    3. Sorry, but Sherman's troops (came through Lancaster in February 1865) burned all the wills and equity court papers. The Ordinary (now Probate Judge) had piled these papers into wagons and was on his way to hide them at Haile Gold Mine when he was intercepted. It was a stupid decision because, although Federals attempted to burn the courthouse they did not succeed. The result is that Clerk of Court's papers, including all the land deeds, still survive. The only way Blair's 1826 will could have survived is if a second copy was handed down to his heirs. Louise Pettus
