GEORGETOWN | Herbert ''Chick'' Cribb, 70, died Saturday, April 8, 2006 at his residence. Mr. Cribb was born July 13, 1935 in Georgetown County, a son of the late Davis Stole Cribb and Mary Ethel Powells Cribb Jones. He was a retired painter. He was a member of Daybreak Community Church and the Senior Adult Sunday School Class. Surviving are his wife, Barbara McConnell Cribb; two daughters, Tina C. Vause and husband, Steve, and Tammy C. Fullwood and her husband, Scott, all of Georgetown; two grandchildren, Steve A. Vause Jr., and Tiffany R. Vause; two brothers, Marion Cribb of Socastee and Murl Cribb of Jacksonville, Fla.; one sister, Viola Gibson of Mullins and a number of nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by an infant brother, David Cribb; and two sisters, Lila Mae Bordeaux and Helen Haselden. NICHOLS | Sundy Hayes Anderson, 51, died Sunday, April 9, 2006 at her home, on Highway 9 in Nichols. She was the daughter of Ella Mae W. Hayes of Latta and the late Jessie C. Hayes. Survivors, in addition to her mother, include her husband, Danny Anderson and one daughter, Dana Elizabeth Anderson of Nichols; three sisters, Pam McKay and her husband, Frank, of Hamlet, N.C., Shirley Ethridge and her husband, Jerry, of Hamlet, N.C., and Connie George and her husband, David, of Florence; four nieces and eight nephews. MULLINS — Mrs. Lucy Elizabeth Rogers Tucker, “Betty Blue,” 72, widow of Oliver Glen Tucker, Sr., after suffering a long illness, went to be with the Lord on April 8, 2006. Daughter of Mildred Wiggins Meares, the granddaughter of Annabelle and Pearly Wiggins of Mullins, she was born August 4, 1933, in Mullins. She graduated from Mullins High School in 1952, where she captained the State Championship Girls Basketball Team. Owner of Betty’s Flowers and a member of Mullins Presbyterian Church, she was actively involved in the VFW Auxillary, Manna House Ministries, Mullins Clothes Closet and various local churches. Survivors include: her children, Oliver Glen Tucker, Jr. and his wife Dale of Florence and their children, Oliver Glen “Troy” Tucker, III and Dresden Elizabeth; Katherine Elizabeth Tucker Ganey and her husband Rev. George Francis Ganey, III (pastor of Smyrna Presbyterian Church) of Smyrna, Ga. and their children, Ashley Elizabeth, Lesley Susanna and Caroline Grace; and Stephen Craig Tucker of the home and his children, Joshua Steven, Jacob Corben and Haley Alexa and their mother, Melia Berry; a sister, Jean W. Cox of Augusta, Ga.; and a sister-in-law, Mrs. James D. (Tanya) Tucker of Mullins. CANTONMENT, Fla. | Corine J. Lewis, 69, passed away on Thursday, April 6, 2006 in Loris. Mrs. Lewis was born on July 5, 1936 in Mullins, to Ebb and Corine Goff Johnson. She moved to Pensacola in 1959 with her husband and son, where she retired after 31 years of service from Monsanto in August 1991. She was full of life, made many friends and will truly be missed by all of her friends and family. She is preceded in death by four brothers and three sisters. She is survived by her husband of 52 years, Donnie A. Lewis of Cantonment, FL; one son, Ricky V. Lewis and wife, Vickie, of Crestview, Fla.; three grandchildren, Nicholas, Nicole and Christopher; one great-granddaughter, Katelyn; four brothers, Joseph F. Johnson of Loris, Dale Johnson of Winter Haven, Fla., Brooks Johnson of Galivants Ferry, and Randall Johnson of Nichols; three sisters, Shelby J. Herring of Nichols, Shirley J. MARION — Dr. James Arthur Blake Sr., educator, entered into eternal rest Wednesday, April 5, 2006, at McLeod Regional Medical Center in Florence. James, the fourth child of Frank Blake Sr. and Willie Mae Montgomery Blake (both deceased) was born in Marion on Aug. 2, 1930. At an early age, he embraced the teachings of Christ and became a member of Saint John AME Church in Marion. James was educated in the public school system of Marion County and graduated valedictorian from Marion County Training School (later Johnakin High School) in 1947. He attended undergraduate school at Allen University in Columbia, graduating in 1951 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in chemistry with a minor in mathematics. He served in the United States Air Force for a period of four years, attaining the rank of staff sergeant. He was an Air Force instructor and received recognition as Instructor of the Month and Airman of the Quarter. While stationed in California, Blake took advantage of some course work from San Jose