Silas Medlock apparently did not leave any record of property ownership (deed), but there are several deeds that show pretty well where he lived. As best as I can tell, he lived at between Brewerton and a mile or so southeast of there between the main road and the Saluda River. The pertinant deeds follow. Deed Book M, page 196, 1829, has John Simmons conveying his interest in the land of John ? Simmons, dec., to Caty Simmons. The land was 517 acres on the north side of Saluda River. It was bordered east by James Clardy, northeast by Reuben Carter, north by James Clardy, northwest by Thos. Ware, and south and southeast by Silas Medlock. Witnessed by Isaac Teague, Thos. Ware, and Hardimon Simmons. In the 3 deeds that followed the above, Drusilla Simmons, Wm. and Mahaly Clardy, and James Simmons also conveyed their interests in the above land to Caty Simmons. Deed N-159, 1836, has Caty Simmons converying 97 acres in the Saluda watershed to Jesse E. Clardy. Bordered west by James Loveless, north by Silas Medlock, east by Chas. Jones, south by James Loveless and Chas. Jones, by Reuben Carter, and by forks of a branch. It appears that Caty Simmons sold off most of the rest of her 517 acres through deeds M-223 and N-83 by selling to James Loveless and Abner Noble. The Noble tract was later sold to Chas. Jones (Deed N-183). Deed O-238, 1839, has E. F. Latimer sellin 218 acres in the Saluda and Walnut Cr. watersheds to Sam Beeks. Bordered John Smith, Aaron Clore, James Jones, Silas Medlock, Absalom Medlock, Thos. Ware, and Geo. Tierce. Witnesses Wm. Weatherall, and Baylie ? Mattison. (The fact that the land was in 2 watersheds means that it must have been on both sides of the road that runs between the 2 watersheds). Deed O-256 has John Smith selling 220 acres in Saluda watershed to Thos. Robertson. Bordered north by Silas Medlock, northeast by James Henderson, east by Harrison Daniel, and southwest by the Saluda River. Deed P-61, 1846, has E. Williamson selling 134 acres on the side of the road from Greenville to Hamburg to Wm. Arnold. Bordered James Eppes, Wm. Puckett, Silas Medlock, and Geo. Gerreld. Deed P-124 probably refers to the above tract even though the acreages are different. I might have misread one of them. With this deed Wm. Arnold sold 154 acres on the west side of the road leading from Greenville to Hamburg to Sam L. Maddox. Bordered James Eppes, Wm. Puckett, Silas Medlock, and Geo. Gerral. The above tract is sold again through Deed Q-11, 1852, in which Sam. D. Maddox sells 154 acres on west side of "the" road to Geo. Geral. Bordered James Eppes, Wm. Puckett, Silas Medlock, Wm. Puckett, and Geo. Geral. The above land is sold again in Deed Q-30, 1852. Geo. Geral sold 154 acres, west side of the road from -----. Bordered James M. Eppes, estate of Wm. Puckett, Wm. Puckett, and Geo. Geral. Note that Silas Medlock is not mentioned, but no one else is substituted for him. I tried to follow these tracts of land on to later years in hopes of finding names of the owners or neighbors on the 1883 map of Laurens Co. I was not successful with this. The people mentioned in the O-238 deed correlated very well with the census records for that time period. Many of the names in that deed appeared close together in the census listing. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Richard A. I looked at my census notes for John Childers, and noticed that "his" age in 1810 was 16-26, and in 1820 was 26-45. These 2 entries, if correct, must be for a John Childers who was younger than the one that you are interested in. I may have made an error in my notes. ----- Original Message ----- From: <sparks10@bellsouth.net> To: <SCLAUREN-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, April 19, 2006 9:02 PM Subject: [SCLAUREN] Re: ThankYou Note-RobertChildressSr.Family-96thJudicialDistrict-SC1760-1860 > This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. > > Surnames: Childers, Childress, Hunnicut, Sanders, Gilstrap, Bright, Croom, > Maxwell, Smith, Duncan, Houston, Grady, Ledbetter > Classification: Query > > Message Board URL: > > http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/YeB.2ACI/311.2.2.1.1.1.1 > > Message Board Post: > > Robert I have found a good bit of information since our last message. She married John Childers/ Childress in Laurens Co around 1792 and had several children whose CSA and other records state they were b. Laurens Co SC. They are in the 1800-1810 census for Laurens Co. John died in the 1820's and Nancy carried her children to McMinn Co near John's brother Abraham's family. By 1834, since she was 1/2 Cherokee according to applications she migrated into Lumpkin Co Ga and kept her heritage hidden from those responsible for the removal. Only close friends knew she and her children were of Cherokee blood. Unfortunately, the family of Abraham was sent on the trail. His son was Lemuel Childress and his family had to leave their large land holdings and settle in Indian Territory Arkansas. He married a Vann, who was also of mixed heritage.her father was an important speaker for the Cherokees in DC.

