Researching John Black and his wife Sarah Conway Ewell Blair. They had a daughter Elizabeth Janet who married John S. Henderson and moved to Bartow Co. GA in 1851. Lynda Wilson
John Black's house and mill are shown on the 1820 / 1825 county map on the Little River (at Milton, I believe). My notes are that the estate of John Black was sold in a listing in Deed Book N, page 137, 1836. Sarah C. Black administrator. My notes are messy, but it looks like 886 acres that was bought by John D. Williams. The entry includes a map that shows location of neighbors. Deed Q-58, 1854, has a map of the same general area with the history of some of the land. Richard Lorenz

There is a "Mrs. P. Boyd estate" on the 1883 map about 3 1/2 miles southwest of Laurens Court House, about 1 1/2 miles northwest of New Prospect Church. Is this Pamela's property? I have Bradford and Pamela in my 1860 and 1870 census notes. Can anyone tell me where they lived in those years. Thanks, Richard Lorenz

It has been a while since I have posted this message, and I know that we do have some new people on the List, maybe you might know the "HODGES Family" that I am hunting. Leroy H. Hodges was born about 1806 in Laurens, SC, his first marriage was to a Permeli ?? she was from SC. Census show that Leroy was still in Laurens Co., Sc in the 1830's. In 1840 there was a L.H. Hodges in the Abbeville Co., census. In the 1860 census Leroy shows up in Jefferson Co., Alabama. We have a T H Hodges that might be a brother to Leroy and he went on to Texas very early. We have a Mary B. Hodges that we think that might be Leroy's mother, She was in Jefferson Co., Ala. in the 1860 census without a husband. She was 87, which mint she was born about 1773. We are undecided weather a Sherrod or a John was Leroy's brothers, but could be. We really would like to find Leroy H. Hodges's mother and father and any brothers or sisters that he might had had. Following is the obituary of my gg-gf, Andrew Jackson ALLISON, b. 1855, d. 1933, whose grandfather, John A., was born in Laurens in 1774 (more data below). I would dearly love to connect with other kin. OBITUARY OF ANDREW JACKSON ALLISON (1855-1933) "On the evening of November 10th at his home in Lusk, Texas, an old time Texan passed away. He was A. J. Allison. One of the Founders of the Republic of Texas, his father was one of the outstanding pioneers of the young nation called Texas. Mr. Allison was born April 9, 1855, in Williamson County, Texas. He grew up on the frontier and developed the strong and vigorous characteristics of manhood for which our early settlers were famous. As a lad he witnessed the Civil War and the tragic upheaval which it caused in our social and commercial life. At the age of 18 years, he joined the Baptist Church and he was an earnest and consistent Christian until the day of his death. He was upright and kindly, reminding one of the splendid men who made the world a safe place for us to abide. He was generous hearted. In the early days the passing wayfarer was always a welcome guest within his gates. He fed hundreds of hungry and destitute during his life and no man ever asked a reasonable favor at his hands but that it was granted if within his power. He lived the life of the prophet beside the road where the races of men go by. And the men who passed his way were better because they had met and known him. In his going the State has lost an upright citizen, the community a splendid neighbor, mankind a generous friend, and his family a loving husband and father. May the peace of God comfort those who mourn and glorify the memory of the noble spirit which has departed the walks of the earth." "He is survived by his wife, Mrs. A. J. Allison [Sarah Alice REVEAL(E)], to whom he had been married fifty-nine years; Four daughters, Mrs. Ethel Pratt of Jean; Mrs. Edna Barnes of Ranger; Mrs. Ollie Mills of Lusk; and Mrs. Mattie HARLING of Woodson. One son, [Irl Fonzo] ALLISON of Casa Grande, Arizona also survives him. He was laid to rest in the Woodson Cemetery on the evening of November 11th in the presence of a great throng of friends. Reverend Galloway preached the funeral service, and the Kiker-Thompson undertaking establishment had charge of the interment." Genealogy Notes: 1. Andrew was the 11th child of JAMES A. ALLISON (b. 1810 TN/ALA) and DELILAH HOWARD (b. 1812), who, along with JAMES A.'s parents, JOHN A. ALLISON (b. 1774 SC) and ANNA CRESWELL, and JAMES A.'s two brothers, ELIHU CRESWELL (b. 1808 ALA) and WILLIAM F. (b. 1800 SC) and their respective wives and children, arrived in Houston County, Texas in 1835 from Tennessee via Arkansas. JAMES A. and WILLIAM F.. fought in the Texas Revolution. JAMES A. and ELIHU C. and families removed to Williamson County, Texas, by 1847. After Texas seceded from the Union, they enlisted in the Confederacy, as did all three brothers' sons who were of age. Two of James A.'s sons, JAMES, JR. and ELIHU C. II, died during the War. The ALLISONs came from Lanarkshire, Scotland, to Virginia by abt. 1635. They were later in Laurens Co., South Carolina, but removed to Hardeman Co., Tennessee about 1800, then to Texas by early 1835. 2. Andrew Jackson ALLISON's wife was Sarah Alice REVEAL(E), b. 5/22/1859, Bell County, Texas; d. 10/28/1943, Woodson, Throckmorton Co., Texas. They were married in 1874 in Davilla, Milam County, Texas. Their children who predeceased Andrew were: James Frederick; Carrie; Lora Iradell; Willie Jewel and Nettie. 3. All but the last paragraph of the obit was written by John Lee Smith, an attorney who llater served several terms as a State Senator and Lieutenant Governor of the State of Texas. There is a biography of Mr. Smith in the Handbook of Texas Online.
