    2. In reply to Johnny Johnson: Thank you so much for posting the information on William E. Miller, his family and Bible record. I have the notation "unknown" beside William E. in my Miller records. This certainly helps to sort out those Millers a little bit. I had often wondered who he was. Does the Bible record state that he was born near Wilmington, NC, or is that a result of your research? It would seem that his wife Catherine Brown was part of the Brown family that resided generally between Mullins and Marion. There is a Brown family cemetery just a little SE of the town of Marion. You might want to check "101 Cemeteries of Marion County" to see if any of these individuals were buried there. Being a school teacher gives some indication of why his children were born at various places around the county. You might want to consult a copy of "Marion District School Record [1849-1864]" compiled by Margaret B. Altman and published by Three Rivers. There are dozens of entries for William E. and W.E. Miller and one for William Edwin Miller - far too many for me to mention them all here. They generally show him teaching schools located in Marion Couthouse Beat. One entry shows him teaching at a school in or near Centenary. Since the book contains no records earlier than 1849, there is no reference to him teaching at Spring Branch or on Maidendown. by 1850, as the census indicates, he was teaching at a school near Marion. I don't have any information on the others you mention. You might like to check Marty Grant's website for clues regarding the Collins and Porter connections. The Ford children in the 1870 census appear to have been members of the Ford family from the Lake View area. Perhaps they were boarding with Miller, maybe going to school in Marion? Other members of the list might like to note that William E. Miller taught many of our ancestors. The School Records give many names of children he taught, along with their parents' names in many cases. Jo Church Dickerson

    3. I posted a message earlier asking for some help identifying names written in a family Bible. I also asked for help identifying some locations. Jo Church Dickerson was kind enough to respond with a geography lesson. I also received another e-mail about the Porters mentioned in my post. I hit my "delete" button instead of my "keep" button on my e-mail program and deleted the Porter response. Please send me the e-mail again. The Rachael Susan and James Porter in your e-mail are the same ones that are mentioned in my e-mail. Please e-mail me directly so we can exchange information. I am looking forward to corresponding with you. The Bible belonged to William Edwin Miller, born April 2, 1813 near Wilmington, NC. His parents were William B. Miller and Narcipa (Narcisa?) Hatch. He moved to Marion County, SC, married Catharine Brown on June 25, 1844. Catharine Brown was the daughter of Richard and Lilly Brown of Marion County. Catharine was born July 2, 1825. The first death recorded in the Bible record was "Lilly Brown wife of Richard Brown .January 14, 1846." The 1850 census listed William E. Miller and family in house 677, Marion County. William's occupation was school teacher. Also listed in the 1850 census along with wife Catharine (this is the way the name was spelled in the Bible), were Casindona and Roxana. The Bible record listed the children that would have been included in the 1850 census as: Rowenna Gregg (Miller), born on Willow Creek August 14, 1845 Cassandana Roxana (Miller), born July 30, 1848 (on Maiden-down) Another daughter, Catherine Brown Miller was also born and died on January 30, 1848, on Maiden-down. The family was probably staying in the Big Reedy Creek area at the time the census was taken on 11 September 1850, because a third daughter, Josephine Virginia Miller was born "on big Reedy Creek" October 14, 1850. The 1860 census listed William E. Miller and family in house 2119. He was still a school teacher. Along with wife, Catharine, were children Rowina, Roxana, Josephine, and Haywood. The Bible record listed the birth of the first son, "Mauger Naywood (Haywood?) born on Little Reedy Creek, August 27, 1853. Three deaths were recorded during the 1860s. "Mary Griffin was struck by lightning Saturday July 28, 1860. Elizabeth Collins departed this life May 20, 1861. Richard Brown departed this life at his residence by the small pox Sunday night 11 o'clock July 21st 1864 after an illness of four days. Mr. Richard Brown funeral was preached at the grave yard near his dwelling by Mr. Bullock on Sunday morning September 25, 1864." Mary Griffin and Elizabeth Collins are not otherwise identified. Only their deaths are recorded. I do not know if they