State College. Upon discharge from the Air Force in 1955, Blake began his public school teaching career at Finklea High School in Loris as a teacher of chemistry and mathematics. After two years in that position, he came to Marion and taught college preparatory mathematics and served as chairman of the mathematics department at Johnakin High School. One year prior to the schools becoming a unitary school system in Marion District 1, Blake taught college preparatory mathematics at Marion High School and remained in that position until 1974, when the new Marion High School was completed. He became associate principal at the new high school and remained in that position until 1979, when he was named assistant superintendent/mathematics supervisor, until his retirement in 1988. Blake began work on his graduate degree at North Carolina Central in Durham, N.C., and received his Master of Science degree from South Carolina State College (South Carolina State University) in 1961. He had done additional study at George Peabody College in Nashville, Florida State University in Tallahassee and the University of South Carolina in Columbia. In 1970, Blake was appointed to the South Carolina State Board of Education, being the first black appointed to that position in South Carolina. He served on the board for six years, becoming the first black chairman of the board in 1974. In his position of chairman of the board, Blakes signature appeared on the South Carolina State high school diploma of every high school student graduating from the public school system in 1974, and on the South Carolina teacher certificate of every teacher certified in South Carolina in 1974. The former Rita Bridgewater of Berkeley, Calif., who became his life partner and soul mate emerged as the center of his attention 51 years ago. He took unto himself his wife and friend, with whom he shared the joys of a loving family and home. They are the proud parents of five children, Karen, James Jr., Albert, William and Kevin. His parents and a brother, Frank Blake, preceded him in death. James leaves to mourn his precious memories his devoted wife, Rita Elizabeth Bridgewater; five loving children, Karen, James Jr. (Gail) of Rock Hill, Albert, William (Diane) of Mullins and Kevin. The apple of Dr. Blakes eyes are is grandchildren, James A. Blake III, Preston Tyler Blake and Shakyra Wortham; two sisters, Mrs. Eliza Blake Nelson and Mrs. Louis Blake Conner; three sisters-in-law, Mrs. Mary Blake of New Jersey, Doris Thompson and Ms. Barbara Bridgewater, both of Berkeley, Calif.; a brother-in-law, Mr. Albert Bridgewater of Virginia; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Funeral services for Dr. James Arthur Blake Sr. will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, April 9, from the Johnakin Middle School, 500 Gurley St., Marion. Burial will follow in the Devotion Gardens Cemetery, U.S. 76, Marion, directed by Davis Funeral Service of Marion. Wake services will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the St. John AME Church, Mill Street, Marion.
MULLINS — Mr. Johnny Harold Lewis, 72, husband of Betty Mac Lewis, and a wonderful father, died Thursday, April 6, 2006, at his home after an illness. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at Rains Freewill Baptist Church, with Rev. Tony Miles officiating. Burial will follow in Red Hill Memorial Gardens Cemetery, directed by Cox-Collins Funeral Home. Mr. Lewis was born August 22, 1933, in Fairmont, N.C., a son of the late John Berter Lewis and the late Rosa Anna Ivey Lewis. He was a masonry contractor. Mr. Lewis, a faithful Christian, was a member of Rains Freewill Baptist Church, where he served as Deacon. Surviving Mr. Lewis in addition to his wife of the home are his children, Gail Lewis Huggins and her husband, Richard, of Galivants Ferry, Johnny L. Lewis of Mullins, Michael Lewis and his wife, Diana, of Mullins, Misty Lewis Hucks and her husband, Shane, of Mullins and Mark Lewis and his wife, Sheila, of Mullins; his grandchildren, Kenny Huggins, Wesley Huggins, Kim miles, Hannah Lewis, Michael Brandon Lewis, Samuel Blake Lewis, Joshua Storm Lewis, Kassie Lewis, Matthew Harrelson, Haley Lewis and Sydney Lewis; his great-grandchildren, Colby Huggins, Taylor Miles, Mallory Huggins, Landon Miles, Jonathon Huggins and Breanna Lewis; and a sister, Nellie Lupo of Fairmont, N.C. Visitation will be held Saturday evening from 7 till 9 p.m. at Cox-Collins Funeral Home.
