He soon settled in Laurens Co., South Carolina. January 6, 1773: William McMurty was listed among the persons who lately arrived from Ireland into this province [South Carolina] in the ship "Lord Dunluce" presented petitions for warrants of survey agreeable to their Respective Family Rights. William received 100 acres of land. Recorded in the Council Journal 37, page 15. 1795: William McMurtrey was the administrator of the estate of his father-in-law, Jonathan Puckett, de- ceased. July 19, 1797: William McMurtey Senr. and wife Mary sold to Richard Puckett Junr. for £5 sterling, 100 acres on Cane Creek part of a grant to Christopher Parsons. Witnesses: William McMurtrey Junr., Peter Smith and Doley Smith. Angus Campbell, J.P. [Laurens Co., South Carolina: Deed Book F, page 270]. [NOTE: On January 20, 1791, Mary Puckett purchased this land from Lucy Parsons for £10 {Laurens Co., South Carolina: Deed Book C, page 351}]. November 1, 1797: Richard Puckett and Mary McMurtrey sold to Robert Cuningham for £20, 40 acres. Witnesses: Moses Wells and Margaret Cuningham. Angus Campbell, J.P. [Laurens Co., South Carolina: Deed Book F, page 443]. Will of William McMurtrey: Laurens Co., South Carolina. February the 23rd day 1808. In the name of God Amen. Being weak in Body but in good memory and calling to mind that all Men Must yeald to Death when pleased god to Call them this my Last Will. All lawful Debts be first paid and I give unto my Daughter Jinney Brifon one Dollar. Second I give unto Susana Hall one Dollar. Thirdly Elizabeth McMurtrey McCluskey one Dollar and to my son William McMurtrey one Dollar and to my son Matthew McMurtrey one Dollar and I give to my son Cambel McMurtrey to have four Head of Horses three Cows & Calves & what household Belongs to Me and also all the plantation tools Belonging to Me Making the Reserve that my wife Marey McMurtrey is to have her living of the said Cambell McMurtrey while the Stay with him and Death a Mothers part by him the Cambell is to have Both barn & hadds with reserve that he pay Unto his brothers children. Betsey McMurtrey three dollars and to her sister Jinney three dollars and three lots of land that is due me next December two of them is Me! from my Son Mathew forty Dollars Each of them and of Nineteen Dollars Due from Andrew Bradley My Son Cambell is to have the Money of the above Mentioned Notes. I give my son Wm. My big coate and as my will that Cambell have two years Schooling and is my desire my son Mathew keep Cambell convenant to him if Pasable this I acknowledge to be my last will and testament and no other Revoking and anulling all will and wills hereafter by me made this only to be taken for my last will. It is my desire and will that my trusty friends David Greer and McSire Cast be Executors to this My Last Will Signed Sealed & Delivered in presence of John Monroe William [x] McMurtrey Mathew McMurtrey John League Proven in Court March 7, 1808.
