Claude married Annie Belle Price. I have a copy of the 1900 Census for Greenwood Country SC which shows a John Stevens, Married to Jane. 2 daughters Stella and Florence, and a son Claud. The census reports that Jane had 9 children, six of which are still living. I would like to know more about John Stevens. Thank you, Barb

Surnames: Hosier Ketchum Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/YeB.2ACI/570 Message Board Post: Ansel Hosier, b. 1829, PA, brother of John Carly Hosier, I believe is my ggg grandfather. His daughter Lottie married Oscar Rickey and had Alice Alvira Rickey who marred Sam Jones. They in turn had my grandmother. I am confused about census records from 1880 that list Ansel's wife as Ovire and daughter as Lottie. I can find no other record of an Ovire but the 1860 census lists his whole family with his wife as Alvira. I was wondering if the name was horribly misspelled in the 1880 census. Since my great grandmothers middle name was Alvira this would make sense. I was just wondering if anyone had any info on Alvira Ketchum since she was married to him in 1860 and may likely be my ggg grandmother.

We think other daughters married Hipp and Neighbors men. James Patterson married Margaret Brown. James Neighbors married Mary Brown. James and Margaret Patterson and James and Mary Neighbors moved to Alabama some time before 1840. Their children, Andrew Jackson Patterson and Mary Ann Neighbors, married in Alabama and are my 3rd great-grandparents. We believe "our" James Patterson was at estate sales in Newberry Co. in 1822 and in 1834. A story passed down in the family says that James Patterson and Peggy Brown met on board a ship from Ireland to South Carolina, but census records indicate that both were born in South Carolina. However, either set of parents could have come from Ireland, I suppose, and met on the way. No proof has been found in either case. I have checked records at the SC Archives in Columbia, and made one trip to Laurens and Newberry counties to check records there. However, I was a relative novice and undoubtedly missed some records I should have looked at. I'm not really sure what resources are available in either county even today, but would plan to make another trip (from Colorado) if there are things I should look at that aren't available outside of SC. 1. RE: [SCLAUREN] Laurens Marriage Records
    2. Mickey Fournier
    3. South Carolina did not require marriage licenses (nor record marriages) until well after 1900. They considered marriage an affair for the Church, not the State. Very few Church records have survived. You will probably have to do what the rest of us have, depend on relationships mentioned in wills, deeds, etc. to prove the marriage even happened and you may never know exactly when. Brent Holcomb (and perhaps others) have published some books of "implied" marriages that he took from other official records but I am not sure if there is one for Laurens. 2. Marriage and Death Notices From the Up Country of South Carolina as taken from Greenville newspapers - 1826-1863 compiled by Brent Holcomb Index lists MacPherson, Berrien on page 21. Greenville Mountaineer....July 1833....The text actually reads..... At Savannah, on the 10th instant, the Hon. John MacPherson Berrien, to Eliza Cecil, eldest daughter of James Hunter, both of that city. I saw no other variant spelling and there are no Berrien surnames listed. Terry

    3. The Laurens County Library would likely have a book of marriage of the mid 1800s. However, all will not be included. Right now, I do not remember when everyone had to apply for a license at the Court Houses. If someone was married in church, the marriage was recorded there. So many early church records have been lost. I live in Greenwood, SC which is 28 miles from Laurens. We have a lot of books on Laurens and I will check in the books of marriage records section for Laurens County marriages. It may be later this week before I can get there.