are daughters of William and Catharine Miller. The 1870 census listed William E. Miller in house 94, Marion Twp, Marion County, SC. His occupation was listed as "trial justice". Living in the house were daughters Roxanah, Josephine, and Ella. Also, a son, Magor, was living at home. Also in the house were Rachael Foxworth, age 50; Elizabeth Ford, age 16; Elias Ford, age 11; and Isaac Ford, age 10. Catharine Brown Miller had died Sunday, April 17, 1870. A son, William Edwin Miller, March 19, 1870. This son is not listed on the census and Catharine, his mother, died a month later. There could have been complications and the child probably died. Also, prior to the 1870 census, Ellen (or Eller) Victoria Miller was born August 19, 1866. The Bible recorded the marriage of William E. Miller to Miss Rachael Susan (Porter) daughter of James C. Porter of Marion County. They were married August 24, 1871. The first child of William and Rachael Susan Miller was born Little Cauhan (or Cauben) Miller, born May 3, 1872. The death of James C. Porter was noted November 4, 1878. One other note in the Bible was about the birth of a grandchild. The oldest daughter, Rowenna Gregg Miller, had married a Ferny (?) Hammond. The birth of their son, William Edwin Hammond, was August ??, 1871. I am interested in learning more about the above families. Please post to the list or e-mail me directly. Thanks, Johnny Johnson

    1. [SCMARION-L] Re: Father of James Price
    2. For what it is worth: I don't have any concrete information on the David Price who has been under discussion on the list recently. That is the problem. I've never seen ANY information about any David Price in connection with the Price family of lower Robeson and Marion Counties. David's name does not appear in the local Price deeds (Robeson nor Marion) or other documents connected to the Price family. While seeking information that would confirm or eliminate any David Price from consideration, it would be well to keep in mind that Robeson was/is a very large county. The northern part of Robeson that bounded on Cumberland County was cut off to make Hoke County. There were families in the northern part of Robeson that had no connection whatever to families near the South Carolina / Marion County border. Of course, there were a few who did. 1. [SCMARION-L] Re: Fwd: Miller, Porter, Hammond, Brown
    2. Johnny Johnson recently posted a query (via Victoria) asking about the above families, and about several waterways. I don't have any specific information about the families, but here are general locations of the waterways. Willow Creek is located in what is now Florence County, west of Great Pee Dee River. It is south of Hwy 76/301, and runs near or is a tributary of Jeffries Creek, not far from the confluence of Jeffries with the river. The Brown family historically had lands somewhere in that area. Big Reedy Creek There are two sets of Big and Little Reedy Creeks. One set rises in Marlboro County, and runs SE into present day Dillon County. The confluence of these Big and Little Reedy Creeks near the town of Latta is the head of Buck Swamp. The other set of Reedy Creeks rise just SW of Mullins, near the Sister Bays, and flow generally southeast across the lands between Mullins and Ariels Crossroads, and from there on down till they join each other just before their confluence with Little Pee Dee River, near Centenary. The Brown family also had lands not far from the headwaters of the lower (Marion County) Reedy Creeks. There is a Brown Swamp that flows just to the west of Mullins. Maiden Down is a Carolina Bay and a stream - Maiden Down Swamp - that rises in the bay. The bay is huge, stretching from just south of Hwy 41A between Fork and Marion, down to just west of the town of Mullins, more or less behind the new high school. Maidendown Swamp rises in the southern part of the bay, flows south out of the bay, then running in twists and turns northeastward, just west of the town of Mullins, until it joins Buck Swamp just to the north of Mullins near the junction of Hwy 41 and 917. Spring Branch is not as familiar to me as the others. It flows past old Spring Branch School, which is just off Hwy 501 north of town of Marion. I believe the Porter family was associated in some way with this area, based on deeds I have seen. I believe there is also a Spring Branch Bay. Many of these waterways can be located on online maps such as topozone.com and even mapquest.com. Just plug in Mullins or Marion or whatever, then enlarge (zoom in) till the waterways appear with their names. I would love to have more information on the William Miller born in 1825 who married Cathrine Brown in 1844. Jo Church Dickerson
