Martha Nelle Craig and I spent Monday at Greenville Co., SC Library working on 96th District, Laurens District/County, SC Craig Families. We looked up the SC Historical and Genealogical Magazine reference Vol. 12 p 220 on the "passport" for John Craig and Family from Ireland. We also looked up the Ships Arrivals in Charleston for 22 Feb 1774. In 1911 the person who had this "passport" was Mr. J. L. Craig of Clinton, SC. Anyone who knows this J. L. Craig or his descendants of Clinton, SC I would appreciate a contact. The "passport" reference in my opinion was not a passport but a receipt for passage on the Ship "Betty" from the port of Larne, Ireland to Charleston, SC. Why do I say this? The receipt for passage referenced on page 220, SCH&G Mag vol 12 was signed by Abraham Woodside. In The SC Gazette (Issue 28 Feb 1774) under Timothy's Marine List was the arrival in Charleston 22 Feb 1774 of the Brigatine, "Betty", Captained by Abraham Woodside. (Note no land grants were made or listed for Craig Families in 1774.) In everything we have seen there has been no reference to Ahoghill, County Antrim, Ulster, Ireland or any other similar place other than the port of Larne. From the statements (letters to family members - burial markers and the children of William Craig ER and William Craig DC and associated probate records and wills) that Thomas Craig married his cousin Elizabeth Craig seen to authenticate the idea that James Craig and John Craig were brothers. In 1774 when James Craig bought the 139 1/2 acres in Laurens it was witnessed by John Craig. We looked up the 1785 land grant by Eleanor Craig and the SC Indent and Audited Account for Eleanor Craig and it seems to verify that John Craig was indeed a Revolutionary War soldier who died well before 20 Sept 1785 the date of the SC Indent was of record. We have a number of audited accounts for James Craig men but no direct connection evident without further analysis at this time. So our conclusion is that the place in Ireland that that James and John Craig came from is indeterminate at this time. Also I have concluded that more than likely James Craig's father and John Craig's father was named William Craig. Why? Both James Craig (deed of 1794) and John Craig (from Duncan Creek Data) oldest sons were named William. The naming pattern in the 1700s. Therefore in Ireland one should be looking to William Craig families with sons James with wife ???? and John with wife Eleanor. Any comments or information appreciated.
