    1. Re: [SCMARION-L] Old versions of Family Tree Maker

    3. I have used FTM almost since it came on the market, and I have never heard of nor have I read anything about "DSS Spyware Agents". FTM is not just genealogy software but is a genealogy research system. It is extremely powerful in it's search and report-making capabilities. It is the only program that I am aware of that will enable the use to search the entire internet without leaving the program. Any you won't download a virus from FTM or any other name brand product. They go to extreme measures to eliminate any possibility of viruses from their web pages and files. The newer versions of FTM have improved the merge capability and added many features (some of which are better than others), but no SpyWare. Bill On Sun, 4 Nov 2001, John Johnson wrote: > List, > Many of you use Family Tree Maker. Some of you are probably aware of a DSS Agent that loads into your registry when you use the Family Tree Maker software. This thing is called "spyware" by the computer geeks. This is a Learning Company thing. Family Tree Maker is no longer owned by The Learning Co/Boderbund/Mattel or whatever. So, the newest versions of FTM do not have this agent. If you own the latest version of FTM, I think it is 9.0, then I'm told that you do not have this DSS Agent. > It appears that this spyware DSS Agent is loaded onto all of The Learning Company software and it allows Boderbund/The Learning Co. to have a link with your computer. I don't know much about how this agent works or whether any personal or sensitive information is accessed by Boderbund. I don't like such things being loaded onto my computer without my consent or knowlege, even though I supposedly agreed to it when I loaded the FTM software on my computer. > I have FTM 7.0 and everytime I load my FTM program, this DSS Agent loads into my registry. I have been trying to permanently delete it but haven't been successful. I downloaded a patch from the Mattel/Learning Co. web site that was supposed to help me delete this agent but that patch didn't work. Also, while downloading the patch from The Learning Co. web page, I downloaded the NIMDA virus. > You can download a free software called Ad-Aware from Lavasoft that will tell you if you have this DSS Agent or any other spy or ad products. You can upgrade to the latest version of FTM and will not have this agent in your computer. There are supposed to be ways to delete the thing but I haven't figured out how to do it yet other than delete FTM or upgrade the FTM program. > If anyone knows anything more about this than I've posted here, or if I have any of this wrong, please let me know. > JJohnson > > > ==== SCMARION Mailing List ==== > Tombstone Inscription Project - South Carolina > http://www.rootsweb.com/~cemetery/s-car.html >

    3. I have some info on people with your surnames, except Church, Carmichael, and Elvington. They are mostly not my main lines, except Hyatt and Harrelson. I am also not sure which were in Marion Co., SC. I switched software databases and I have not figured out how to get it to tell me which people are from which counties, yet. I am using FTMaker. Do you know how to do that in that program? Anyway, I know Hyatt and Harrelson are in Marion Co., SC, but I just do not have much on them, yet. If you think I can help, please let me know. I would sure like to take you up on that offer. Sorry our surnames don't coincide, at least on the surface. Please post your answer on the list, or write me directly to let me know if you have time to search for deeds taken from SC abstracts.. Be glad to pay for copying and postage. Know your research takes precedence, but finding my g-g-father's lineage has become almost a crusade with me. I'm hoping the key in unlocking the door to the John CRAWFORD's in that area might lie in one of those deeds. Or at least, it will help decide if my particular CRAWFORD is not a descendant of that particular line. Everyone on this list knows the name of my ancestor, Mahalaleel/Mahaleal CRAWFORD, and have helped me find abstracts of probates which gives very convincing evidence to support his being s/o one James CRAWFORD who died before 1804, widow Mary. His name does appear on records in Marion Co on certain records, given name usually s little differently, but also the Bibical spelling as well.. Thanks for your offter to the list. If you need any help in AL & FL census I will look for you when I go to the Jax Lib,. They have Soundex & census for most Southern States. KNow you will enjoy this list. They are fantastic & so helpful! Good luck in your searches, Winkie CRAWFORD R Winkie@aol.com

    3. I am finding that several of my lines lived so close to the border of Marion and Marlboro, it is hard to tell where they lived from one year to the next. My Bundys and Littles were on the Marion Census in 1870 & 1880. It was listed as Bethea Township, Selkirk Postoffice. I have guessed that this area is now part of Dillon County. I have been trying to find the parents of my Daniel Little and the parents of his wife, Mary Ann Medlin. They were listed on the Marion Census of 1880. Little, Daniel W M 62 farming SC NC NC Mary A. W F 63 KH NC NC NC John R. W M 42 Attends farm Mary J. Medlin W F 15 niece The above ages of this couple would indicate that he, at least, was born in SC ca. 1818. The John R. Little, age 42, was a Methodist minister, and probably performed several early Marion marrriages. He married Ella Berry in 1889. I have just finished reading "THE CAROLINA BACKCOUNTRY ON THE EVE OF THE REVOLUTION , The Journal and Other Writings of Charles Woodmason, Anglican Itinerant.". His name was so often mentioned in Suzanne LInder's new book, "Anglican Churches of Colonial South Carolina", I decided I wanted to know more about this man. He constantly complains about the conditions he has to live in in the backcountry , and the way things are run by the govenment. He says, "And on his head may be remarked one great defect of things here--Understand then, that Jurors are drawn by Ballot three months previous to the Sessions-- and their names are publickly known (both Grand and Petit Jurors) where from a Man may bribe a Jury at his Will." He also says, "Court Houses and Goals at six different Places are built--but not one House of Correction, as yet, in the Province--tho' most notoriously necessary, and loudly called for--but "Idleness", is the Endemic Distemper of this Clime." HIs journals cover the years of 1766, 1767, & 1768. He was originally from England, then a planter in the Parish of Prince Frederick Winyaw, SC , and decided to go back to England and study to be a minister. For genealogist interested in some background of the early state, this is wonderful reading. Joanne Harley NC harleyclan@coastalnet.com
