My notes show a John P. Saxon in the 1850 census, age 40, wife Nancy, age 32, with son John F.? Saxon, age 3. Census page 289, dwelling No. 1370. They might have lived a couple miles southeast of Harmony Church or Brewerton. Not certain about this. ----- Original Message ----- From: "brenda compton" <bmcompton2000@yahoo.com> To: <SCLAUREN-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, March 24, 2006 12:30 AM Subject: [SCLAUREN] Re: John Saxton married to Emila Brown > Hello, I have a John Saxton in my files, their daughter Ada Saxton b. It might be interesting that two names mentioned on your Saxon message connect (?) Joseph Irby Sr. , Joseph Irby Jr. (his son), and Greaf Irby (Joseph's nephew?...most likely) who were all killed at the Massacre at Hayes Station near the Laurens Newberry border in 1781. Yancy Saxon was also killed there. William Irby was the son of Joseph Irby Sr. and they lived in Newberry Co. William later moved to Lauren's county. James H. Irby was William's son and Joseph's grandson. Linda Graves ----- Original Message ----- From: "Richard A. Is this Saxon family related to Yancy Saxon who died at the Massacre of Hayes Station either Oct. or Nov. or 1781? Bloody Bill Cunningham was the leader of the Tory group who killed nearly everyone there after the Patriots' had surrendered. Deed Book P, page 17, no date on the deed, but registered at the courthouse in 1845. Arnold Milner and Isabella Saxon marriage contract. 400 acres where she resided was transferred to her son Lewis Saxon. Property bordered Willis Wallace, H. Saxon, Wm. Simpson, Stephen Franks, Lewis Saxon, Wm. Henderson, and Hellen ? Goodgion. No location for the property was given. My guess is that it was on Lick Creek, an easterly tributary of North Rabun. The 1820 / 1825 map shows "Saxon" at approximately this location. Does anyone know who Isabella's first husband was, and does anyone know for sure where the above property was located? The following are some deeds that mention the property of Charles Saxon. Deed Book M, page 7, 1827, Charles Saxon sells 333 acres in Rabun Cr. watershed to Dr. Wm. Irby. Two parcels. 1/ 289 acres, partition of his father's land on plat as Tract No. 2. 2/ 44 acres, Tract No. 3. borders James Lowry ?, Thomas Johnson. (The plat is not included in the record). Deed M-151, 1830, (may be the same as the above land or a nearby tract). Wm. F. Downs sells 169 acres in Rabun watershed to Sam Saxon. Converted within by Charles Saxon to said Downs. Plat included that shows bordering property owners Wm. Irby and Wm. Johnson. Deed M-152, 1830, Sam Saxon and wife Oney sell 169 acres to Hugh Saxon. "Part of my father's old tract converted by Charles Saxon to W. F. Downs to Sam Saxon. Deed N-153, 1835, James Johnson sells 130 acres to Wm. Wilson. Borders Chas. Paxon / Saxon, Morgan's, Johnson. (I do not have any Paxon person in any of my notes, so I believe that "Saxon" is the correct name for Chas.). Deed N-54, 1834, Richard F. Simson sells 1/2 acre lot in Laurens to John Garlington. "Square to east, Chas. Saxon deceased, being the lot formerly owned by my father on which is my store and office, also stable lot". Deed N-53, 1834, John Garlington and wife Susan w. sell 1/2 acre lot in Laurens to John S. James. Corner lot, Square to east, road to Greenville, heirs of Charles Saxon. ----Richard F. Simpson and previously by his father Col. John Simpson ----- lots of Sam Todd and Harvey Cleveland. In Deed N-230,1838, the above lot was sold to J. H. Irby. 1/2 acre borders square on east, Greenville ____ on south, Jail Street on west, David / Davis Hill on north (possibly "Davis and Hill ??"). Deed Book M, page 246, 1829, has a plat showing property that I believe to be just east of Youngs Store. John D. A. Murphy in trust for heirs of Peter Mazyck (Orangeburg) sold 100 acres on a branch of the Enoree to John Harris. The land was part of a 500 acre grant to Geo. Saxby in 1772, sold to Peter Mazyck in 1772, and then