I have received Cherokee applications that state my GGGG grandfather was John Childers/Childress, not Abraham. Abraham and Douglas were listed as his brothers. John Childers was born abt 1765, prob. NC and married Nancy Duncan b. 1774, sister of John Duncan (Dunkin) of Laurens Co. John married Nancy in Laurens Co and most of their children were born there, according to CSA records, etc. He was listed on the 1800-1810 census for Laurens. He lived in Laurens and old Ninety-six. John died in the 1820's, as Nancy and her children had migrated to Mc Minn by 1830 census. By 1834, Nancy had escaped into Lumpkin Co Ga . She denied her Cherokee heritage to avoid the trail. Her husband's brothers and their children were sent on the trail despite the fact that Lem Childers had married a Vann, whose father was a big speaker for the Cherokees in DC.. (I have these records) I did find a will abstract for a Richard Childress dated 1830 Laurens Co. The names indexed were: Martha, Nancy, John, Sarah, Robert, Hannah, Abraham, Patsy, Lucy, George Fuller Sr and Jr, Robert Tuater (sic), Melendy, and Betsy. (all Childress) I plan to order the estate packet. Will get back to you when it arrives. Jo The Cherokee application also states Nancy and John's children could speak the Cherokee language as Nancy Duncan was 1/2 Cherokee..The application goes on to state she was born in NC, so she would not be a daughter of old Wm Duncan who lived in SC in the 1750's. Hope this helps some. Jo
I looked at my census notes for John Childers, and noticed that "his" age in 1810 was 16-26, and in 1820 was 26-45. These 2 entries, if correct, must be for a John Childers who was younger than the one that you are interested in. I may have made an error in my notes. ----- Original Message ----- From: <sparks10@bellsouth.net> To: <SCLAUREN-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, April 19, 2006 9:02 PM Subject: [SCLAUREN] Re: ThankYou Note-RobertChildressSr.Family-96thJudicialDistrict-SC1760-1860 > This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. > > Surnames: Childers, Childress, Hunnicut, Sanders, Gilstrap, Bright, Croom, > Maxwell, Smith, Duncan, Houston, Grady, Ledbetter > Classification: Query > > Message Board URL: > > http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/YeB.2ACI/311.2.2.1.1.1.1 > > Message Board Post: > > Robert I have found a good bit of information since our last message.
