    1. Re: [SCLAUREN] MARCHBANKS/MARJORIBANKS family
    2. Hey Dolores - good to hear from you again. Unless there is another Stephen than the one b. 1770, Patience can't be his dau cause she was born in 1765. i have 2 Stephens b. 1770 - but i believe they are the same one - isn't Stephen b. 1770 the father of your Stephen Perry Marchbanks b. 1805? do you have a parent for George who maried Unity? There are several George's running around and i'm not sure who belongs to who. leigh

    1. Re: [SCLAUREN] Marchbanks and League property
    2. furhter info - there were 2 Joel Leagues - one was a child of Joab and Patience Marchbanks League who was born in 1795 and married an Elizabeth Jane.. The other one was the brother of Joab League and maried Mary Holdt. This one was born in 1783. the closeness of their ages can cause some confusion on which one it is. leigh Joab was the son of James and Mary Ann Marchbanks League from VA. Mary Ann was the d/o George Marchbanks (known as the Jacobite) and his wife Ann Echols of VA.

    1. Re: [SCLAUREN] MARCHBANKS and LEAGUE families of Greenville and Laurens Count...
    2. Tom - i can probably answer alot of your questions on these families as i descend from both. Thanks Richard for the info on the land grants Unity is belived to be the wife of the George Marchbanks you mentioned. Also, they had a son Stephen b. abt 1770. I have no information on Joel Marchbanks. Patience Marchbanks' parents are unidentified. She married Joab League. Stephen Marchbanks who died in 1805 had a wife named Mary (Polly). unknown if she was the one excommunicated. There is a book in the Greenville County Library by Betty Willie on the Marchbanks and League families that may have the answers you want. The Marchbanks family has several websites - if you do a search on George Marchbanks or Majoribanks - you will find much much info. leigh smith

    1. MARCHBANKS/MARJORIBANKS family
    2. George MARCHBANKS was b. circa1725, Scotland, and was prob. the first to use the shortened of the name MARCHBANKS. I don't have Joel as his son, but I don't know that I have all his children. I do have Patience who md. Joab LEAGUE as the dau of Stephen, I think, but my records are on the other computer, and I can't open those until tomorrow. I can tell you for certain then. Stephen's wife was Mary "Polly", and Stephen also had a sister named Mary Ann. Stephen also had a son named George as well as Elias, and a dau Elizabeth. I'm sure this is not all his children. In reference to the Polly who was excommunicated or dismissed: keep in mind that "whoredom" at that time may have been very different from what we would think. Often, their sins were much less than what we would think; she may merely have been caught talking to a man who was not a member of her family. He could have been someone who innocently visited her at her home, and someone else came and "caught" him there. I don't know, but I do know that many folks were dismissed from church for sins that we would not consider sins today. Also there were quite a few "Marys" in the MARCHBANKS family. You might go back and look at the church records to see when a Mary or Polly joined and if she is listed w/other family members. Who are they??? I hope this helps you a bit. I'll be happy to share whatever I have. Dolores Miller Pringle

