This is such a neat question. I'd invite my gr-gr grandfather Lemual Albert Phillips and my gr-gr-grandmother Belle. I would ask all sorts of questions-where did you meet and marry? Were you happy all of your lives? How did the Civil War change your lives? Why did you leave Lancaster Cty and move to Monroe County Tennessee? So many questions and so few answers. I would love to invite Hosea Scott (1811-1890) for Thanksgiving dinner. Perhaps he would clarify who his parents and siblings are. He was a brother to Timothy Stroud and Marion Hopkins(?). They were indentured to a Douglas family till the youngest came of age and then they returned to the Scott Plantation(?). What tragedies befell their mother? Who was his father. His only son was William Murdock Scott. Happy Thanksgiving and blessing to all.
Penny, What a nice and generous offer! No, I haven't been to either. My Pettus ancestors came down from Hanover County, VA. Unfortunately, that court house was burned during the Civil War. I do have questions about Capt. George Pettus who was born in 1753 and died in 1816. The only Revolutionary War mention of a George Pettus that I have been able to find is: "Capt Pettis" Is this George L. Pettus, b. 1753, Hanover County, Virginia? Draper MSS, Thomas Sumter Papers 10 V V 74-78 Revolultionary War Pension Application of Dan Alexander, Hardeman Co., Tenn. "Declarant a minute man, volunteered in 1778 under General Irwin and Capt. William ("Black") Alexander, guarded a magazine in Charlotte with Capt. Thomas Alexander, death of Capt. Gilly Falls at Ramsour¹s Mill; served with Captain Pettis, Capt. Martin Pfeifer, Captain Wheatdon against Tories; joined Gen [Horatio] Gates near Camden; description of appearance of the latter and Maj. William R. Davie; retreated to Charlotte; remembers Gen. Sumter, Gen. Rutherford, Gen. Davidson, Gen. Pickens; fought at Hart¹s Hill with Col. McCall. 5 pp., May 26, 1834" Note: All officers mentioned, with the exception of Gen. Horatio Gates were from the two Carolinas, mostly North Carolina. - --Capt. George Pettus was in Mecklenburg Co., NC by 1781. In 1788 he will marry Jane Knox of Mecklenburg Co. and, in her name, inherit 1500 acres of land from her father, Samuel Knox, that was located in the Catawba Indian Land in York County. BUT, I have also found an Elizabeth and a Catherine and a George Pettus living in York County, SC who were born in the time period of 1781-1786. As far as time and place, these three could be the children of Capt. George Pettus by an earlier marriage but I have no evidence to link them. I really don't have evidence that the "Capt," which is on his tombstone, was earned in the Rev. War or perhaps as a captain of militia in York county or Mecklenburg. This George Pettus was son of Stephen Pettus, Jr. and Anne Dillard. You're going to be sorry you offered to search for me! What a wonderful topic! My guest would be my great-grandmother Nancy M. Belk. She is the keeper of many, many family mysteries. Her husband, Lawrence Dunlap died a couple of days after the Battle of Gettysburg where he was injured. Nancy collected pension on him until she died. I have all the documentation on this. Nancy had four children after he died and she gave all of them the name of Dunlap.... one of these kids was my grandfather. I have not found documentation that she remarried, even on her death certificate, it stated she is the widow of Lawrence. I did find in the 1870s or 1880s she purchased property and one of the witnesses to the purchase was Lewis Dunlap. I haven't found a Lewis Dunlap anywhere in the area or Waxhaw, NC. My grandfather's middle name is Lawrence, and ironically he named one of his son's Lewis. Nancy moved to Rock Hill in 1900, the same time my grandfather did. My grandmother and grandfather separated in the 19teens... Grandma wrote in her bible that he died when they separated. But my father saw him a couple of years afterwards. Other Lancaster cousins, saw my grandfather in the early 1920s. We have no idea what happened to my grandfather... so Nancy could really answer a lot of questions if we had her for dinner. BTW, old Nancy Crockett (Dunlap historian) told me about 10 years ago, "If there were four illegitimate Dunlaps in Lancaster County, I would know about it. And there wasn't any!" So it leaves a lot to the imagination. I have often wondered if Lawrence really did die in the ACW or not. Was he the mysterious Lewis Dunlap? If not, who is the father of Nancy's last four children. Also where did my grandfather go after separating with my grandmother? I would also like to know what was her relations with Samuel Robinson, her neighbor. Nancy and her children inherited some personal belongings from the man. She also purchased several of his personal affects at auction, including his family bible after his death. Nancy Belk Dunlap, truly a woman of mystery of Lancaster County! I'd invite Drury Watson (1740-1829) to my Thanksgiving dinner. Drury Watson was born in Prince Edward Co. Va in 1740. He came to live with his daughter Susannah and her husband, James McKnight Morrow, at an unknown date but it is known that the Morrows were living on Six Mile Creek in Indian Land by 1788. Watson was in Lancaster County at least by 1804 as shown by court records. Drury might have some war stories to tell. He was a lieutenant in the Virginia militia in 1779-80. But, since he was known far and wide as a great fiddler and dancer, I suspect that on a festive occasion like Thanksgiving he might break out the fiddle and favor the assembled group with a tune or two. I would invite my 6th Great Grandfather, Casper Bleiler (Plyler) who came over from Switzerland and settled in Pennsylvania and his children later moved to the North and South Carolina area. He started out with his wife Maria and 3 children. He arrived in America with only the 3 children. It would make for an interesting Thanksgiving dinner. And yes, Sheryl, he is the 4th Great Grandfather of the Molsey (ie) Plyler that married your Samuel Rowell. I would love to have any information about your Samuel Rowell. Bill, Thank you so very much. I know very little about Belle, it is said that her sister married a Belk, they founded the Belk department stores. Family tales. Albert was born in Lancaster County to Robert Phillips and Susannah ? not the Phillips/Deason line. The time frame is 1840-1900, Albert Phillips served with the Lancaster Invincibles along with his brother Robert J.Phillips. Taken from the Widow's pension application:Mrs. Belle Phillips made the following statement under oath: That her residence was Rafter, Monroe, County, Tennessee since 1868. That she was born on February 14, 1834, that her maiden name was Belle Henson. That she married Lemual Albert Phillips in Lancaster County, So.Carolina on the first Sunday in July 1854. That her husband was born in Lancaster County, S.C. on July 27, 1835. That he enlisted in the Spring of 1861 in Company H, 2nd S.C. Regiment; that he served four years and surrendered at Greensboro , N.C. that he died on September 11, 1907. that their children were: John Phillips age 50, Susan Young, age 49, M.J. Phillips, deceased, Noah Philips, age 40, Nannie (Nancy) Brown, age 37, and Floyd Phillips, age 36. The Application was accepted. We don't know the maiden name of Susannah-some say it was Baxter, but I can't find any evidence either way.
