    1. Two other Puckett /Pinson property records
    2. Richard A. Lorenz
    3. I found 2 other deeds that help to understand the survey shown as part of Deed P-196. In Deed N-153, 1836, Seth Wilbur and wife Nancy E. sold 90 acres in Cane Cr. watershed to Marshal Starnes. "Part of Puckett's old tract". Bordered R. Cunningham, Wm. Baxter, and Wm. McGowan. Deed Q-208, no date in my notes, but recorded in 1858, John Cunningham sold 82 acres to Wm. Baxter. A plat is included, with John Cunningham on the west (across modern Hwy. 221, but labeled "road from Puckett Ferry to Waterloo" on the plat), Wm. Baxter on the east (on the far side of Cane Cr.), and Marshal Starnes and Wm. Baxter on the south. For those not familiar with Highway 221, it runs from Laurens through Waterloo, across Lake Greenwood (the dammed up Saluda River) and through the town of Greenwood. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Richard A. 3. Deed O-18, 1840, has Seth Wilbur selling 155 acres to Marshal Starnes. "Details on plat annexed, Deed of James F. Pinson from father John Pinson, 19 May, 1817. Witnesses James M. Young and A. 3. I have 11 deed records, mostly in the '30s and '40s, that mention Gaufs Creek. Two describe it as a branch of Beaverdam Cr., (the one that is a tributary of Reedy Riv.). I now think that Pyles and Gaufs are the same creek. Several names appear in both sets of deeds. Several Williamsons, Joel Ellison, and Thos. Carter, for example. J. L. Gilkerson and J. G. Humbert are mentioned in a "Gaufs" deed, which helps to locate Gaufs Branch since their names are shown on the 1883 map. I believe that Gaufs is the branch of Beaverdam that runs nearly straight down from the Greenville county line. Do not know for sure. Sam Maddox, Wm. Ellison, J. R. Ellison, Jane Ellison, Thaddeus T. Ellison, J. Henry Ellison, John, Thomas, and Cornelius Cook, Thomas, James and John Williamson, Wm. Ballentine, and Benj. Johnson also appear in Gaufs Branch deeds. Some of these people also owned land in other watersheds. Any comments on my "analysis" of the location of Pyles Cr. and Gaufs Branch will be appreciated. 1. Laurens Craigs again 4-28-2006
    2. Herbert Hendricks
    3. Martha Nelle Craig and I spent Monday at Greenville Co., SC Library working on 96th District, Laurens District/County, SC Craig Families. We looked up the SC Historical and Genealogical Magazine reference Vol. 12 p 220 on the "passport" for John Craig and Family from Ireland. We also looked up the Ships Arrivals in Charleston for 22 Feb 1774. In 1911 the person who had this "passport" was Mr. J. L. Craig of Clinton, SC. Anyone who knows this J. L. Craig or his descendants of Clinton, SC I would appreciate a contact. The "passport" reference in my opinion was not a passport but a receipt for passage on the Ship "Betty" from the port of Larne, Ireland to Charleston, SC. Why do I say this? The receipt for passage referenced on page 220, SCH&G Mag vol 12 was signed by Abraham Woodside. In The SC Gazette (Issue 28 Feb 1774) under Timothy's Marine List was the arrival in Charleston 22 Feb 1774 of the Brigatine, "Betty", Captained by Abraham Woodside. (Note no land grants were made or listed for Craig Families in 1774.) In everything we have seen there has been no reference to Ahoghill, County Antrim, Ulster, Ireland or any other similar place other than the port of Larne. From the statements (letters to family members - burial markers and the children of William Craig ER and William Craig DC and associated probate records and wills) that Thomas Craig married his cousin Elizabeth Craig seen to authenticate the idea that James Craig and John Craig were brothers. In 1774 when James Craig bought the 139 1/2 acres in Laurens it was witnessed by John Craig. We looked up the 1785 land grant by Eleanor Craig and the SC Indent and Audited Account for Eleanor Craig and it seems to verify that John Craig was indeed a Revolutionary War soldier who died well before 20 Sept 1785 the date of the SC Indent was of record. We have a number of audited accounts for James Craig men but no direct connection evident without further analysis at this time. So our conclusion is that the place in Ireland that that James and John Craig came from is indeterminate at this time. Also I have concluded that more than likely James Craig's father and John Craig's father was named William Craig. Why? Both James Craig (deed of 1794) and John Craig (from Duncan Creek Data) oldest sons were named William. The naming pattern in the 1700s. Therefore in Ireland one should be looking to William Craig families with sons James with wife ???? and John with wife Eleanor. Any comments or information appreciated. 3. I have several deed records in which Pyles Creek is mentioned. In a couple of them the deed is described as Reedy River, branch of Pyles Creek. In one it is described as Horse Cr. and Pyles Cr. Horse Cr. is the last tributary in the county of Reedy, on the western side of Reedy. I have not found a Pyles family that I can connect with this part of the county. The deeds are from the 1820s. Names on the deeds are as follows. Allen Saxon, Nimrod Nabors, John Russell, Thos. Williamson, John Williamson, Eliz. Williamson, widow Goss, Hugh Goss, Joel Ellison, Micajah Jones, Ira Arnold, John Nabors, Mason Nabors, Allen Nabors, John Bagwell, Tilman Niblet, Robt. F. 1. Re: Thomas Taylor property
