    3. South Carolina did not require marriage licenses (nor record marriages) until well after 1900. They considered marriage an affair for the Church, not the State. Very few Church records have survived. You will probably have to do what the rest of us have, depend on relationships mentioned in wills, deeds, etc. to prove the marriage even happened and you may never know exactly when. Brent Holcomb (and perhaps others) have published some books of "implied" marriages that he took from other official records but I am not sure if there is one for Laurens.
