I'm attempting to learn the connection between the Richland/Kershaw County Higgins family and the ones in Laurens County. Benjamin, of Richland (ca 1753-1824) lived in Richland; one son (James B.) went to Laurens, most of the rest of the siblings stayed in Richland. James m. Hannah Higgins, son of a William (ca 1740-1820). I'd like to know how this William connects to Benjamin. Could Wm. and Benj. have been brothers? Cousins? Any ideas out there? >From a notice in my Civil War Preservation Trust newsletter, Hallowed Ground: Saturday, June 23, 8 p.m. The History Channel will air a new program about Civil War battlefield preservation. "Save Our History: Civil War Battlefields" includes interviews with Civil War Preservation Trust personnel and preservationists around the country. It highlights endangered battlefields from Gettysburg to Vicksburg. Thought this might be of interest to those of us whose ancestors fought for the glorious cause. (Pardon the multiple sendings, but I want to make sure all those who are interested would be made aware of this.) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Researching: (1) Porter, McCants, Cobb, Martin, Rawlinson, Gill, Higgins, Scott, Harrison, Fetner; (2) Bryant, McDade, Dillard, Tolleson, Wells, Baxter, Eaves; (3) Kinard, Wise, Thaxton, Vickers, Patton, Hubbard, Wilkins, Long/Lang, Latta (Branch 28), Mauldin, Dismukes. SC Queries Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/SC/Laurens/10290 Surname: Hunter, Simpson, Smith ------------------------- John Hunter (1732-1802) wife's name was Sarah Smith. They were married in Ireland. After John's death Sarah married John Simpson (1751-1815). Sarah died in 1836. John Hunter, Sarah Smith Hunter Simpson, John Simpson, and John Simpson's first wife Mary, are all buried in the Little River Church Cemetery located near the Laurens/Newberry County line. I have no information on Sarah Smith's parents. John Hunter was a U.S. Senator from SC 1796-1798. He was also a U.S. Representative from SC 1793-1795. There is much conflicting information around on the Laurens County Hunter families. Some sources have his birth date as 1760, but that doesn't fit well with his grave marker that says age 70. [Although one report says that the grave marker gives his age as 50, in 1802.] The above is my best estimate of the correct dates. Dave Hanna Georgetown, Texas

State of NC to Zebulon Savage 194 A on Pruitts Fork of Hogans Creek adj. Widdow Savage, James Martin, John Thompson, Aaron Arnold. Nov. 8, 1784. Book C, page 36. I, Elizabeth Savage, widdow of William Savage, Sr. hath sold...my thirds share of above tract. Samuel Watt Jr., Thomas Savage, Robert Duncum, John Hamilton, Robt. Craig. Note: Is is possible that Zebulon, William, and Thomas were sons of Elizabeth and William Savage, Sr. and that John was a son to Zebulon? It would be nice if we could find a will for this William Savage, Sr. Book B, page 237. Thomas Redin to William Washington for 65 pds. 80 acres adj. William Savage, Samuel Watt. March 1, 1787. Chas. Zebidee Savage. Aug. 27, 1794. ===== In a book about Laurens Co. SC Deed Abstracts, I found the following: Thomas Savage and wife Ginney of Franklin Co. GA to William Washington for 90 lbs. str., 37 acres bordering on Zebulon Savage, John Duncan, Wm. Obannon. Wit: Wm. Owings, Zebulon Savage, Ruben Yager, Ruben Nash. (1799) Note: I believe this same William Washington owned land adjacent to the Savages in Rockingham Co. NC. ===== Below is a summary of the Laurens/Abbeville Savages: (1) Thomas Savage, born in the 1750s was in Laurens County in 1790. His wife at the time was Ginny ___. They lived on land just north of the Saluda River, probably near the present-day community of Princeton. The land bordered land owned by Zebulon Savage. Thomas sold his land to William Washington in 1799 and moved to Franklin Co. GA. By 1830, Thomas and family had moved to Hall Co. GA. I believe this is the same Thomas Savage who married Jane Taylor on 10 Jun 1775 in NC. He was a soldier in the NC line in the Revolutionary War. Thomas