Deed M-85, 1827, has the estate of Wm. Moore transferring land to George and Seth Moore. Mentions children of Wm. as George, Seth, and Patsy Forgy, wife of Asa Forgy. Also mentions Wm's wife as being Elizabeth, but my notes are not clear about this. Could this be the George Moore that you are asking about? Yeah, I know most of the Briggs disappeared from Laurens. Rev. Jesse remained until his death in 1850. But, now that I think on it, I believe he actually lived in Union County at the time of his death. One of the problems in researching these folks is they lived in that little area where Union, Laurens and Spartanburg Counties meet and they have records in all three counties. I'll betcha the Craigs did, also. Dear Mickey, "Two of their daughters married CRAIGs (William and Elijah) and one married a BRIGGS (my Mary m. William BRIGGS)." So far from about 1790s to 1850 I have not seen an Elijah but plenty of William, John and James Craigs in Laurens Co., SC.. Early on in Laurens 1790 and 1800 there were a number of Briggs; John, James and Elizabeth Briggs. In the 1800-1810 time frame the Briggs seem to leave Laurens District, SC. Some of the earlier Irish Immigrants (1763-1773) that were Craigs were: Alexander who later seems to show a lot in Chesterfield Co., SC as a surveyor, William ( had a family as he is the only one that got 300 acres, himself and 4 others as per land grants - 100 acres for HH and 50 acres for each dependent including slaves) James, Mary, John, Anne, Quinton and Robert (all got 100 acres each). I have not seen a entry other than this for a Quinton in SC. God Bless. I would appreciate anyone's thoughts, opinions or even professional knowledge on this general genealogical question regarding the reading and analyzing of information on tombstones. I checked all my books and researched extensively on the internet, but I could not find the answer. I couldn't find this as an example in any genealogical discussions, how to writings, etc., regarding cemeteries and tombstone inscriptions. First, in an old family cemetery in South Carolina, I find the tombstone of my direct ancestor which reads exactly as follows: William Ligon b 1772 d June 25 1850 In his 78 year There are numerous extensive readings/transcriptions of the cemetery that this grave appears in, and this reading is consistent. Additionally, I personally have visited this cemetery, and took pictures, some 15 years ago and so from that visit can confirm this is an accurate transcription of the cemetery. Now my question: How would you interpret the phrase "In his 78 year"? Was he in fact 78 years old plus? Or was he 77 plus? I know this phrasing of age does appear regularly on tombstones, and I thought I remembered there being a "genealogical" perspective of how to interpret and use this phrase to determine/estimate the birth. Remember that your birthday that you celebrate is the number of years completed since your actual birth. So when you had your first birthday, having completed 1 year of life, you were thus beginning your second year. Thus, I am thinking that William Ligon was 77 years old when he died, not yet having reached his 78th birthday when he died on June 25th. So his 78th birthday would have been in the second half of 1850, after June 25th, but would have to have been before the end of the year so as to calculate correctly with the birth year of 1772 already noted on the stone. Therefore, I am thinking that his actual date of birth was sometime between June 25 and December 31, 1772. Does this make sense? Or would you say that he in fact was already 78 years old? Thus, to calculate correctly with the year of birth noted on the stone, placing his date of birth sometime before June 25, 1772, but after January 1, 1772. I hope you can follow this writing, and I appreciate your thoughts. If you can cite a written discussion or source in print or online that deals with this specific issue, I would greatly appreciate it. Robert M. Wilbanks IV Scottsdale, Arizona

Hi Laurens group, I finished looking at Laurens County, SC, Guardian Records, 1807-68, FHL film #1029279, and unfortunately, I found very little. I looked for the following surnames: BALL, BURGESS, CAMPBELL, COMPTON/CRUMPTON, GREEN, HESTERLY/HESTILOW, HODGES, IRBY, KNIGHT, MCCARLEY/MCCURLEY/MCKERLEY, MEDLOCK or MATLOCK, MURPHY, NELSON, PUCKETT, ROBERTS, WATTS, and WREN. The only hit was for Mary HILL, guardian for William ATWOOD, her son in 1821. Mary HILL was also guardian of Josephine A. BALL, in June of 1821. There were also several entries for a Barrel LEAK, guardian for William P. BALL. There were maybe four pages total of accountings and sworn statements regarding the BALLs. Note that Burrell LEAK was also the guardian for Harriet LIGON [?spelling] in 1829. These folks were probably all related. I would be glad to make copies for the person researching BALL. That researchers should contact me directly at TomKrakow@juno.com. I also have on order "Divisions of Estate" LDS film #1029279, and will try to check for these names on that film also. ...if you have access to an LDS Family History Center, there are some great old Ligon documents on Film# 24095 "Court of Equity Records, Equity bills, 1826-1835" 1827 - No 2 Box 13 Susannah Ligon/William Ligon and there's another one regarding Thomas Ligon on this film.
