In the SC census of 1800, there were two men named William Jones, both over age 45, living in Barnwell, some distance apart. One William Jones, over age 45, had a wife Sarah or Sally. I believe that they are the couple who moved to Amite Co MS ca 1808, and left many identifying records there. The other William Jones, who is usually recorded as "saddler," had a wife Rebecca. Next door to him [and on adjoining lands] lived younger Jones men: Nathaniel Jones, Josiah Jones, and John Jones. This group lived on lands described as "on Little Saltcatchers," or "on Sykes Creek," or "on Three Runs" Earlier records show that William Jones, saddler, and wife Rebecca sold land in the area of Anson Co NC which fell into SC when the state line was run. The land on Camp Creek seems to have fallen into present day Lancaster Co, between the town of Lancaster and the Catawba Indian Land [Waxhaws]. Josiah Jones, for whom no Barnwell land sales are indexed, moved to Clarke Co AL by 1808. Any info on William Jones, the saddler, and his wife Rebecca, and on the younger men Josiah Jones, John Jones, and Nathaniel Jones will be greatly appreciated. I'm looking for the parents of my ancestor Elizabeth BARKLEY, who married William PENNY ca 1776. Does anyone recognize this early Lancaster County family? One possible father is John BARKLEY, born in Ireland in 1720, served in the Rev. War as a Major, and died in Lancaster Co. in 1796. I have one reference, an article written by Mabel Trott FitzSimons, saying that John was m. to Agnes ___ [Margaret GREY in another record is shown as his wife]. Children listed are sons William, Robert (m. Mary PALLON in 1784),John (m. Agnes___),Hugh (m. Mary GREY). Daughters are __?__ (m. ___DAVIS) and Ann (m. James LOVE). So there is no Elizabeth listed--but maybe someone out there has a complete list of children, that might include Elizabeth? Thank you for looking. Bill Penny MN

After thinking about it for about a week I finally decided who I would like to join our family for Thanksgiving dinner. She was Temperance Massey, my great-great-great-great grandmother. She was born in 1785 not far from Old Waxhaw Presbyterian Church, the twelfth child of William Massey and Elizabeth Rives Massey;her mother died on the same day. Temperance married Reece Porter and had one child, Elizabeth Porter, who married her first cousin, Henry Massey, Jr. (this is my line on my mother's side) Reece died and Temperance then married Joseph Gillespie, had a number of Gillespie children, and lived in the Indian Land area until her death in the 1850's. She was listed as a widow in the 1850 census. She is buried at the old cemetery at Six Mile Presbyterian Church, Lancaster County. I would like to ask her what Reece died of, also about Joseph, how long she was a widow. I'd also like to ask her about her neighbor, Robert Crockett Potts, who was my ancestor on my father's side, and about other related families in the area. I'd like to know about her day-to-day life---what it was like back then. This was a great idea and I'm sure it has made a lot of people think. OK, I'm a little behind, but this could be a good one! It's really kind of hard to decide who to ask -- and actually, I'm not really sure if any of the ones I'm thinking of are Lancaster relatives. That would be one of the questions to ask! Just where exactly did you live???? But the relatives I'd most want to visit with right now would be my great-great-grandfather, James Hunter, and his first wife, Dora. They've been a totally brick wall for ages, until this past weekend when a new cousin was able to start filling in the blanks (I now know that Dora was an Evans, and suddenly have relatives coming out my ears!). But I'd still like to ask James who his father really is, and I'd like to know all about Dora's family. And I'd like to know why James shot his brother-in-law <g>. There's got to be a story there!
