Dear List, I found this on another list. Just goes to show what can happen to a family name and why some have so many brick walls! Hope this is not offensive to anyone! Peggy Stockton Daily Independent Stockton, San Joaquin Co., CA >>FRIDAY, 15 FEB 1867<< BIRTH -- in this city, Feb. 11th, to the wife of J.C. HAYES, of a daughter. HOW NAMES ARE CHANGED -- A Scotchman named FEYSTON settled among the Germans in the western part of the State of New York. They translated his name by the sound into the German FEURSTEIN. On his return to an English neighborhood, his new acquaintances discovered FEURSTEIN in German means ENGLISH. They re-translated his name and the family became FLINT. One of the grandsons settled on the Arcadian coast of the Mississippi, and with the common fate of his family, his named of FLINT became translated by the French into PIERRE-A-FUSIL. His son went North, and the last transformation was a re-translation, and PIERRE-A-FUSIL's son became Peter GUN. **************Gas prices getting you down? For those who are interested I have made some changes on my web page. The index for obituaries and marriages are no longer on the Dillon Library's site with the email contact as dilloncountyobits@yahoo. I have move them all to Helen's Little Corner as it is easier for me to manage. I will continue to monitor the yahoo email in case someone still uses that contact. On the index for the Brides and Grooms (1903 -1929), from the Dillon Herald, I now have a link to the excerpt. It is no longer necessary to email me for further information unless you want a copy of the write-up from the microfilm. Then an email request will be required and an arrangement will be made. I am also slowly adding marriages from the Probate Judge's Office. If you have visited lately check it out. Happy Hunting. Helen -- Helen B. Moody Dillon County SC Library genealogy volunteer. COLUMBIA - Our mother, Joan McDonald Slaughter Quinn, died peacefully June 19, 2008, after a well-fought battle with pancreatic cancer. Born in Mullins, S.C., she was the second child and only daughter of Gertrude and Wilbur Slaughter. Upon graduation from Mullins High School, she moved to Columbia to attend Columbia College. She majored in early childhood education and following graduation, married Tim Quinn of Loris, S.C. She supported him through law school by teaching at Logan Elementary School. As their family grew, she stayed at home to raise their 5 children. In her later life, she embarked upon a career in retail, opening Angelic. Her proudest accomplishment during this time was the work that she and her dear friend, Kathy Davis, accomplished via their store, Angelic Works. She became an active participant in Children’s Chance, a charity dedicated to the needs of seriously ill children. Her final months were spent as the manager of the Providence Hospital gift shop, a position which allowed her to establish a number of very meaningful friendships. She was preceded in death by her mother, our “Nanny,” Gertrude McDonald Slaughter. She will be dearly missed by her father, Wilbur Slaughter of Columbia; her brother, Willis Slaughter and his wife, Pam, of Colonial Beach, Va., who provided such compassionate care for her throughout her illness; her children - Ty Quinn and his wife, Charmen, of Mount Pleasant, Ashley Quinn Drake and her husband, John, of Decatur, Ga., Allison Quinn Cooper and her husband, Timmy, of Murrell’s Inlet, Natalie Joan Quinn and her husband, Daniel Hall, of Columbia, and Bryan of Columbia.
