When researching my Robertson family in Pine Apple last year, I found the book, "Abstracts of Early Records of Laurens County South Carolina, 1785-1820." Using the index provided in the book, I found these records which I think refer to my ancestors, Nathaniel Robertson, William Robertson, Francis Robertson and Amanda Blakely Robertson. Nathaniel Robertson married Amanda Blakely in the area that is Laurens County, S. Carolina, and they had at least two sons, William and Francis. I am also very interested in the Daniel Wright,. who served as J.P., during the time these records were signed. I would like to know if this Daniel Wright eventually moved to Monroe County, Alabama. I live too far from South Carolina to research the actual records and have had miserable luck with hiring a professional genealogist, so I hope someone reading this will find names related to their ancestors and will write to me. I am deeply grateful for any help. Freda Roberson Noble, Gualala California From Book C-1: 355-112/19/1808 Sale of Wm Doraoh (/) estate. Names John Blakely, Wm Roberson, Nathaniel Roberson. Researching families of JOHN D MAHON and JOHN BOLT. JOHN BOLT's daughter Susan married JOHN MAHON. They apparently died between 1842-1850. In the 1850 census Bolt's has 3 Mahon children in his household. They are also named in his Will. He died 1854. The three children were: John D. Mahon Thomas B. Mahon Susan B. Mahon John D. Mahon moved on the Fairfield and Union Co were he died in 1910. He was born 1836. He married Rebecca Shedd (Durham) a widow of Joel Durham. Any one have Mahon info please contact me.
In the 1840 census, Andrew McKnight had 1 female in his household in the 0-5 year age bracket. The names of his children should be in the 1850 census, page 315, dwelling 1759. W. N. Andrews is shown on the 1883 map of Laurens Co., about 1.5 miles east northeast of Harmony Church. This is about 4 miles from where I believe Andrew McKnight lived. Deed T-287, 1872, shows a transfer of 177 acres on the west side of Reedy River from Matilda Andrews to W. N. Andrews. The only census records that I have for W. N. Andrews are the 1870 and 1880 censuses. ----- Original Message ----- From: Yogagolf@aol.com To: ralorenz@comcast.net ; SCLAUREN-L@rootsweb.com Cc: Yogagolf@aol.com Sent: Saturday, September 02, 2006 12:45 PM Subject: Re: [SCLAUREN] Andrew McKnight My database shows a Malissa Emily McKnight (1840-1929 and buried in Friendship Pres. I do not have any census records in Laurens Co. that I can connect with this person, but I do have 2 property records in my notes. Deed Book P, page 42, 1846, Newton Sims sold 240 acres in Simmons Cr. watershed to James Crawford. Borders Margaret Dunlap, east by Sam Fairburn and Dr. Thos. Teague, south by Dr. Thos. Teague, John L. Young, and James C. Young, and west by James Young. Deed Q-328, 1845, has John Newton Sims selling 4 acres to John L. and James C. Young. There is a plat included that shows Simmons Cr. to the west, Newton Sims on the north, Thos. Teague on the southeast, and J. L. and J. C. Young on the southwest. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Richard A. Ora Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church is located approximately six miles north of Laurens near the intersection of U. S. Highway 221 with State Highway 308. This church was organized around 1790. The earliest church records are lost so no definite date can be established, but the church is thought to be a few years older than the above date. The first worship service was conducted five hundred feet from the present location. The first name of this church was Madole's Old Field, The name was later changed to Warrior Creek in 1809 and then to Bethel in 1836. Many years later, by custom the church was called Ora for the nearby railroad station and village but the name was not officially made Ora until 1986. The origin of the name Ora is interesting. Prior to 1885 the community was known as Scuffletown. When the railroad was being extended from Laurens to Spartanburg, the little village of ScufBetown was in the path of the railroad. According to tradition, one of the railroad surveyors by the name of Tyler McDonald was asked by his company to consult the local residents for their approval of a shorter name than Scuffietown for the railway station and soon-to-be established postoffice. McDonald was in love with Miss Leora Hunter, a local maiden. He asked for her hand and for permission for a portion of her name for the railway station and community. The name Ora was in time accepted by all concerned. Ora A.R.P. Church is among the oldest churches in Laurens County. This church and the later-established Providence A.R.P. Church in the city of Clinton are believed to be the only A.R.P. churches in Laurens County..... " - Tim www.UpstateAncestry.com
