of the century." My father built the brick church at Minturn and I remember when it was going up. The schoolhouse was next door and Papa would go home for lunch before our noon recess and bring something hot back for my lunch. That was a treat that I missed after the church was finished. Although we were Presbyterian and I attended Reedy Creek on Sunday mornings, I went quiet often to the Methodist church as their services were in the afternoon. Dothan "Organized in 1786 under the leadership of Robert McKenzie and others, the church was first known as Bethea's Meeting House. It was located on the road between Harlleesville and Mar's Bluff, opposite the dwelling of John C. Bethea. It was also Known as Bethea Camp Ground, for camp meetings were held on the premises until at least 1809. About 1830, the congregation removed to a new log building at the present location. At this site the church continued to be active for a century, but in 1927 membership had shrunk to a number insufficient for proper maintenance. The remaining members of the congregation transferred their membership to Methodist churches in Dillon and Dothan today is only used for the annual reunions of the Bethea family." Mr. Stokes' book was published in 1978 and I don't know if the Bethea's still have their reunions there of not but I think they do because it seems I heard something about my husband's cousin, Mary Alice, attending one a few years ago. She was the wife of Preston Hardy who was a Bethea descendent and is buried there. Mr. P. L. Bethea that I told you about was of the same family as the Betheas who lived in the Dothan area. You also asked about records from the church at Minturn. I just don't have an answer for that.
