    1. Re: [SCLANCAS] Roll call -- TYNES and maybe BROWN, ca 1800
    2. Mark James
    3. I am researching the family of Samuel TYNES (also spelled TINES), who moved to what was then St Marks Parish in about 1774. The following year he joined, with his brother Fleming, a pro-Revolutionary "Vallanteer Company of Horse" headed by Matthew SINGLETON; but in 1780 he switched sides and fought for the British as a colonel. In his only two major engagements, his unit was badly defeated by Francis Marion and his brigade. After the war, he continued to appear in census, land and court records in Lancaster, Sumter and Kershaw Districts, until 1797. I presume that's when he died. The 1800 census shows heads of household named Mary TINES and Francis TYNES, presumably Samuel's widow and son, but that's just a guess. The TYNES surname never seems to show up again in Lancaster District. I don't know whether this is because they all moved away, or because General Sherman got to their records before I did. By 1830, there are TYNESes in Fairfield and Richland Districts; there is some evidence, not conclusive, that they may be Samuel's descendants. Other such candidates appear in Greene County, Alabama, and Tazewell County, Virginia. Families with which Samuel TYNES is associated include BROWN, FREE, JENNINGS, BRUMFIELD, JAMES, TERRY, and COLLINS. Of these, only BROWN seems to have a connection with Lancaster District; two of Samuel's possible children may have married BROWNs. -- Mark James <tmarkjames@yahoo.com> __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!?