Cleburne, I'd like to encourage you to participate in the Medlock/Matlock DNA project. Either you or one of your male descendants could help provide very, very valuable information which might help point the way towards finding the parentage/ancestors of Silas Medlock. Your DNA could provide the key that we, as Silas Medlock's descendants, have been looking for for a long, long time. Won't you please seriously consider getting in touch with Terry Gladfelter at Carlg0139@aol.com. Sincerely, Aleta Pope Hudson 4th great granddaughter of Silas Medlock and Catherine Gaines Murff
I do not have any family information. I do not have any census records for Waldemar Murff. He appeared in several recorded deeds. Deed Book P, page 39, 1845, has Joseph Sullivan transferring 350 acres in trust to Thos. J. Sullivan. Located on road from Greenville to Augusta in Reedy and Saluda watersheds. Borders Geo. French, Stephen Clement, Wm. Cox, and Waldersman Murff. Deed P-56, 1847, has John Hudgens selling 136 acres in Saluda Riv. watershed to Geo. French. Suit of Hampton Stone to me that goods, lands of John M. Branya ? (Benham???). On Saluda. Borders Walter Murff. Witnesses James McMilam and S W Anderson. Deed Q-159, no date, has Sarah Medlock, Waldeman Murff, Benj. and Mat. Johnson, James Simmons, and Lucy Medlock selling 89 acres to Thos. Taylor. "James Medlock, dec., sold tract to Thos. Taylor". (My notes are not clear on the above, so the microfilm should be examined. I believe that this means that Sarah et al were the heirs of the James Medlock land, but I am not certain). Deed Q-159, 1856, has Thos. Taylor selling this same land to James Taylor. Bordered Sarah Medlock and the late Wm. Puckett. Deed Q-178, no date, but recorded at the courthouse in 1857, has Walderman Murff selling 91 3/4 acres on Saluda Riv. to James M. Eppes. The earliest census record that I have in my notes for Silas Medlock is 1829. He headed a family of 3. He lived near James Medlock who headed a family of 5. There was a younger Wm. Burnside in Laurens Co. Although this will not help identify the son of James, Sr., it should be of interest to Burnside researchers. A Wm. E. Burnside is in the 1850 census, 35 years old. On or near page 228 in the census. Deed Book Q, page 181, 1857, has W. E. Burnside selling 14 1/2 acres to a group of people as a grave yard. "Known as the Maulding Burial Ground", on road from Cross Hill to Waterloo, a half mile from Cross Hill. (I believe that in 1857 Cross Hill was located at the "5-point" location). Deed Q-266, 1861, Milton Cox mortgaged 36 9/10 acres to John G. Turner. Bordered Wm. E. Burnside, James Leamon, M.F.Bullock, Wm. Hitt, and John g. Turner. (No location was given in the deed, but I believe that the land was not too far from Cross Hill). In Deed N-186, 1837, Geo. Holditch and wife Jane sold 175 acres total in the Little River watershed to Willis and Wm. E. Burnside. "Thos. Nickles Place" plus a piece of land formerly Dan Craddock. Sold to James McCollums. Borders Nat. Day, Feril Milam, WDA Dean, and Little River. The Craddock tract bordered Sanford Powell, WDA Dean. "Dean now owns the part of the Craddock land sold to MCollums. (I believe that this land is further upstream than most of the other Burnside tracts). In the 1840 census for Wm. T. Burnside, he shows 3 male "children", one in the 20-30 age bracket that could (repeat-could) correspond to Wm. E., and one in the age bracket 30-40. I do not have any information on the age of Willis Burnside mentioned in the above deed. I do not have any census records in my notes for any more William Burnsides after 1850. According to one source, Wm. T., born 1780, was a son of James Burnside, Sr. I do not know about the accuracy of this, but there was a Wm. T. in Laurens Co. who was born about 1780. Could this have been the source for the above "source"? The Laurens Co. census of 1840 has a Wm. T. age 60-70, and the 1850 census has a Wm. T. age 70. The 1850 census has an Ann age 40 who could be either his wife or sister. The 1830 census has a Wm. F. age 40. The T and F can be confused with the old script, and I do not have a copy of the original census in order to be certain about this middle initial. The 1810 through 1829 censuses have 2 Wm. Burnsides, one of whom corresponds to a person born about 1780. The other was born before 1786. Both lived along Beaverdam Creek, I believe, a tributary of Little River. The Wm. T. in 1850 also lived in this vicinity. The W. F. in 1830 looks like he lived over toward Cross Hill, probably in the Cane Cr. or Mudlick Cr. watersheds. Deed Book M, page 40, 1814, has Wm. T. Burnside and wife Mary selling 54 acres to Wm. Crosson. "Part of land formerly Joseph Hollingsworth converted by his heirs to David Hollingsworth, then to James Burnside, and then to Wm. T. Burnside. Deed M-41, 1827, has this same piece of property sold by Wm. Crosson to James Atwood Williams. It identifies this property as being in the Mudlick Cr. watershed. James Burnside owned some land on Mudlick. Examples are deeds F-208, F-209, F-443, M-24, and M-41. Deed M-243, 