SOUTH CAROLINA I William Pitts of the District and state aforesaid being of sound and disposing LAURENS DISTRICT mind and memory but weak in body and calling to mind the uncertainly of life and being desirous to dispose of all such worldly Estate as it hath please God to bless me with so make and ordain this my last will in manner following that is to say, 1st I Give to my wife Sally Forty acres of the tract of land that I now live on the part that the dwelling house & land in and one Bed and furniture during her natural life time and at her Death it is my will that the land should belong to my son Reuben Griffin and I give to my son William Pitts two Dollars and I give to my son Daniel Pitts two Dollars and I give to my Daughter Nelly Frasher Two Dollars and I give to my son David twenty acres of the tract of land that I now love on in the corner of the tract above his house and I Give to my son Jesse J. my negro boy Henry and should Jesse J. die without any heir then I desire the negro should be sold and the money Equally divided betwix my sons Thomas ! and John and I Give to my son Thomas my negro boy named Ralph and should Thomas die without any heir then I desire that the negro should be sold and the money be Equally divided betwix my sons Jesse J. & John and I Give to my son John my negro woman Milicea [?] and should John die without any heir then I desire that the negro should be sold and the money be Equally divided betwix my sons Jesse J. & Thomas and all the balance of my Estate be sold and all my Just Debts paid and if their be any Remainder that it should be Equally divided betwix my several children namely William, Daniel, Nella, David, Reuben Griffin, Jesse J. , Thomas & John and lastly I do constitute and appoint my friend John Boult Esq. my Executor of this my last will and testament in testimony whereof I have hereunto set my land and seal this twenty fifth day of April one Thousand and Eight hundred and Thirty Eight. He soon settled in Laurens Co., South Carolina. January 6, 1773: William McMurty was listed among the persons who lately arrived from Ireland into this province [South Carolina] in the ship "Lord Dunluce" presented petitions for warrants of survey agreeable to their Respective Family Rights. July 19, 1797: William McMurtey Senr. and wife Mary sold to Richard Puckett Junr. for £5 sterling, 100 acres on Cane Creek part of a grant to Christopher Parsons. Jim, Do you have anything on an Ann(a) Sims married to Michael McGee, late 1700s? They lived in this same area, at various times in Laurens & Abbeville Counties. Last evening and again this evening I took out a map of SC and looked at the point near the Saluda and Reedy Rivers where the Sims lived. For the first time I really had a sense of where the family lived. I would like to take and trip and see the lands there to get some sense of what it was like to live there circa 1800. My Mothers family is from the Wood / Edmund Learwood family of Laurens Co. I believe that in 1800 / 1810 they were located near Ware Shoals. >From my census notes I believe that this family lived near Bethlehem Church which is 3 or 4 miles above the confluence of the Saluda and Reedy Rivers. Joel Sims is in the 1810 census and lived in that general vicinity. Absolom Boba donated? some of his land for the Bethlehem Ch. John Creasy in 1810 also lived in that general vicinity. As for the Pughs, Jesse Pugh lived there in 1810. John Sims lived between Abs. Bobo and Jesse Pugh in 1810. Richard Lorenz

I descend from Zachariah Sims who died about 1789 in Laurens Co. He was originally from Culpeper Co., Va and was a son of Thomas Sims Sr. (b1702). From older relatives I understand that he lived along the Saluda River. Confirmaion, however weak, comes in the form of a description of another persons land which cites a corner of Zachariah Sims along the Saluda River. His widow married a Dr. Jonathan Creecy, related in-laws were the Lewis Graves and Absolom Bobo families. His daughters married into the Pugh family. His son Joel (my lineage) married a dau. of David McGlathery (McGladrie). For a family living on the Laurens Co. side of the Saluda would there be records in adjoining counties? Is the river of such size that families would tend to go to church etc. only on one side? Jim Sims