Hi Robert, It's been awhile since we've corresponded so I'm not sure how much has transpired since that time. I paid for a Wright cousin to DNA test and at the same time, another descendant of Thomas Wright and Elizabeth McGehee was also testing and they matched! Their results are under haplogroup J2 in the Wright DNA Project: http://www.wright-dna.org/ I began corresponding with the descendant who matched and he sent me a copy of Thomas' will! The will is dated 12 Nov 1790 and is from Cumberland Co. Also, there's a gentlemen, Robert Grant, who is compiling and offering books for sale on the George Wright line. Send me your address off-list and I'll mail you a copy of the will and Robert Grant's info. Best regards, Katherine
Hello, First, please excuse for cross-posting. You may receive more than one copy of this e-mail if you are on the same multiple mailing lists that I am on and with this e-mail being posted to. I am researching my direct ancestor Thomas Wright, Patriot of the Revolutionary War, who lived most of his life in Cumberland County, Virginia. His father was George Wright of Essex County, Virginia. His widow, Elizabeth McGehee Wright, and a couple of children (my ancestress Martha "Patsy" Wright Ligon) migrated to Laurens District, South Carolina circa 1805 or so. Other researchers have his death varying from before 1791, or around 1794, in Cumberland County, Virginia, to even a death time-period of 1820/1821 in Laurens District, South Carolina. The 1791 date is based upon a supposed will and probate in Cumberland County, Virginia. I cannot find the basis for the 1794 date. The 1820 and 1821 dates are also based upon supposed will and probate in Laurens District, South Carolina. I would like to think that my research in Laurens District, South Carolina has been thorough and as a result I have turned up no such will or probate, or other record of death, for Thomas Wright in that location. I think this death date and location has been confused with that of his wife Elizabeth McGehee Wright whose grave I have visited and the tombstone reads June 22, 1821 as the date of death. If someone has records to prove me right or wrong, I would greatly love thorough citations and at least abstracts or transcriptions if not a full copy of the record itself. The date that looks most likely to me is that of about January 24, 1791 with some sources referencing, but not clearly, a will and or probate of estate around that time period. If anyone could locate a source or citation for such a will and/or probate, or even provide an abstract or transcription, I would be ever so grateful. Of course, a copy of the will and/or probate package would be best of all. I'm sorry that I don't have more information to provide. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, Robert M. National Geographic "The Greatest Journey Ever Told, The Trail of Our DNA" March 2006. For those who participate in the Genographic Project per providing their DNA sample and getting their 12 marker DNA results they should read this article. When reading the article pay particular attention to the paragraph on page 73 which reads; "The Tribe's DNA is unlikely to yield any simple truths, at least in the short term. Native American groups like the Seaconke-Wampanoag have European and African as well as Native American ancestry. And as Theodore Schurr explains to those donating blood, "the initial results won't reveal a person's full heritage." They could point back to Metacomet's people-or to ancestors from another continent. "A fuller picture will emerge only after the project analyzes each person's full set of chromosomes and compares them with the Genographic Project's growing lode of DNA from other Groups." As some of us has been pointing out also, that the 12 marker results provided to the Genographic Project's participants, "the initial results won't reveal a person's full heritage" is just part of what it takes and requires to track a person's full heritage, "A fuller picture will emerge only after the project analyzes each person's full set of chromosomes and compares them with the Genographic Project's growing lode of DNA from other groups." Interesting that the article makes this type of quote but again never really quantifies in terms of DNA testing what a person's "full set of chromosomes" really is that is required in comparing to others. If you really understand DNA testing you know that it takes more than 12 markers to determine the "fuller picture." Another little bit of information for those participating in the role of DNA testing and what people tell others and don't tell others that is happening with their DNA. God Bless. Jackie, This may be a dumb question but I have to ask as I'm so excited! I requested a DNA on my mother's maiden name of Kirkpatrick but I'm really interested in her mother...Simmons. We're looking for Native American ancestry. My mother's DNA would have her mother's DNA???? Shirley McCoy brashergen@aol.com
So many of the surnames won't give you any info on DNA studies if you can not provide someone for the DNA study. I don't think they take into consideration that other's have the surname but it is not their direct line but one of the mother's lines. This is what I have run into at least. Jackie