MYRTLE BEACH | Frederick Louis Horinbein, 82, died Wednesday, April 5, 2006 at his home. He was born Nov. 28, 1923 in Marion, a son of the late Israel Benjamin and Ida Shore Horinbein. Mr. Horinbein graduated from Marion High School and the Citadel. He was the former owner of the Horinbein Agency in Marion and was owner of Southlantic Water Systems. Mr. Horinbein was an active member and former treasurer of the board of deacons of Glenns Bay Baptist Church. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. Surviving are his wife of 57 years, Doris Spivey Horinbein; a son, Larry B. Horinbein and wife, Patricia, of Myrtle Beach; three daughters, Linda Toporek of Mt. Pleasant, Gale Horinbein of Summerville and Patrice Landrum of Little River; his eight grandchildren, Frederick, Sarah, Candace, Kelly, Alex, Emily, Jeremy and Brittney; and his three great-grandchildren, Ruby, Tribe and Ava. A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. on Saturday, April 8, 2006 at Glenns Bay Baptist Church, with Pastor Bob Teems officiating. MULLINS — Mr. Michael Dean Rising, 57, husband of Sallie Maree Christmas Rising, died Wednesday, April 5, 2006, at his home after an illness. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 8, at the chapel of Cox-Collins Funeral Home with Rev. Kevin Garris officiating. Burial, with full military honors, will follow in Cedardale Cemetery. Mr. Rising was born October 27, 1948, in Dillon, a son of the late Luther Rising, Jr. and the late Mable Dean Hayes Rising. He retired from the S.C. National Guard after 18 years of service. He had also served four years in the U.S. Navy. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. Mr. Rising was a graduate of Dillon High School and Coker College. He was a member of Dillon Baptist Church. Surviving Mr. Rising, in addition to his wife of the home, are a daughter, Jordana R. Martin and her husband, Joe, of Mullins; and a brother, Luther Rising of Columbia. Visitation will be held Friday evening from 7 til 9 p.m. at Cox-Collins Funeral Home.
MARION — Mr. Wayne Collins, 59, died Wednesday, April 5, 2006, at McLeod Hospice House in Florence after an illness. Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, April 7, in Tabernacle Cemetery. The services will be directed by Smith-Collins Funeral Home. Wayne was born Jan. 8, 1947, in Marion. He was a son of the late Bascom and Betty Clark Collins. Surviving Wayne are two sisters, Gale Vangorder of Marion and Sarah White and her husband, Howell, of Marion; and two brothers, Henry Collins and his wife, Judy, of Marion and J.T. Collins and his wife, Margaret, of Marion. Wayne was predeceased by two brothers, Wade Collins and Lide Collins. Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Smith-Collins Funeral Home.

Mrs. Johnson was born in Mullins, a daughter of the late Ebb and Cornie Goff Johnson. Mrs. Johnson was a homemaker and member of Happy Home Baptist Church, where she had taught childrens classes and was involved for more than 50 years with WMU. Mrs. Johnson was predeceased by her stepmother, Belle Jones Johnson; four brothers, Major M. Johnson, Leon M. Johnson, Ebb Johnson Jr. and Lester Johnson; and two sisters, Mary J. Johnson and Lorine J. Evans. Surviving are four sons, James M. Johnson and his wife, Vera, of Florence, Kenneth E. Johnson and his wife, Jean, of Conway, David O. Johnson and his wife, Gail, of Mt. CONWAY | Mr. George Richardson entered into eternal rest on Saturday, April 1, 2006. Born Mar. 7, 1936 in Marion County, he was the son of Watkin and Ethel Richardson. He was an educator, businessman and administrator for many years. He served as Pres. of Horry County Black Caucus, Unit and Iota Lambda Sigma chapter of Phi Beta Sigma fraternity. He also served on the Forestry and Zoning Appeals Comm. for Horry County, the Horry County Solid Waste Authority Board and the CRPTA-Wacc. Reg. Trans. Authority Board, known as LYMO. MULLINS | J.C. Richardson, 72, died unexpectedly Wednesday, Mar. 29, 2006 at Marion County Medical Center. He was the son of the late Jessie C. and Gussie Capps Richardson. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mildred Richardson and one brother, J.M. Richardson. Mr. Richardson was hired as city administrator Oct. 13, 1995, he was previously code enforcement officer for Mullins. He considered it an honor and a privilege to be selected to represent the city of Mullins. His philosophy was to work with city council to accomplish their goals for Mullins, in order for businesses to increase in economic stability and support the quality of living for its residents. Mr. Richardson is survived by one son, Stewart ''Rusty'' Richardson and his wife, Susan, of Mullins; one daughter, Karen R. Griffin and her husband, Stuart, of Conway; one brother, N. Leighton Richardson and his wife, Mary Alice, of Kenly, N.C.; four sisters, Venia Brown of Johnsonville, Gladys Wallace and husband, Tommy, of Florence, Esther Sawyer of Marion, and Ruth R. Brady and her husband, William, of Marion; five grandchildren, Paul R. Brown, Rebecca E. and S. Russ Richardson, and Lee and Elle Griffin; and one great-grandchild, Sally R. Brown.
