Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/XeB.2ACI/1532.1 Message Board Post: These were my great grandparents; their daughter, Fannie, was my maternal grandmother. I have their bible and I have some info but will have to look it up..glad to share. I saw your other post about Sarah Janet and Joseph (Brice) Montgometry. Sarah and Fannie were sisters. I knew your g-grandmother, Grace; still have some pillow cases she crocheted on for me; she used to visit us sometimes, as did her brother, Austin. I have some old pics of Grace and Dixie, and probably some of Austin too. Am interested in any info you have that I don't. I will send you an e-mail soon.

Those Hortons were all over Lancaster Co., weren't they? I'm trying to find out anything about Elijah Horton's life there. He was born about 1798 in SC. Married.....somebody. Had a few children, only one of whom I know anything about. We assume the others died, but perhaps not. His first wife must have died because he showed up in Shelby Co., Alabama shortly before 1850 with a second wife, Fannie Reeves, his daughter, Elizabeth from his first marriage, and three children from his second marriage. (The ages are not right for Fannie to be his first wife.) Elijah was in the 1820, 30 and 40 Lancaster Co. census. In 1820 he was the only Horton on page 176. Page 175 was home to Henry, Harburd, Henry C., Isaac, Michael, Sterling, William and William R. Horton. Page 177 had Willie and Jesse. I'd like to see the census again to see who his immediate neighbors were. This was done when I first started researching back in 1986, before I realized the importance of neighbors. I've seen it questioned that his second wife, Fannie's maiden name was Reeves. Fannie and Elijah's son, William's death certificate says his parents were Elijah Horton and Fannie Reeves. That's my only "proof". The Shelby Co., AL census shows Fannie born in Tennessee one year and South Carolina others. Her sisters might have been Margaret, Millie and Emily Reeves. Emily later married a Horton. If they weren't sisters, they were very possibly kin somehow as they were long time neighbors in Shelby Co. Does anyone have a connection to Elijah or Fannie? Who were the parents of either? Siblings? Elijah's first wife and kids? Anything? There are quite a few people working on this line and as far as I know, no one has got past this point. Thanks, Wanda Horton Craft
Am researching the above listed names in Lancaster Co, and other counties, in SC. Our Jesse Mes(s)hew had a 1794 Governor's land grant in Lancaster Co (neighbors were Johnstons, etc.), married an Elizabeth Croxton, daughter of Benjamin and Mary (Minter) Croxton, and departed the area, circa 1808, for TN and far western KY, when the Jackson Purchase opened up. The Land Grant was in the name of Mesho, and was originated out of Charleston. Jesse joined Marion, the Swamp Fox, in 1780, in Georgetown, and spent several tours with the group. Was in Charleston when it fell to the British. Served until circa 1783 or 4. Have, through Liz DiGravina, most of Croxton info, but need Jesse's parents. He stated, in his Rev War Pension Application, he was born in VA, circa 1756. Would appreciate any info. Ron Meshew, Rocky Mount, NC _ronmeshew@aol.com_ (mailto:ronmeshew@aol.com)
Hi everyone, I'm related to the following families from Lancaster, SC. Francis W. Vincent (son of Mary E. Vincent ) and wife Elizabeth H. Phillips (dau. of William Travis Phillips & Sarah Stogner) Jarrett Anderson Bowers (son of Ed Bowers) and wife Jane Small All my maternal lines are from Lancaster; BOWERS, SMALL, HILL, PHILLIPS, STOGNER, VINCENT (VINSON), PATTERSON Susan Mahoney
Both sides of my father's families are from Lancaster county. My Dunlaps moved to Rock Hill around 1900. Most of my information of my families are from 1850 to 1900 in Lancaster county for all my families. My Dunlaps hit a brick wall in 1860. I can't find which family my Laurence Dunlap came from. I have the same problem with my Nancy M. Belk. I do know her parents' names were Henry Belk and Catherine Beaver. So funny that none of the historians of these family lines from this county claim either Laurence or Nancy in their lines. Two of their children's families still live in the area. One son James' grandchildren are in Monroe county, NC, just down the highway, and another son AJ's grandchildren are still in the Lancaster area. I have tons of information from James' family, but they do not go past the CW. I spoke to a couple of AJ's children before they passed on. But their memory was fading at the time. My Templetons seem to have floated into the area in the 1870s and were gone by 1900. James P. and Margaret Templeton were the head of that small family. They had a son, Davis, my grandmother's father, who died before she was born in an accident. He married Sarah Ann Louise Usher. When Davis died and my grandmother (Della) was born, the Templetons took her in to raise until she was 12. Sarah then married a Knight and got custody of Della. I have the court records on this. I have no idea how Davis died. James Templeton was deaf, and was one of the first students at the South Carolina School of the Blind. I have called the school but they