    3. Linda: Thank you for giving the list a heads up on the Daniel(s) letters. Normally, rootsweb frowns on using the lists to sell items to prevent subscribers and the rootsweb computers from being overwhelmed by spam. I hope it is obvious to all that family items with Laurens Co., SC connections that are up for auction on ebay or any online auction are a clear exception. Should any of you spot Laurens Co., SC bibles, letters, diaries, manuscripts, marriage licenses, ledgers, photographs for sale you are encouraged to give the list a heads up. Linda, it was very thoughtful of you to take the time to forward that information to the list. It will be nice if a Daniel(s) descendant acquires the letters. As a Civil War antique, they will go high. The hard, cold reality is that families lose touch with each other, and older people die leaving behind children and grandchildren who just do not care about old family items. With any luck those items end up in the hands of collectors or dealers instead of in the city dump. People do not think to donate to libraries because they do not expect any one else to value the items either. Dealers who buy old estates can not be expected to turn around and donate to libraries. Plus, our nation's libraries would be groaning under the weight of all that unwanted stuff. Then along comes ebay, and *poof* family items can find their way home on a good day. On a bad day, the bid goes too high, and they go to another collector or dealer. The problem is that dealers and genealogists do not think the same way. Genealogists want everything "shared" (free is always best, isn't it?) and dealers want top dollar. As long as genealogists understand that when they step into the antique world, they will have to compete for what they want--it works out okay. If you are lucky enough to find a family item, decide how much you are willing to pay. Ebay is the best thing that has happened to me. I've been able to buy about four family items. Two of them date to the 1810's. However, finding something on ebay takes a bit of wading, so when one of your stumbles upon something and takes the time to forward that information on to everyone else, you deserve a big thank you for being so altrustic. Frankly, when I spot something for my own Laurens Co., SC folks--you won't be hearing from me until the fur stops flying!!! :) Have fun with both your research and your journeys through ebay land. We live in interesting times. Kathy Duncan list owner
