I am attempting to transcribe some of the census records for posting on the Marion County web page. So many of the names are either too faded to read or difficult to figure out what all the letters are. But the ones that really frustrate me are the ones the enumerator or someone wrote something else over the names. I have a Selllers, first name looks like Price. Age 39, lawyer, in Manning Township. Wife Mary Sue, children A. Leona, J. DuBois, P. Bruce, Mildred E. and W. Maynard. Also listed in the same household Meta A DuBois S-in-law. Can someone help me out with the first name of the head of the house hold. Then I have one that looks like C. Hervert, with wife Ruth. Any suggestions as to what this name could be. Helen

Sandy, the 1850 census says she was 40 (?) and listed Jesse as 30 (?). The 1840 census Marion Co., shows him bet. 30 & 40 and her bet. 20 & 30. I am guessing that they were born around 1810. I do not have right at hand the list of Spiveys that were in the area at the 1810 census. Will look that up. Thanks. Roger.

It certainly shows that Mary Jane Horn could not have been married to this R.R. Rogers in 1880, when she disappeared from sight in the census records. She may be destined to remain a mystery. Roger, In transcribing some of the 1840 census pages I had photocopied and put in my notebook long ago, I noticed a Jesse Sparkman. You mentioned you found "your" Jesse Sparkman in Robeson in 1850 so thought you might be interested in this one from the Marion County federal census, 1840: Sparkman Jesse Free white males 0 under five 1 age 5 and under 10 0 age 10-15 0 age 15-20 0 age 20-30 1 age 30-40 0 for all other age groups (up to age 100) Free white females 0 under five 1 age 5 and under 10 0 age 10-15 0 age 15-20 1 age 20-30 0 for all other age groups (up to age 100) The photocopy page includes only the first four columns of "Free colored males" and there is no information entered in those columns for Jesse Sparkman's household. The household enumerated just before Jesse Sparkman was that of Evan Scott, and, of course why wouldn't it be, the Sparkman household was the last one on the page. I don't have the census page number or post office info, but it must be for the area known as Hillsboro Township-- there are Gaddys, Goodyears, and Hays on the same page, which lists some 30 households. (Elizabeth Hays, living by herself and age 60-70 is also on this page.) Cheers, Victoria

Roger, Can you give an estimate as to the year of birth for Mary "Polly" Spivey? My husband is a Spivey. His great-grandfather Levi Monroe had a sister named Mary born May 11, 1842. I don't know who she married if she did. Source used for this information was "Jesse Spivey" Family Bible. Let me know if you think this might be your line, Sandy P. Spivey
My great aunt Frances Morgan Rogers (husband Robert Calvin Rogers d.1908) had children that I have been unable to find. The one that has bothered me was son who was listed as "Boss" Rogers. May have to wait until the 1930 census comes out next year. Also, a dau. Lelia who married an Enzor. This family was listed in the Robeson Co. census in 1880 and Columbus Co. later can't find my 1920 census on them. Please help. Roger Morgan.
Since I have hit a stone wall on finding my William Morgan who married Mary Ann Dubose I am going to try and find other grgrgrandparents. My grgrandpa K. T. Morgan married Dolly Sparkman. Found Jesse Sparkman in 1850 US census for S. Div. of Robeson Co., NC. On my grgrandma Dolly Sparkman Morgan's death cert. it indicated that her mother was Polly Spivey Sparkman. Want to find the Spivey line that Mary "Polly" Sparkman descended from. Also, ancestors of Jesse Sparkman. Any hints and help will be greatly appreciated. Both families are along the NC/SC state line. Marion, Horry, Robeson & Columbus Co. Roger Morgan.