died in Hall Co. GA on 1 May 1839. Thomass youngest son was named Zebedee. (Ginny is a nickname for Jane). (2) Zebulon Savage, Sr., born in the 1750s was listed in the Laurens Co. Census of 1790 as Zebulin Sawing. He lived near Thomas Savage who was about the same age. I believe they were brothers. Zebulon Savage, Sr. remained in Laurens Co. until his death. He died sometime before 1810. (3) Zebulon Savage, born in NC about 1780 first appears in the Laurens Co. Census of 1800. Zebulon and family remain in Laurens Co. until about 1841 when they moved to Tuscaloosa Co. AL. Zebulon died in Tuscaloosa Co. in 1862. Zebulons first wife was named Rebekah Cox. His second wife was named Elizabeth Pinson. Zebulon had the following children: Wesley, Wiley, James, William, Starling, Pendleton, Sarah, Rebecca, Mary, Virginia, Elizabeth, Lucy, Dianna, Catherine, and Emma. I believe this Zebulon Savage was the son of Zebulon Savage, Sr. (4) William Savage was born in NC in the 1780s. He first appears in the Laurens Co. Census of 1810. He was living next to the Zebulon Savage who later moved to Tuscaloosa Co. AL. I believe the William and Zebulon were brothers. William and family moved to Abbeville Co. SC by 1830. By 1840, they had moved to St. Clair Co. AL. Williams wife was Nancy ___. Their children were Linda, Mary, John, Gallington, Drucilla, Zebulon, and Jane. William died in St. Clair Co. in 1851. ===== The line could go this way (this is a reach!): Generation 1: William Savage, born abt. 1720s and wife Elizabeth. Generation 2: Zebulon Savage, born abt. 1750s (may have brothers named Thomas & William) Generation 3: William Savage, born abt. 1780 and wife, Nancy. (may have brother named Zebulon) Generation 4: John Savage, born abt. 1807 and wife, Rebecca. ===== Rockingham Co. NC is just across the border from Pittsylvania Co. VA. Rockingham is bordered by Guilford Co. NC. My guess is that these Savages may have been in VA before NC. Ken Slade [email protected]

SC Queries Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/SC/Laurens/10286 Surname: RODGERS, HUNTER, ABERNATHY, HUNT, EVELEIGH, EVERLEIGH, RUTLEDGE, YOUNG, SAXON, CRUMPTON, DAVIS ------------------------- In lieu of a simple "I don't know," I will give you what could qualify as the most round-about, vague answer you've ever heard to a simple question. Your question was: Do you know if there is a Rodgers family connection to the Eveleigh, Abernathy and Hunt families? Here's my answer: (1) I (thanks to others' work which they have shared) can connect a Rodgers family of Laurens Co. with a Hunter family of Laurens Co.; (2) I can connect the Abernathy family of Newberry Co. with the Hunter family of Newberry Co.; (3) I can connect the Abernathys of Newberry Co. with the Hunts of Newberry Co., (4) I do not know at this time if the Hunters of Laurens Co. connect with the Hunters of Newberry Co., (5) I know nothing about the Eveleigh/Everleigh family except that Nicholas Eveleigh/Everleigh "of Edgefield" is mentioned in the 1763, 1764, and 1786 land deals recorded in Laurens Co. referring to tracts of land called "The Horse Shoe." (1) According to Dan Crumpton ([email protected]), Tabitha "Tabbie" Rodgers married John Hunter (1768-1835) of Laurens Co. in 1788. Tabbie was the daughter of William (and Frances) Rodgers who wrote his will in 1799. Witnesses were R. L. Rodgers, John Saxon and Luke Crumpton. John Hunter "became Judge of Superior Court and maintained a home in Charleston, as well as a large plantation in Laurens Co....he owned the best horses and saddle gear in the state." Only one child, daughter Zelpha, lived to adulthood; she married John H. Crumpton of Greenville in 1806. Dan's references include Charleston Gazette Dec.1, 1806 and "Colonial Families of the Carolinas" (pp. 31-35). (2) Two sons of Nathan Hunter, Sr. and Mary Young of Newberry Co. SC married Abernathy sisters (daughters of John Abernathy who married Rhoda Davis in 1775 in Newberry Co. SC). I can name names, if anyone is interested. (3) John and James Abernathy (brothers) of Newberry (Old 96 District) appeared in the 1790 census. Their father died when they were still children. Their mother Elizabeth married Michael Hunt who came to SC from NC before the Am. Rev. John and James and Michael Hunt are mentioned in a Laurens Co. land deal when John and James were still children. Elizabeth died in 1797 in Newberry, we think, but we don't know where she is buried (nor her son John). John's widow (Rhoda Davis Abernathy) is buried at Macedonia Primitive Baptist Cemetery in Chambers Co. AL. (4) Valeria Wigington ([email protected]) is not aware of a link between the Hunters of Laurens Co. and the Hunters of Newberry Co. She descends from Nathan Hunter, Sr. and Mary Young of Newberry Co. who are buried at an Associate Reformed Presbyterian Cemetery in Newberry Co. SC. "...doubt if related....There were Hunters here long before Nathan came." I do not yet know if John Hunter (1768-1835), planter of Laurens Co. and Superior Court Judge, was related to John Hunter (1760-1802) "of Laurens Co." who served as a U. S. Senator from SC in the 1790's (buried in Newberry Co. at Little River Cemetery, 14 miles west of Newberry, SC). Can someone confirm or deny that they were related? Who was John Hunter who died in 1825 on Horseshoe Plantaion SC (and where is that)? (5) nothing + nothing = nothing much / nothing much = Nicholas Eveleigh "of Edgefield" was a planter in 1763 / I would like to know if the EVELEIGHs were Quakers. Thank you for the info. (new to me) that my ancestor John Abernathy was executor of the estate of N. Eveleigh in 1793 (when John was in his mid-30's). I welcome corrections and comments. Mary in TX

SC Queries Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/SC/Laurens/10284 Surname: Rodgers, Hollingsworth, Franks, Caldwell ------------------------- I don't know if Horseshoe Plantation is the same as the Horseshoe land mentioned in Laurens Cty in 1763. I assume you have seen Laurens Deed B 55 in 1786 when Andrew Rodgers, Jr. sold two Horseshoe tracts to Nicholas Eveleigh. It refers to the 1763 land survey for the Abernathys and Hunt. The property was on the North side of the Saluda River. Deed D 316 in 1793 mentioned that John Abernathy, exor of estate of N. Eveleigh, sold the land to Edward Rutledge. Do you know if there is a Rodgers family connection to the Eveleigh, Abernathy and Hunt families? Do you know which Andrew Rodgers, JR sold the property in 1786? Which Rodgers in Laurens are you researching?

--=======7E3C5E03======= Content-Type: text/plain; x-avg-checked=avg-ok-4EFC32DD; charset=us-ascii For those of you in the area, the 2nd Reunion of the Descendants of Thomas and William Campbell McNeill will be held at Lebanon Presbyterian Church in Abbeville Co on Saturday, June 16th beginning at 10:30. We will have a business meeting and then lunch in the social hall. Plenty of time for socializing and visiting the final resting places of the ancestors who are buried at Lebanon and at Sharon UMC cemetery about a mile away. Thomas McNeill came to America from Killyglen Townland, Grangekillglen, Co Antrim, Ireland with his wife Margaret McWilliams and 5 children in 1846. They had 5 more children in America before the death of Margaret in 1858. He then married Rachel Charles and had 2 more children before her death in 1861 whereupon he married Rachel's sister, Rebecca and had 2 more children before she died in before his death in 1879. Thomas's brother, William Campbell McNeill, I came to America in 1852 after the death of their father, Andrew McNeill and their mother Elizabeth McCombs in Ireland. He brought with him his wife Jane and 4 children. Only one, William Campbell Jr married and he married 1st Isabella Knox and 2nd Fannie Ophelia Palmer. There were also marriages into the Wilson, Fortescue, Woodhurst, Edwards, Walker, Frith and Greer families of Anderson, Abbeville, Greenville and surrounding areas. Please come join us as we get together to meet new cousins and renew ties with 'old' cousins. Bring a well filled picnic basket. Drinks, plates and utensils will be provided.
