    1. KNOX DNA surname project
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: KNOX Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/XeB.2ACI/1542 Message Board Post: We are recruiting males with a surname of KNOX for participation in a DNA project. Y-chromosome testing is the newest research tool at the disposal of genealogists. The Y-chromosome is passed down from father to son with very little change for generations allowing a DNA “profile” to be mapped for different ancestor lines. We are pleased to announce a KNOX surname DNA project has started (in conjunction the KNOWLES surname project.) Robert Noles is the project manager for the KNOWLES project and has graciously added the KNOX surname to his project until such time as someone will volunteer to be project manager for a separate KNOX project. He will be providing the interpretation and analysis of the results to participants. The success of DNA projects depend on the comparison of test results one to another. However, the test results are entirely private and names are not revealed to potential matches without permission of both parties. Family Tree DNA out of Houston (FTDNA) is managing the DNA testing for the surname projects in conjunction with the research lab of geneticist Dr. Michael Hammer at the University of Arizona. There are over 30,000 participants so far. Please browse the website at www.familytreedna.com My dad is the first volunteer and we have ordered his test kit which requires only a gentle swab from the inside of the cheek for a sample. The 12-marker test is an effective screening test but may not be specific enough to establish proof of lineage. Most men who originally purchased the 12-marker test have upgraded their test to the 24-marker or now the 37-marker test. If the price is an obstacle, it has been suggested that families may take up a collection to pay for testing one representative of their KNOX line. Please consider joining this project (or urging someone to participate) so that all KNOX researchers may benefit. Go to the FTDNA website and type KNOWLES in the surname search box (top right). Then click on the KNOWLES project link, it will take you to the project details. Order your test kit online and return your sample. If you have questions you may contact someone at FTDNA or Robert Noles at rbnoles@bellsouth.net (KNOWLES/KNOX surname project manager)

Surnames: WRIGHT, HARRIS, Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/XeB.2ACI/1369.2.1 Message Board Post: Dear Paula, I have Wrights of Lancaster, but they are not connected to yours. They are Eli Wright, b ca 1814, md to a Rebecca, b. ca 1820 , who had a son, Melton Wright, b. ca 1835 who married Winnie Garris, b. Oct. 1840. Their children were Ann b. May, 1875, who married Sarah "Sally" Harris, William "Sam" b. 1879, who married Susie Glendora Harris, and Lula Louise b. Jan. 1883, who married Dever W. (D.W.) Furr. My connection is through the HARIS sisters who married into the Wrights. However, I have asked a friend, Charles Respass, to search for anything Tennessee connected that might help you. He has done a tremendous amount of research and worked very hard on his Wright research. Although he has not worked this line for a while, and Charles has been generous enough to respond with the following information: "Hi Carol, I reviewed what I had on this Wright family and when I looked at the migration patterns of the Wright's I followed, I did notice some of the James and Alexander Wright neighbors in Lancaster, Co., SC also went to Tipton Co., TN at about the same time in the late 1830,s. An example is James Draffin, Moore's, Harper's, Nelson's and others. I have tried to match all the Wright families to the early ones in the 1790/1830 census for years and matched the census records with the records of Brent Holcomb who is the best published researcher for SC records. attached is what I have. Richard Wright b. abt. 1870 may have married a woman named Mary b. abt 1870. Children are: 1-James Wright b. abt. 1792, Lancaster, Co., SC and d. March 20, 1874, Tipton Co., TN. 1. Mes(s)hew and Croxton
    2. My GGGF Jesse Meshew (sometimes spelled Messhew and/or Mesho) settled in Lancaster Co., SC, with a 1794 land grant from the then SC Governor. He married Elizabeth Croxton, daughter of Benjamin and Mary Minter Croxton. (All of their land ownership and sales documents are titled in the name of Mesho, and most deeds were witnessed by a John Mesho.) They left SC, circa 1807/8, and wound up in western Indiana (Henderson Co. for the 1810 census. They, reportedly, had four sons (Benjamin, William, Isaac and one other) and three daughters (Names unknown). They moved on to the Jackson Purchase area, circa 1824) Have been looking all of the children's names, and the names of Jesse's parents. Jesse was to have been an enlistee in Marion's group, and served on and off for approximately four years. Was, supposedly, living in the Upper PeeDee River country when he initially signed up with Reuben Hartsfield' unit, in Georgetown. SC, circa 1779/80. Any information would be appreciated. In addition will share any info, including a Croxton info source. Ron Meshew, Rocky Mount, NC (_ronmeshew@aol.com_ (mailto:ronmeshew@aol.com) )

    3. I am researching the Nathaniel E Baker family - I have been unable to find any firm details on Nathaniel's parents and/or siblings. Would appreciate any information anybody can provide. Much of the census information I have found has been in the Flat Creek area. I've also recently found lots of information on Caroline Garris and the Garris line. Would be happy to share my information also! Below are the details on a couple of generations but I have much more up to current date. I am descended from Nathaniel (NE) and Caroline's son - Benjamin Franklin Baker and there are many descendants from their son Thomas still living in Lancaster and the surrounding area. 1 Nathaniel E. 3. I am researching descendants of Samuel TYNES, son of William TYNES and Patience DAVIS; born in (or near) Caroline County, Virginia, in about 1750; grew up in Granville County, North Carolina; and was in old Camden District, South Carolina, by 1775. He joined a Revolutionary cavalry unit that year, but by 1780 had switched sides and was a colonel for the British. He is on the 1790 census in Lancaster District, and figures in land and court records in Lancaster and Kershaw districts until 1797, which is apparently when he died. The 1800 census shows two TYNES (TINES) families in the area: Mary, apparently Samuel's widow but too young to be the mother of his earlier children; and Francis, probably his son. Other documented or probable children are Obadiah, Henry, James, and Nancy. The last two are said to have married BROWNs, from Chester District. The census records suggest more children, but I have no information on their names. Other families that Samuel interacted with are DAVIS (his mother's surname) and COLLINS. His brothers William and Fleming lived in Sumter District. -- Mark James <tmarkjames@yahoo.com> __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! Mail Address AutoComplete - You start.
