Do any of you show a connection between your Catoes and the Deason family? I've got a Cader Deason, son of John Deason and Susanah Guinn, and I've always wondered if Cader was a mangling of the name Cato... So far, I've mostly found the Deasons in Union county, occasionally wandering over into Anson, but Cader Deason married a Levena Helton (or maybe Hilton) who was supposed to be from Lancaster County. By the way, if anyone wants to claim Levena Helton, I'd love to find a family to put her in <g>. She was born about 1835, and married Cader in Feb. 1854. I am researching the family of Samuel TYNES (also spelled TINES), who moved to what was then St Marks Parish in about 1774. The following year he joined, with his brother Fleming, a pro-Revolutionary "Vallanteer Company of Horse" headed by Matthew SINGLETON; but in 1780 he switched sides and fought for the British as a colonel. In his only two major engagements, his unit was badly defeated by Francis Marion and his brigade. After the war, he continued to appear in census, land and court records in Lancaster, Sumter and Kershaw Districts, until 1797. I presume that's when he died. The 1800 census shows heads of household named Mary TINES and Francis TYNES, presumably Samuel's widow and son, but that's just a guess. The TYNES surname never seems to show up again in Lancaster District. I don't know whether this is because they all moved away, or because General Sherman got to their records before I did. By 1830, there are TYNESes in Fairfield and Richland Districts; there is some evidence, not conclusive, that they may be Samuel's descendants. Other such candidates appear in Greene County, Alabama, and Tazewell County, Virginia. Families with which Samuel TYNES is associated include BROWN, FREE, JENNINGS, BRUMFIELD, JAMES, TERRY, and COLLINS. Of these, only BROWN seems to have a connection with Lancaster District; two of Samuel's possible children may have married BROWNs. -- Mark James <tmarkjames@yahoo.com> __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? From an Alabama researcher regarding our Black family: "I have speculated that Thomas M. Black and Hugh M. Black were brothers or cousins and that one or both's father was the John Black with Butler Co. land in 1837 who died or got skipped by 1840's census. I think John Black, Hugh Black, and Robert Black on the 1830 Lancaster Co. SC census were the "three brothers" I've heard about in family stories who migrated from SC to Butler Co. I'd love to prove my theory, but courthouse fires and destroyed records in Alabama and SC make that difficult! " Does anyone have info about these brothers? Here's an obit of a lady who may be a relative, but have not been able to connect her: Lancaster Ledger 17 Mar 1900 Mrs. Susanna Harris, the sprightly old lady who celebrated her 107th birthday at the cotton mill last Sunday, at the request of the editor has been counting her children, grandchildren, great grand-children and great great grandchildren to ascertain the number of descendants she has. She has counted up to 150 but thinks there are more as some few have moved away and she thinks it probably they may have families by this time. Mr. Harris is a native of this county. She was a daughter of a Mr. Snipes and was raised in the eastern section of the county near Lynches River. The remains of the old lady were taken to Spring Hill church near Tradesville for interment. Any additional information would be greatly appreciated.

I am looking for the parents of Jesse Franklin Catoe; I believe them to be Amos Cato born 1816, died 1870, and Rhoda. No documented proof of this. I did find an Amos Kato age 62 on the Goose Creek, Union County, NC census in 1889; his wife was Rhoda; children: William, Frank and Eliza. In Lancaster County 1870, census in Taxahaw area, I found Amos Catoe wife Rhoda and Jane age 26; Sarah A. Catoe age 25 and Hasseltine Catoe, make age 15, living with this family was Ann McManus age 18. Can anyone help me document this as the family of Jesse Franklin Catoe or Cato? I am looking for the wife of John Thomas Knight born 1745 in Lancaster County, SC; his son William Knight born 1765 married Elishiba. I have a list of the children of William and Elishiba but no last name for her nor much else on the two of them. Lewis Ervin Baker although born 1823 in Chesterfield County; he and his family lived in Lancaster County. On the 1880 Census he is in Cedar Creek Township of Lancaster, County, with his daughter Ida Jane and four of his sons. My grandfather James Baker was 8 year old on this census, the mother Mary Ellender Roberts of Chesterfield County was not with the family in 1880. Anyone who can connect with her family please contact me. On the 1860 Lancaster County Census they are living at the Flint Ridge Post Office of Lancaster County, SC. Lewis age 37 Ellender age 22. The 1870 census the family was in Chesterfield County; Lewis age 42 his wife was listed as Mary. From the death certificates of my granddaddy and his siblings I learned their mother was named Mary Ellender Roberts Baker. Granddaddy had a sister named Charlotte who married a man named Weaver. I would love to get in touch with someone with her line. I have almost nothing on her except that my Little Mama called her "A! unt Sis".