1831, has Wm. Burnside and wife Eleanor selling 21 acres on Beaverdam Cr. to John Odell. A plat is shown. The land borders Wm. Burnside, Fowler's Mill, Robert Workman, and Thos. Fowler. "Part of tract granted to John Lucas". Deed M-74, 1828, has Bluford ? F. Griffen mortgaging 376 acres on Beaverdam Cr. to John Odell. A plat is shown which has 177 acres on the southwest side of the river and 199 acres on the northeast side. "Estate of Wm. Young". Borders Est. of Wm. and Thos. Burnside, dec., Wm. Young, John Odell, Joseph Babb, and Robert Workman. Deed M-254 shows the same plat, described as a survey requested by Beaufort Griffen, 1828. Shows same bordering property owners, including "Wm. and Thos. Burnside estate"on the northwest side. Deed M-200, 1831, has Bluford F. Griffen selling 402 acres on Little River near Beaverdam Cr. Bordering property owners Wm. and Thos. Burnside, dec., John Odell, and Ben Brown. A plat is included that shows Wm. Burnside on the northwest, and Hannah Burnside on the north, adjacent to the southwest side of Little River. Deed M-255, 1832, includes the identical M-200 plat. In this deed, B. F. Griffen and wife Agnes L. sell 778 acres made of 2 tracts on Beavedam Cr. to John Odell. Tract #1 is 326 acres and borders Wm. & Thos. Burnside estate, Robert Workman, Joseph Babb, John Odell, and Wm. Young (minor). Tract #2 is 402 acres and borders Wm. and Thos. Burnside estate, John Odell, and Ben Brown. The above does not make it at all clear as to which William was the son of James, Sr., but maybe it will help. According to an article on page 461 of The Laurens County Scrapbook, the Liberty Springs Presbyterian Church was founded in 1787. It is located near the center of Cross Hill. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Herbert Hendricks" <Herb_316@msn.com> To: <SCLAUREN-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, April 12, 2006 4:17 PM Subject: [SCLAUREN] Liberty Springs Meeting House > Anyone know about Liberty Springs Meetinghouse, 30 acres of land located > on a branch of Cane Creek. This is the Wm. who was born about 1773 and married a Margaret Fuller, I believe. The following directions describe where I think they lived. If this is incorrect, or someone has a more accurate description of where they lived, please let me know. My guess about where they lived is based on the 1883 map that shows a T. Fuller, and on the following 3 Deed descriptions. First, the directions. From Waterloo take the road toward Cross Hill. Go approximately 3.2 miles which takes you past a golf course and Harris Springs. Turn left and go between 1.7 and 2.0 miles, and the location for their old farm will be on the right within this distance range, I believe. There is a road to the left at about 1.9 miles that serves serveral homes. Deed Book M, page 5, 1825, has Betsy Griffen, James Lowe, and Moses Griffen selling either 8 or 80 acres to Alsey Fuller. This property is "where Betsy Griffen lives", and it borders James Fuller, William Fuller, and Betsy C. Griffeth. Deed M-162, 1830, has Daniel M. Winn selling 211 acres in the Cane Creek watershed to Alsey Fuller, Sr. Borders Alsey Fuller, Sr., on the north, Dendy Motes and Eliz. Canant on west and northwest, Isaac Grant and Eliz. Griffen on the south, Wm. Fuller and Alsey Fuller, Jr., on the east, and Martha Quinn on the east. Deed U-170, 1874, has A.S. and U?. S. Walker transferring 152 acres in Cane Cr. watershed to mother Loretta Walker. Husband Tandy Walker 1/3 part, M. L. Walker: 1/3 remaining 2/3 Francis Bailey and L. A. Walker. Borders Thomas fuller, Isaac Grant, and Wm. A. Fuller. ----- Original Message ----- From: <fullerdna@boltancestry.com> To: <SCLAUREN-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, April 04, 2006 4:27 PM Subject: [SCLAUREN] Southern FULLER Reunion - July 15, 2006 > This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. > > Classification: Query > > Message Board URL: > > http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/YeB.2ACI/558 > > Message Board Post: > > Southern Fullers and descendants of Southern Fuller lines are welcome to > attend the first ever Southern Fullers Reunion in beautiful Laurens > County, South Carolina! > > Many attendees are descendants of Ezekiel Fuller of the Isle of Wight, > Virginia, or Henry & Nehemiah Fuller of Caswell Co, NC. > > For more reunion info, visit: > http://www.ourfamilyorigins.com/reunion.htm > > > ============================== > Search the US Census Collection. The only record in my notes that seems to correspond to your John F. is in the 1840 census, page 66, line 6. It shows a John F. / Y. Wolf, 20-30 years old. 1 male 0-5, 1 female 0-5, and 1 female 5-10. My copy is missing females older than 30. I believe that they lived near Neighbor's Crossroads, which is a few miles northeast of Joanna. ----- Original Message ----- From: "ILA W" <ILA7@webtv.net> To: <SCLAUREN-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, April 07, 2006 6:26 PM Subject: [SCLAUREN] Wolfe - Saxon > > Seeking information for John Francis Wolfe/Wullf/etc born 16 January > 1812.