do not have a historian. My cousin has one of his school books and I have found him on the census there in 1860. All of my families except the Ushers, lived around the Zion Church area. I would love to know who holds the cemetery records at Mt. Zion church. I have called them, but they said they didn't know. Nancy Belk Dunlap's grave is in the cemetery, unmarked, and I believe my grandfather and one of his brother John, are in the graveyard unmarked too. There is a marker for AJ Dunlap who is also buried there. I am concerned because if they do not have a history of the graveyard, what stops them from burying people on top of my grandparents. This church is still active. I have been to the graveyard and it is really not that big. People have been buried there in the past ten years. Gives me more gray hairs to think about this. I would be happy to compile their graveyard records, if they have any. But they didn't seem to cooperative when I last spoke to them about 8 years ago. Penny E. Tony, The Duke(s) family in Orangeburg was associated with a family variously spelled Faure (Pierre) and Fort (Thomas). They may have been the same family as Clement Faure of Christ Church Parish. I would be one of many, it appears, who would love to read your (now out-of-print) book on this subject. I have a fair number of ancestors from and around Lancaster, York, Chester and Union Counties, SC (surnames: Collins, Dye, Stone, Cathcart, Strain, Faris and Neely, among others). Could you advise at your convenience about anything at all in your book that notes the above surnames? Even if it's just a short "blurb" on anyone with the above names, it might well be a good lead to other sources. Appreciate it. If you have your files on computer, please feel free to send anything you might discover as an email attachment, to: sjcmsc@knology.net . Thank you very much for your help! Steve Cox Knoxville, TN
My FORD were in SC on the Wateree River before 1780. I don't know where they were prior to that. The ABBOTT family was on the Wateree River about 1760. There was a John Abbott further south in Georgetown, SC circa 1730 who is said to have come from one of the northern colonies, but I can't connect my Abbotts to him. I am searching for the Mackey family of Lancaster, South Carolina. I am particularly interested in Thomas Mackey, (son of Solomon Mackey) and his wife, L. Stevens Mackey( that's how she was listed in the 1850 census, according to the book "Mackey's and Allied Families"). I have hit a brick wall where they concerned. I think they moved on to Choctaw County, Miss. and then on to Texas. If so, I have a WHOLE LOTTA Mackey's (or McKey's as we spell it) to add to the Mackey family line. If anyone has info, please HELLLLLPPPPPPP!!!!!! Thanks, Mary McKey Abshire
I am a GGgrandaughter to Captain Barnett Devlin (BD)Johnson (1821/1886) and Elizabeth (Nilva) Miranda Horton (1823/1872), originally from Lancaster co, SC who moved to Elbert later Hart CO, GA. Am interested in confirming the parents and siblings of BD. Lori Johnson Williams
I think so. That makes sense for her to be named after her mother, so I guess her mother is prob. Sarah Ann i/o just Sarah. But, I'll leave it as Sarah. Do you know what happened to Harriet? I forwarded your original message to a friend who knows how to forward to a GARDNER in this area. It may take a while since she doesn't get on the computer very often. My messages don't seem to ever get through to his address. I am sorry, I meant to say Eliza could not be the mother because she was only 8 years old when Payne Lawson was born. It had to be one of the two older girls; Jane born 1844 or Sarah A. born 1845. I forgot to mention that Amos's parents were Jesse CATOE and Esther HINSON according to other dbs I've seen. My db is online in Rootsweb WorldConnect where we upload to, and therefore, Ancestry.com, who bought Rootsweb a few years ago promising to keep it free. Our db is Blackman - Farmer, which has as much info as I've been able to enter so far. I don't understand why Ann would have been too young since she was b. abt. 1845. I couldn't find any hints of those 3 given names (Harriet M., Jane, or Ann) married to a LAWSON with the approx. dates and right counties in NC or SC, so I have no idea there. Hi, looking for Jesse Harris, possible son of Joshua Harris, he moved from Montgomery co, NC, to the Indian lands of Lancaster Co, about 1791. Would appreciate any information. Thanks Lea
Elaine, do you think that this Jesse age 50 on the 1850 Chesterfield County Census is the father of Amos Cato? I have charted Amos and Sarah; Amos and Roda from 1850, 1860, 1870, 1880, and 1900. On the 1860 they were at hickory Head, Lancaster County, he was showing age 35, Sarah age 40, Jane age 16; Anny age 15 and Hugh H. age 5. (I just looked this up since your message came in about Hasseltine being Hugh.) Then on the 1900 Flat Creek Twp of Lancaster County we find Amos Catoe born Dec 1815 age 84 married 40 years Rody Catoe wife born May 1835 age 65 married 40 years she had three children with three living Payne Lawson grandson born Apr 1882 age 18 single. Which daughter does Payne belong to? Annie would be to young, that leaves Jane and Sarah.
