    1. Re: [SCMARION-L] Cemeteries and Tombstone photographs
    2. You mentioned in this email that one cemetery was marked off with lots for sale. If some one of the decendants go and claim to the family and maintain the cemetery the law will protect the cemetery from being destroyed. It can only be destroyed it some one does not maintain it and it is then protected. There is a law - Contact Glenn McConnell of Charleston for assistance, I am sure he represents that area in Columbia at the State House and is very involved with all things SOUTHERN Charles

    1. [SCMARION-L] John Wood family
    2. Marty Grant
    3. Hi all, I've just published a web page for my ancestors John Wood (c1750-1808) and Sarah B. --- (c1749-1837) of Marion Co, SC. This is a fairly new family for me, but much was found on them and their offspring in the probate records and equity records and census, etc. Sellers did not mention them, but had a lot to say about two of their sons-in-laws (David and Jesse Legette). Here is a brief outline of this family: John Wood, born c1740 or earlier, died 1808 Marion Dist, SC. Parents unknown. wife: Sarah B. --- (1749-1837), buried at Legette Cemetery Children: 1. Sarah Wood (c1765-1821) married Ezekiel Chinners (bef 1755-c1820), lived in Horry and Marion 2. Jesse Wood (c1765/74-1822) married Nancy ---. Children: Igdaliah (to FL), Rachel Jones, Allafair Wood, Rebecca Godbold, and Absalom Wood. Don't know who Rachel's Jones husband was, nor Rebecca's Godbold husband. 3. John Wood (c1774/90). Not much data. No record after 1809. Is this the Mr. Wood who married Unity Johnson, who was widowed by 1810? Unity was a daughter of Samuel and Mary Johnson of Temperance Hill area. 4. Rebecca Wood (1778-1850/60) married David Legette (1768-1850/60). Children: Levi, Abner, Martha, Elizabeth and Clara, and probably others. 5. Martha Wood (1779-1849) married Jesse Legette (1774-1828). Children: Ebenezer, Elizabeth M., David, Jesse, Sarah Martha, Ann W., Jane Ann, and Treacy (Theresa). 6. Ann Wood (1784/90-1841) married James James. My ancestors. Children: Addin W. James, Pinkney J. James, and possibly Malachi James and others. All my documentation is included on the pages, so check them out if interested. If anyone out there is connected to this family, please let me know. http://www.martygrant.com/gen/wood/wood-john-marion.htm Marty Grant (Marvin Grant Jr) e-mail: public@martygrant.com AIM: MartyGrantNC web: http://www.martygrant.com

    1. [SCMARION-L] Hubert Pierce "Hugh" Watson
    2. HELEN LANE CARMICHAEL
    3. The Florence Morning News Sunday August 26, 2001 Aug 25, 2001 Latta Coach Dies in Crash By CHRIS CLARK Morning News LATTA -- Hugh Watson, 31-year-old first-year head football coach and athletic director at Latta High School, died in an automobile accident early Saturday morning. Watson was returning home after his Vikings had won their season-opening game Friday night at Carver's Bay High School near Hemingway. Dillon County officials said he lost control of his truck and it overturned into a ditch, ejecting him into a wooded area. Watson is survived by his wife, Pamela "Marty" Watson, 4-year-old daughter Allison and 1-year-old son Pierce. A memorial service for Watson will be at 4 p.m. Monday in the Latta High School Gymnasium. The entire Dillon County school district will be dismissed from class on Monday at 1:30 p.m. in Watson's memory. In a recent interview with the Morning News, Watson proudly called himself "a Dillon County boy." While discussing the Vikings football program he said, "We're looking more at the future here." >From his time playing for Dillon head coach Jackie Hayes through his days coaching the Vikings, Watson was an integral part of Dillon County football. "I kind of grew up with him, even back to when I was a player at Dillon and he was in elementary school, and I remember he'd always want a tear-away jersey or something from our games," Hayes said. "As a child, Hugh had asthma and I'd go visit him in the hospital. "When he became a player here at Dillon, he wasn't one of the most talented players here but he started two years and was an all-conference player" he said. "He had a tremendous heart. He loved the Wildcats and he always wanted to be a coach." Hayes was on the telephone early Saturday morning congratulating Watson on Latta's success. Watson wanted to share the joy of Class A Latta's 14-6 win against Carver's Bay, a 2A school, with his friends. After nearly seven years as an assistant coach at Latta, Watson's dream of being a winning head coach had come true. "In the short period of time, it's amazing what he was doing with those kids at Latta. Hugh was a player's coach," Hayes said. "I'm devastated that such a young man with such a bright future has left us. "We were on the phone talking on until 2 a.m. or after, and that's late hours. But that's the hours that coaches keep sometimes when they're putting their all into a program." Doug Hinson was head coach at Latta each of the past two seasons before taking the head coaching job at Green Sea-Floyds this year. He became a close friend of Watson and, like Hayes, received an excited phone call Friday night as he returned from his squad's game at McBee. "I talked with him after they won, since he called me early in the morning as I was returning home," Hinson said. "Hugh was so proud of his guys and he was tickled for them that they won, since they were underdogs in the game. "He was excited, and it was a nervous type of excitement, with him giving me some play-by-play descriptions of the game," he said. "But away from the game of football, he was the type of person who would give you the shirt off his back. It's going to be a tough time realizing he is gone." Hinson mentioned that he and Watson ended their telephone discussion Saturday morning with tentative plans to meet and talk about football this weekend. That meeting won't take place, but Hinson said he believes that Watson was at a place in his life he was pleased with. "He always wanted to be a head coach and he was going to be a good one. He went out on top, no matter which way you look at it," he said. "It's just a tragedy. Everybody is in shock right now. He wanted the best for the Latta program. He graduated Dillon, but he was a Viking all the way. He got his chance to shine and he shined. "Hugh was a good friend to a lot of people and we need to keep his family in our prayers. Hugh was a great person who was just taking off in his life."

