When I looked at the digitized microfilm record on Ancestry.com, I found, on the page of the Laurens County census with the original handwritten number 16, and later handwritten number 444, the following on the 6th line, left column: William McPherson 1 3 5 - - As Richard said, William is listed as the head of the household, which consisted of 1 free white male 16 or over, 3 free white males under 16, 5 free white females, no other free persons and no slaves.