went to his heirs with John D. A. Murphy in trust. The plat shows 100 acres that was sold to Henry Thompson, and other acreage sold to Hannah Garrett. The plat bordered Arch. Young on west, Henry Thompson and John Harris on NE, John Harris and Hezekiah Gray on E, Dr. John N. Young on E. Plat shows Boggy Branch on the northwest side, and Little Beaverdam on the south. (Little Beaverdam is shown as Wallace Branch of Beaverdam on the new Topo maps). Plat also shows road to Youngs Store, the Charleston Road, and a north/south running road to Caldwell's Mill. The list seems to be relatively inactive, so I am putting on a couple of property records that might be of interest to someone. Deed Book M, page 14, 1826, has Stephen Tiner and wife Sarah selling 154 acres on North Creek to John Davis. Property on road from Black's Store to Laurens Court House. A plat is included that shows the property running west from North Creek across a main-looking road. The property borders John Dunlap on the east, Whited Wilks and James Young on the south, H. W. and John Young on the west, and part of original tract on the north occupied by Joel Tucker. The property was transferred to Stephen Tyner by a court process. (I believe that Black's Store was at Milton). Deed Book O, page 37, 1841, looks like a transfer of the same piece of property. John Davis sells 129 acres in North Creek watershed to Hamm (Harmon?) Miller. 50 ft square at cemetery. On road from Belfast. Borders Wm. Bailey on east, Witehead Wilk, Silas Bailey South, John Young west, Elijah Tribble north. Formerly estate of Wm. Dendy, Esq. Purchased by Stephen Simms? (Tyner??), then to John Davis. I believe that this property was about 3/4 mile south of New China Church, where M. S. Bailey is shown on the 1883 map of Laurens Co. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Dave Hanna" <dlhanna@verizon.net> To: <SCLAUREN-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, March 07, 2006 10:11 AM Subject: Re: [SCLAUREN] Duncans Creek Presbyterian Church > Herb, > > For the location and information regarding the Duncan's Creek Presbyterian > Church see: > > http://www.laurenscounty.org/history/dcreek.html > > and for more details including a cemetery listing see: > > http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Valley/9708/dcem.html > > There is a street address listing shown in a directory at: > > http://laurens.areaconnect.com/churches.htm > > > Dave Hanna > Georgetown, Texas > > Herbert Hendricks wrote: > >>Would like the address/location of Duncans Creek Presbyterian Church. >> >>Also Odell's Chapel which I believe is a little west of Whitmire on the >>Clinton Hwy, route 72. >> >>Thank you for your time an effort. >> >>God Bless. >>Herb Hendricks >>Retired NASA Physicist >>Hendricks DNA Project Group Administrator >>Secretary Hendricks Family Association >>Herb_316@MSN.com<mailto:Herb_316@MSN.com> >>1210 Long Meadow DR >>Lynchburg, VA 24502 >>434 832 7246 >>Major/Smith/Hendricks >>http://www.ftdna.com/public/hendricks/<http://www.ftdna.com/public/hendricks/> >> >> >>============================== >>Jumpstart your genealogy with OneWorldTree. For those interested in DNA there is quite a good article in this months issue of Family Chronicles found in the magazine racks at Barnes and Noble Bookstores. S. C. Meates' article "Taking a Y-DNA Test, What Can be Expected" contains a lot of useful information that explains the pitfall of 12 marker only testing and explains in an excellent manner what 37+ marker testing provides in separating out family members. Meates' illustrates the short falls of initial 12 marker testing and documents the necessity in this approach of searching the Y-Base, Y search and SMGF (12-18 marker search bases) usage to try an connect to a surname which not often matches to your desired surname. Overall an excellent article to bring you up to speed and he labors hard to show what is necessary to know when doing Y-DNA testing. God Bless.