    3. As many of you know, Helen Moody has been graciously handling federal census lookups for us and she requested that the following note be posted. From Helen: "To all those requesting lookups. Please be specific in what you are expecting and where you want me to look. It would help if you would supply as much information as possible, i.e.. If not the date of birth at least a close guess. What township you would expect to find the family in. Knowing the race would help too. Also several have asked me my fee. I do not have a fee, I do this because I love genealogy and helping others as I have been helped in other places. If you would like to make a donation to The Dillon County Library and designate it for their genealogy section that would be great. They are just beginning to rebuild their genealogy section after a fire which destroyed everything a few years ago."

    1. [SCMARION-L] Still looking for Elisha Lewis
    2. Lisa Lasky
    3. I'm still trying to fill in the blanks on Elisha Lewis, son of William Lewis of Horry County. What I've been able to find to date is pretty limited. In his will, William Lewis left the following to his son Elisha Lewis: Eightly I Give & devise and Bequith unto my son Elisha Lewis one Negro Boy named Luke and one piece of land Lying on little Pee Dee in Marion District and state afore said Containing two hundred and twenty five acres Be the Same more or less lying Between the above land given to Joel Lewis and James Lewis line and one heifer to him and his heirs for ever I think this is the same land referred to in the land records as being purchased by William T. Lewis from Jonathan Lewis. It appears Elisha sold it to Jonathan, but I haven't found a record of the transaction. The last mention I have of Elisha in is 1916 when he witnessed the sale of property by James Lewis to Isaac Lewis. He seems to have disappeared into a black hole. He did have land, but whether it extended beyond the land sold to Jonathan Lewis, I'm not sure. I can't find any trace of a probate record. Francine sent me the following information from the Mary Lewis Stephenson book about Elisha: He is listed 4 times. First as a son of William and Morning Van Pelt Lewis. She did not know his birthdate. Second, she states that Sellers erred in omitting Elisha and Sally as children. Third, quoting from William Lewis' will as given in the book, "Eightly I Give & devise & Bequith unto my son Elisha Lewis one Negro Boy named Luke and one piece of land Lying on Little Pee Dee in Marion Distrect and state afore said Containing two hundred and twenty-five acres Be the Same more of lefs lying between the above land given to Joel Lewis and James Lewis line and one heifer to him & his heirs for ever --- " Lastly is her paragraph on " ELISHA LEWIS Elisha Lewis lost the sight of both eyes before reaching maturity and died unmarried. He signed a receipt Sept. 19, 1811, reading: 'Rec'd of the executors of William Lewis, dec'd, one negro boy named Luke and one three-year-old hiefer and two hundred and fifty acres of land.' " The SENCLewis.com website has the following information: Isaac James Lewis F 423 1817 200 acres $400 Sold 4/19/1816, witnessed by Elisha Lewis and Benjamin Lewis William T. Jonathan Lewis S 236 1843 220 acres $400 Originally owned by William Lewis, bequeathed to his son Elisha, then sold to Johathan Lewis The Georgia Passport records list an Elisha Lewis from Craven County as applying for a passport (along with a family from Marion County) for himself and his family. I am pretty sure this isn't the same Elisha. I'm hitting a complete brick wall here. He doesn't show up on census records after 1810, and the last mention is 1816. Most likely he died after witnessing the land transaction in 1816 and before the census was taken in 1820, but I'm not sure. As far as I can determine he didn't have any descendents but I'd like to be sure if possible. Does anyone have any more information on Elisha? Thanks for your help. --Lisa ============================================================ A few still left -- 16 x 20 prints of charcoal drawings done by the artist John Moll, commissioned in the late 1960's.