    2. Richard A. Lorenz
    3. There is a Thomas Taylor who lived within a few miles of Mt. Bethel Ch., I believe. It has been suggested that he might be the father of Wm. Greenberry Taylor, but no proof is available, as I understand it. The 1840 census has a Thomas Taylor on page 13, line 1, who has 2 males of the age that matches Wm. Greenberry's age. Deed Book N, page 91, 1835, has John Pyles and wife Ruthy, and (my notes are not clear about this) daughter Pamela Taylor, wife of Thomas Taylor, sold 127 acres on a branch of Reedy River to Nathaniel Pyles. The previous owner of this land was Leroy W. Madison according to Deed N-92, 1834. Nathaniel Pyles was a bordering property owner. Deed N-237, 1836, has Joshua Smith selling 81 acres on a branch of Reedy to Sam Beeks. Bordered Elisha Williamson, Thos. Crofford, N. Pyles, T. T. Taylor, and land of the owner. Deed O-7, 1840, has Sam Beeks selling 365 acres in Reedy watershed to Thos. J. Sullivan. Bordered Francis Beeks to river, W. E. South, Elihu Williamson, and Thomas Taylor. On Reedy River. ( This might possibly be the land where T. J. Sullivan is shown on the 1883 map in grid C3, less than a mile from Mt. Bethel). This same Sullivan tract, or part of it, was transferred by his heirs as follows. Deed V-275, 1878, John D. Sullivan transferred "my interest in the estate of my father Thos. J. Sullivan" to Thos. J. Sullivan and Chas. M. Sullivan. "Homestead of Thos. J. Sullivan". Bordered E. W. South, W. W. Andrews, and W. L. Wood. Deed Q-159, no date in my notes, has Sarah Medlock, Waldeman Murff, Benj. and Mat. Johnson, James Simmons, and Lucy Medlock selling or transferring their interests in 89 acres to Thos. Taylor. "James Medlock, dec., sold tract to Thomas Taylor. Deed Q-159, 1856, has Thos. Taylor selling 89 acres to James Taylor. Bordered John Knight, Sarah Medlock, and the late Wm. Puckett. Deed T-81, 1867, has Nathan Pyles estate selling 55 1/4 acres to John H. Pyles. Land on the southwest side of Reedy River, on Reedy. Bordered Joseph B. Simmons, Wm. Mitchell, James A. Simmons, Thos. T. Taylor, and the estate of Thos. J. Sullivan. This same tract was resold as Deed S-49, 1870. J. H. Pyles sold 55 1/4 acres in Reedy watershed to Wm. L. Woods. Bordered widow Taylor, estate of Thos. J. Sullivan, and Joseph Simmons. In my opinion, Thos. Taylor's land seems to have been a mile or so southeast of Mt. Bethel Ch. ----- Original Message ----- From: <formy1@lycos.com> To: <SCLAUREN-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, April 23, 2006 10:16 AM Subject: [SCLAUREN] Medlock tintype from Laurens Co. 1. Re: [SCLAUREN] William Greenberry Taylor property
    2. Richard A. Lorenz
    3. Wm. Greenberry Taylor is in the 1850 and 1860 censuses, apparently born about 1820. Based on these census records and the following deeds, I believe that he lived in the vicinity of Mount Bethel Church, perhaps within a mile. Deed Book P, page 188, 1848, has Linney Pool selling 75 acres in the Reedy River watershed to Berryman Taylor. Borders Elisha Williams, Joseph Simmons, and Wm. Wood. Deed Q-136 has Nancy Pyles, John H. Pyles, John Bagwell, Dydamy Bagwell, and Isaac Hawkins selling 111 acres in Reedy River watershed to Berryman Taylor. The above property was sold again as Deed Y-3, 1883. Geo. P. Taylor, lessant ??, transferred his interest in 111 acres to brother Green Berry Taylor. Land was estate of father Berry Taylor and mother Mary Taylor. "The home place". Bordered W. L. Wood and James Stone. A second tract in this deed is referred to as "the widow Pyles place", and is 75 acres. This tract bordered W. L. Wood and Robert Siebert. The 1883 map shows a James Stone located a little more than a mile north of Mount Bethel Ch., and a Robert Siebert about 1/2 mile south of Mt. Bethel. W. L. Woods has several locations on the 1883 map. Deed Q-137, 1856, has Hugh Saxon selling ? "deed of interest" to Green Berry Taylor, 169 acres in Rabun Creek watershed. Borders Wm. Irby, John Yeargin, and J. A. Eigleberger. "Being the plantation where my mother Naomey Saxon ? resides, by virtue of a deed executed by my father Samuel Saxon to Dr. Hugh Saxon, dec.". (I do not know where this piece of