I had trouble locating my husband's Civil War ancestor, knew he had lost a leg, but no record in SC. Lewis (Pegleg Luke)Faile (1840-1922) was visiting relatives in MS when the war broke out and he enlisted down there. I would have bet he had never been out of the county, he was born and died in Lancaster Co. He did file in SC for an artificial limb. So keep looking for those records in unexpected places. -- L. L.
