Could it be Marion C. G. Avant, born ca 1831, son of Ira Avant and Ann B. ---? Col. Maxcy Gregg was authorized to raise a regiment of 6 month volunteers. The Marion men served under a Captain Stanley in Charleston until after the fall of Ft. Sumter. I began work on this just last night and have not had time to delve in to regimental histories yet. I had looked at the names you list on that website but I have no way to connect any of them to the author of the letter without seeing the actual service record. I was hoping to identify him through some of the relatives he mentions in his letter. I have located several of them thru census records but have not connected the dots. Thanks so much for your help!!!!!!! Kevin Lassen
I am researching a letter written from Charleston, SC Feb. 22, 1861. The letter mentions Marion and wanting to get back home to Marion. He also mentions the Marion Volunteers who have enlisted for six months and are waiting to attack Ft. Sumter. I believe the writer's unit to be Co. E of Gregg's 1st Battalion. The friends and family that are mentioned are: Mrs. Martha E. Rowell, Miss Betsy Odom who is engaged to Mr. Sam Shaw, Miss Sally Odom who is engaged to Mr. Sam Wall, "old cousin" Tommy Shaw and cousin Becky, Baker Wiggins, John D. Shaw, Cage Wiggins, "little" Tommy Shaw, & Henry Shaw. The signature appears to be M.C.C. Avant but I am not positive. I have found several of these people in the 1860 census. The Odom girls reside with an Avant and there are Wiggins and Shaws in close proximity. I have not found anything that could be a match for the writer except an M.G. Avant. Does anyone have any of these names in their Marion County research? Thanks! Kevin Lassen
Hi Betty, I responded to your e-mail with the info below, but don't know if it made it to the site or not. Cathy Hi Betty Jo, There are 2 William Price's it could possibly be. William Price, son of Hepsey Price shows in 1850 census as age 14. And William Price son of Henry Price and Catherine Lewis Price, age 17 in 1860 census. If you get any of those Prices all sorted out, please let me know!! Cathy

Allen, Your post just came today. There iwas a cemetery survey done of the cemeteries in Marlboro County. Elizabeth Drake & Jacquelyn Rainwater published it in 1970. Unfortunately they did not include an index. If you can give me the names of the cemeteries in the particular area you are looking I will see if I can find your Hunt ancestor. I received them on my end. side note is anyone doing cemetaries in Marlboro? I am really interested in Hunt's Bluff(Red Hill / Westfield Bluff) area. Suppose Hunt family lived there and there is a grave with a Creswell Hunt. I am trying to find out if his name was Christopher Creswell Hunt. url below ends with 735 http://geonames.usgs.gov/pls/gnispublic/f?p=140:3:9566697963829843725::NO ::P3_FID:1232735 Allen -------------- Original message ---------------------- From: [email protected] > Dear List, > I have posted a couple queries to the list and have not seen them posted. > Has anyone else had problems? > Peggy > > > ==== SCMARION Mailing List ==== > To contact the list administrator send an email to: > [email protected] > ==== SCMARION Mailing List ==== South Carolina newspapers, magazines, TV, Radio: http://www.usnpl.com/scnews.html
Hi All, Seems AOL has finally started to deliver the mail. Yes, I am the one who posted the Price pictures. Betty Jo, please contact me again. My NEW E-MAIL [email protected]_ (mailto:[email protected]) Peggy Price
I would believe this location of Creswell Hunt on Hunt's Bluff is a private location. He would have been involved in the Hunt's Buff Rev War event. Hunt's Bluff is rather old location I believe I seen document stating as far back to 1735. At this time I do not believe my Hunt line would have been the founder of this location. There is a book that states Murphee left Robeson County in 1790 along with Hunt family to the Hunt's Bluff area of Marlboro. Lydia Hunt deed trust is located in Marion District dated 1854 and she died in 1856. [email protected] wrote: > Allen, > Your post just came today.
