Your Charles in 1850 and a bunch of other Neills lived near Hopewell Ch. There was also a large Johnson family that lived near Hopewell. The Johnsons in Jacks Township were a different "clan". Richard Lorenz

Cheryl, Don't know if this helps, but from a book I have it states: "Survey for John Owens pursuant to precept dated 6 Aug 1771; 250 acreas in Berkley County on waters of Cain Creek. Bounded on all sides by vacant land. Survey certified 17 Aug 1771 Pa. Cunningham, D.S. [P19-18:2]" This is a book by Jesse and Margaret Motes on Laurens & Newberry Counties 1749-1775. If you don't have it, I can dig around in it a little more tomorrow (Sunday). Shirley ************ >I have been looking at deed records and found some that look like the John >Owens properties. I have been looking at deed records and found some that look like the John Owens properties. It seems that his son Robert eventually "collected" his brother's and father's lands. #1. John gave 100 acres to wife Mary which would then go to son Daniel. In Deed Book N, page 63, 1834, Robert Owen bought 100 acres from Daniel's estate, located in the Enoree River watershed. Could be the same land. #2. John gave 100 acres to son Thomas on west side of Allison Creek. Allison flows from Hurricane Church to Duncan Creek about a mile below Duncan Cr. Church. In Deed Book N, Page 67, 1834, Robert Owen purchased land from Thomas Owens estate. On Duncan Creek watershed, which includes Allison Cr. No acreage recorded in my notes. Could be same land. #3. John willed his Land Grant of 214 acres to son Daniel. Deed Book N, page 64, 1834, shows that Robert purchased 214 acres from the estate of Daniel Owens. The deed describes this land as being on the South Fork of Duncan Creek. The Union County Land Grant Maps show John Owen's land grant on the main Duncan Creek watershed about 1 mile west of Sardis Church, and 1 mile north of modern highway 72. I think we are talking about the same piece of land, but I do not know what the error is in the location descriptions. I have not run across any records for Robert Owen selling any of his land. It would help (as always) if you could give some approximate dates. Rudds lived in the southern part of the county and an Armstrong family lived nearby. Some Armstrongs lived near Dials Church in the northern part of the county. Robertsons lived mostly in the northern part of the county. Richard Lorenz

SC Queries Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/SC/Laurens/10252 Surname: MATHIS, MATHEWS, MATTHEWS ------------------------- I have not given up on finding where in SC my Mathis family came from, but I'm close...... James MATTHEWS (or other spellings) was b. 14 Oct 1814 in SC, moved to Forsyth Co GA by 1840 and died there in 1879.Any document that should have listed birth county in SC (cival war registration etc) was left blank, so I have the whole state to cover. I have found other Mathis/Matthews/Mathews families close by also from SC, anyone searching for these surnames that left SC between 1840-1860???
Thanks for posting the will. I'm sure they must tie into my Holland and Owens, but they are one generation farther back than I have gone. I have a David OWENS, b. 1806 SC married to Narcissa HITT, b. 1808 SC (probably sister to Rebecca HITT). I have 8 children's names that they had. I also have a Rachel P. HOLLAND, b. 1805 SC, d. 15 JUN 1857 Laurens Co. who married Ephraim PITTS, b. 1800 SC. I have 5 of their children's names. Can you tie my ancestors to this will in any way? Thanks, Shirley

There was a Rudd family that lived near White Plains Ranch, not far from Cross Hill in the southern part of the county. The first census record I have in my notes is T. A.? in 1850, age 32. There was an Anthony later, and Armstrong Rudd owned land there. There were also Reeds in the area and the names can be confused. Richard Lorenz
The next quarterly (usually) revision of the Old Pendleton District (SC) Database cd will be mailed on 15 June 2001. All outstanding requests will be filled at that time. The OPD Database is a project of the Old Pendleton District Chapter/SCGS and is based on a single gedcom containing over 300,000 names of those who lived in the OPD (+ancestors+descendants in most states and several countries). The OPD was comprised of the area now occupied by the 3 westernmost counties of SC. Adjacent counties are in GA and NC in addition to SC. See map at http://jrshelby.com/opdcd/opd.jpg To see more about the OPDC/SCGS, see: http://oldpendleton.homestead.com/index.html To see more about the inexpensive OPD database cd, see: http://jrshelby.com/opdcd/ (Revised 4/26/2001) A new option on this revision of the cd is being able to search/view/print the database completely from the cd without copying or installing anything. All the usual options are still available. This cd project had prior approval by Rootsweb before its initiation.