    1. Joseph Lyon reply
    2. Richard A. Lorenz
    3. Joseph Lyon lived in Laurens Co. )near Cedar Grove, I believe), from 1790 to at least 1830. I do not find a James Lyon in any of my notes. In Deed M-220, Joseph Lyons sold 111 acres to his son Emanuel. This was recorded in 1832, located in the Durbin Creek watershed. I do not have anything about other relationships. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Tom Krakow" <tomkrakow@juno.com> To: <SCLAUREN-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, January 16, 2006 7:20 PM Subject: [SCLAUREN] MARCHBANKS and LEAGUE families of Greenville and Laurens Counties > Hi all, > > I am attempting to determine the family relationships of the following > early residents of Greenville and Laurens Counties. > > What became of Joel MARCHBANKS born between 1774 and 1780, listed in the > 1800 census of Laurens County, listed right next door to George > MARCHBANKS, age 45 and up. 1. Marchbanks and League property
    2. Richard A. Lorenz
    3. George Marchbanks and Joab League received land grants in 1791 and 1793 according to the Union County Land Grant Maps. (Upper right corner of Map 18). This is near Bethany Church and Cooks Corner, Durbin Creek watershed, near top of Muddy Creek. Ben Kivell's 900 acre grant borders these properties. 128 acres of George's property was sold to Charles Cox some time before 1830. This is given in Deed M-184. I do not have many deeds before 1829 in my notes. Joel League appears first in the 1829 census with a family of 14. Deed N-93, 1821, states that James Garrett sold 57 acres in Enoree River watershed to Joel League, where he lives. This was part of the 900 acre grant to Ben Kivell, so it was in the same general vicinity as the above properties. Going back to Joab, Deed M-127, 1828, states that part of Joab League's land grant was sold by Wm. Meador, and mentions that a bordering property was owned by Joab League. The Land Grant Maps show that Joab had received at least 2 land grants, so I am not certain what land was sold, but the above does indicate that Joab still owned some land in Laurens Co. in 1828. Sorry that this does not help with any relationships. 1. MARCHBANKS and LEAGUE families of Greenville and Laurens Counties
    2. Tom Krakow
    3. Hi all, I am attempting to determine the family relationships of the following early residents of Greenville and Laurens Counties. What became of Joel MARCHBANKS born between 1774 and 1780, listed in the 1800 census of Laurens County, listed right next door to George MARCHBANKS, age 45 and up. Also, in 1809, Joel was mentioned in a deed in Laurens County. After that, there is no mention of Joel in the Laurens deeds. Is Joel a son of George? Who is Patience MARCHBANKS, who married Joab LEAGUE, of the prominent LEAGUE family of Greenville and Laurens Counties. Patience was probably born in the 1760s. Is she another daughter of George MARCHBANKS above? On the same day in 1805, George and Unity MARCHBANKS were dismissed [transferred] from the Clear Spring Church of Simpsonville, Greenville County. Was Unity = George's wife? Also, in February 1806, Mary (also mentioned as Polly), was named as the administrator of the estate of Stephen MARCHBANKS in Laurens County. I am assuming that Mary was Stephen's widow. Then in 1808 in the minutes of the Clear Spring Church we read: "Excommunicated, Polly Marchbanks for the sin of whoredom." Is this the same women? Finally, in 1816, in the probate records of Laurens County, South Carolina: "Sally Marchbanks, dec'd, letters of administration granted to Jos. or Jas. Lyon. Who's widow is Sally? Possibly Joel's, being that Unity appears to be George's wife and Polly/Mary, appears to have been Stephen's. Tom in Chapel Hill

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/YeB.2ACI/545.1.2.1.1.2.2.2 Message Board Post: I am sure that the author of "Descendants of Daniel Martin" worked very hard to compile the information in her book, and I mean no disrespect, but she did not include one single footnote with sources for her conclusions. Fortunately, no mainstream genealogical organization accepts such undocumented sources any more, but we must spend time trying to prove or disprove what our predecessors have alleged. There were two John Rodgers in Charlotte Cty VA at the same time. One was a son of Andrew Rodgers who died in 1755 in Lunenburg VA, and he was mentioned in Andrew's will. This John Rodgers was born about 1730. He married Margaret McNeese and moved to Laurens SC with his widowed mother, Jane, his brother Andrew (who married Margaret McNeese Rodgers' sister, Ann) and other members of Andrew Rodgers of Lunenburg's family. The second John Rodgers was a son of William Rodgers (who died in VA in 1750 and who was a son of Andrew Rodgers of Lunenburg who died in 1755) and Margaret Caldwell. This second John Rodgers was born in 1746. He married Margaret Daugherty and moved to KY and TN where he died. Two John Rodgers men; each married a Margaret; each John with same family connections. It is easy to get them confused, but thanks to information that is available now to researchers, their separate lives are known and can be documented. I encourage you to "verify" the above facts that are available in VA and SC records, and which I hope to publish with documented sources and footnotes in the near future. In my opinion to hold onto books of questionable or dubious value and to continue to refer to them is not helpful. Good luck to all of us. Regards,