land is located- RAL). Previous deeds for this property are the following, I believe. Deed M-151, 1830, has Wm. F. Downs and wife Clariss selling 169 acres in Rabun Cr. watershed to Sam Saxon. "conv. within by Chas. Saxon to said Downs. A plat is included in the record showing Wm. Irby and Wm. Johnson as bordering property owners. Deed M-152, 1830, has Sam Saxon and wife Oney selling 169 acres in Rabon watershed to Hugh Saxon. "Part of my father's old tract converted by Chas. Saxon to W. F. Downs and then to Samuel Saxon. Deed M-149, 1830, describes a property that was close to the above tract, I believe. Wm. Johnson sold 100 acres to James Johnson. Bordered Robert McNeese on the northwest, Sam Saxon on the north, Wm. Burton on the northeast, Isaac Ide ?? (Dial ??) on the east, Mima Jack Junior on the southeast, and Andy Henderson on the south and west. I believe that these Rabun Creek tracts were located about a mile southwest of Zion Church, possibly on the east side of North Rabun, less than 1/2 mile from the junction of North and South Rabun. Getting back to the Mt. Bethel Ch. location, especially Deed P-188 that mentions Joseph Simmons. He owned property adjacent to Mt. Bethel Ch. He might have owned property elsewhere, of course. Deed P114, 1849, has Wm. and wife Frances Mitchell deeding 11 1/4 acres to John G. Humbert, Elisha W. South, Greenberry Riley, and James M. Eppes, trustees. (I believe trustees of Mt. Bethel-RAL). Bordered Wm. and Frances Mitchell, Meth. Episc. Church South, and Joseph Simmons. Also connected with the Church, Deed P-115, 1849, has Wm. and Frances Mitchell selling 3/4 acre to John G. Humbert and others (Meth Episc. Church South). Borderd land deeded to Rebecca South. Deed Q-151 has Wm. Mitchell selling 1 1/2 acres to Elisha W. South. "Now leased to trustees of Mt. Bethel Church fo a camp meeting ground. Bordered south and west by the church, north by Joseph B. Simmons, and east by Wm. Mitchell. Church and graveyard out of Joseph B. Simmons". This same tract was sold again as Deed U-635, 1877. E. W. South sold 1 1/2 acres to J. B. Humbert, J. Epps, and W. D. Sullivan, trustees of Mt. Bethel Church. Bordered south and west by church, north by W. L. w\Wood, and east by Wm. Mitchell. ----- Original Message ----- From: <formy1@lycos.com> To: <SCLAUREN-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, April 23, 2006 10:16 AM Subject: [SCLAUREN] Medlock tintype from Laurens Co. 1. Re: [SCLAUREN] W. F. Medlock property location
    2. Richard A. Lorenz
    3. I did not finish my last submission because of a thunderstorm that was getting too close. I am confidant that the property in question (Deeds T-85, T-287, T-288, and U-634) are located about 1.5 miles east of Harmony Church. J. Kay, W. N. Andrews, and W. L. Wood are all shown on the 1883 map near the bottom of grid C3 (if you have the version of the 1883 map that I have marked with letters and numbers). The grid-marked version is available in a red-covered 3-ring notebook that I left for public use at the Laurens Co. library. The binder includes an index of people's names and an index of names of places shown on the 1883 map. Names of places that I encountered elsewhere are included, totaling about 600 places. The red-covered binder used to be readily visible on the top of a counter, but the last time that I was there it was filed on a shelf below a counter. There is a W. F. Madlock on this map in grid section E2, about 3 miles southwest of Greenpond, on the southwest side of South Rabun Cr. There are several Nash families nearby. ----- Original Message ----- From: <Aletajean49@cs.com> To: <SCLAUREN-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, April 17, 2006 3:35 PM Subject: [SCLAUREN] Silas Medlock > Cleburne, I'd like to encourage you to participate in the Medlock/Matlock > DNA > project. 2. Richard A. Lorenz
    3. Deed Book T, page 288, 1873, has Matilda Andrews selling 95 acres to W. F. Medlock. (Deed mentions daughter Mary Medlock). Borders W. N. Andrews, and John Kay. This same property is later resold as Deed U-634, 1877. W. T. Medlock sold 95 acres on a branch of Reedy River to W. L. Woods. Borders W. A. ? Andrews and John Ray ?. ( I don't know about the discrepancy between W. A. and W. N. Andrews). There are 2 other deeds that help to identify this property. Deed T-187, 1872, has Matilda Andrews selling 177 acres on west side of Reedy River to W. N. Andrews. Deed mentions her "homestead". Bordered east in part by Reedy River, lands of the east of T. J. Sullivan, dec., and John Kay. Deed T-85, 1872, has Emma Stone, Salera Tollerson, Jane Tayler, and Hura ? Kay selling 125 acres in Reedy watershed to W. L. Woods. Borders Matilda Andrews, Mary A. Taylor, and W. L. Woods. ----- Original Message ----- From: "C. W.
