James Wesley Collins (b. 14 Jul 1836, York Co., SC; d. 20 Mar 1923, Evinston, FL [while visiting his son, Clarence]) resided in York County; moved to Lancaster Co. at some point between 1870 and 1880 (see Censuses below). From Dept. of Army, Office of the Adjutant General, 24 March 1949, to James T. Richardson, Atlanta Ga.: “The records show that James W. Collins, a private of Company H, 12th Regiment South Carolina Infantry, Confederate States Army, enlisted 17 June 1863 at Camp Lee, Virginia. The company muster roll for November and December 1864, last on file, shows him present. Union prisoner of war records show that he was captured at Petersburg, Virginia, 2 April 1865, and imprisoned at Point Lookout, Maryland, where he was released 26 June 1865 upon taking the oath of allegiance to the United States. His place of residence is stated as York District, South Carolina."
