Linda: Thank you for giving the list a heads up on the Daniel(s) letters. Normally, rootsweb frowns on using the lists to sell items to prevent subscribers and the rootsweb computers from being overwhelmed by spam. I hope it is obvious to all that family items with Laurens Co., SC connections that are up for auction on ebay or any online auction are a clear exception. Should any of you spot Laurens Co., SC bibles, letters, diaries, manuscripts, marriage licenses, ledgers, photographs for sale you are encouraged to give the list a heads up. Linda, it was very thoughtful of you to take the time to forward that information to the list. It will be nice if a Daniel(s) descendant acquires the letters. As a Civil War antique, they will go high. The hard, cold reality is that families lose touch with each other, and older people die leaving behind children and grandchildren who just do not care about old family items. With any luck those items end up in the hands of collectors or dealers instead of in the city dump. People do not think to donate to libraries because they do not expect any one else to value the items either. Dealers who buy old estates can not be expected to turn around and donate to libraries. Plus, our nation's libraries would be groaning under the weight of all that unwanted stuff. Then along comes ebay, and *poof* family items can find their way home on a good day. On a bad day, the bid goes too high, and they go to another collector or dealer. The problem is that dealers and genealogists do not think the same way. Genealogists want everything "shared" (free is always best, isn't it?) and dealers want top dollar. As long as genealogists understand that when they step into the antique world, they will have to compete for what they want--it works out okay. If you are lucky enough to find a family item, decide how much you are willing to pay. Ebay is the best thing that has happened to me. I've been able to buy about four family items. Two of them date to the 1810's. However, finding something on ebay takes a bit of wading, so when one of your stumbles upon something and takes the time to forward that information on to everyone else, you deserve a big thank you for being so altrustic. Frankly, when I spot something for my own Laurens Co., SC folks--you won't be hearing from me until the fur stops flying!!! :) Have fun with both your research and your journeys through ebay land. We live in interesting times. Kathy Duncan list owner
The next quarterly (usually) revision of the Old Pendleton District Database cd will be mailed on 15 March 2001. All outstanding requests will be filled at that time. The OPD Database is a project of the Old Pendleton District Chapter/SCGS and is based on a single gedcom containing over 300,000 names of those who lived in the OPD (+ancestors+descendants). The OPD was comprised of the area now occupied by the 3 westernmost counties of SC. Adjacent counties are GA and NC in addition to SC. To see more about the OPDC/SCGS, see: http://oldpendleton.homestead.com/index.html To see more about the inexpensive OPD database cd, see: http://jrshelby.com/opdcd/ This cd project had prior approval by Rootsweb before its initiation.
Linda, Thanks for the information but as a policy I do not buy or sell family genealogical information or material on eBay. That to me is like buying and selling your heritage but I guess it speaks for the times and it does not speak well of them, either. Materials such as this should be donated to a college, library, historical society, etc and not bought and sold like cattle or a sack of peanuts. John R. Shirley, There are a bunch of HOLLANDS, many named Thomas, that are buried in Lauren County, SC and their burial records are on the Lauren County, SC website. However, there are none in the right time frame for a husband of Sarah Elizabeth RENEAU, who was born in 1838. I know that Sarah Elizabeth RENEAU, daughter of Rev. Russell RENEAU a Presiding Elder of the Georgia Conference of the Methodist Church, South, married Thomas P. HOLLAND on 5 Mar 1854. This was two years after her older sister married Robert W. DANIEL, one of the DANIELS from Daniels Plantation, Abbeville County, SC., who lived in Jefferson County, GA (near Augusta). I do not know where Thomas P. HOLLAND was from but Rev. RENEAU was then living in or around Atlanta, as best I can tell. He left the Methodist church for a couple of years 1853-55 and worked with his brother who ran a newspaper in Atlanta before rejoining the church and becoming a Presiding Elder in the Arkansas Conference in 1856. I have one child listed for Sarah in the Reneau-Richter Bible (c.1836) which I have in my possession. This Bible was the family Bible of Rev. Russell Reneau before it came into the family of John C. RICHTER of Madison, GA upon the death of Rev. RENEAU's wife, Elizabeth STOCKTON, in 1898. The only entry for Sarah Elizabeth RENEAU and Thomas P. HOLLAND is "Ella Alma Holland was born Dec. 31st, 1854" and no location was listed. I know that neither one of these two given names are RENEAU family names so they must be HOLLAND family names. Any help you might give is appreciated. Sarah was a great-grand aunt and I descend from her older sister, Mary Jane RENEAU and her husband, Robert W. DANIEL. The RENEAUS were originally from Jefferson County, TN. John R. It is difficult to tell from your posting what you know about the parents. The 1850 census suggests that Augustus, 15, was the son of James B. Higgins. My interpretation of census records is that a James B. lived near Lanford from 1810 to 1860. Don't know anything about James B's family except that there were a number of other Higgins living in the same vicinity from 1790 on. Richard Lorenz

I too have a question about one Adair branch.... James Adair b 8 May 1747 (or 8 Dec 1747) Bucks Co PA d 1831 Franklin Co IN m Rebecca Montgomery 1751-1835....(lived in Laurens Co SC) Does anyone have proof of THIS James Adair's parents?.... He was "reportedly proved to have been the son of Joseph Adair Sr, cooper, by the power of attorney issued by his brother Benjamin Adair (from Deed Bk G, p666?) I think this must refer to Joseph 1733-1812 and not James 1747-1831. Could James be son of Willam 1719-1782 m Mary Moore? I think James 1747-1831 is referred to James Adair "saddler"....and there is another James Adair Sr"cooper" whose wife was Elenor. All of this has always been a little confusing at least to me. Clark Sinclair
Does anyone have any "solid" information on the marriage of Joseph Adair and Sarah Dillard. Several researchers have cast significant doubt over whether any of the early Joseph Adairs had a spouse named Sarah Dillard, since the Dillards were from Virginia, while the Adairs came to SC from Lancaster Co., PA after 1764 (Lancaster deed records support this). Supposedly, that Adair line never lived in Virginia, and the Dillards didn't come to the Laurens County area of SC until after the Revolution, when Joseph would already have been married. Laurens County deed records identify Joseph Adair, Jr.'s spouse as Elizabeth (Unknown surname). They probably would have married in PA. There WAS a Joseph Adair of Laurens Co. whose wife was named Sarah, but her last name wasn't Dillard and he wasn't the son of Joseph, Sr. Supposedly, James Steven DILLARD, born about 1710 married Lucy WISE, possibly daughter of a Col. WISE. Bit, it has also been brought to my attention that, due to lack of evidence, there seems to be no such people as Lucy Wise and James Stephen Dillard. It has also been pointed out that middle names were rarely used during the early 1700's. No genealogical documentation (other than internet postings and such) has been found for these people, that I am aware of. If you have anything to support the existence of this couple, please share. I have both of these couples listed in my lineage, but when I began to search for "proof" to support these lines, I found none. Other researchers have done a pretty good job of proving that the information on Joseph ADAIR/Sarah DILLARD and James Steven DILLARD/ Lucy WISE is basically just conjecture. Please share your thoughts!?! Thanks so much! Fredreica [email protected]
